A Best Book of the Year The Boston Globe, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and The Denver PostIn the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf’s inimitable fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of … decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis’s wife. His daughter lives hours away, her son even farther, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in empty houses, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with. But maybe that could change? As Addie and Louis come to know each other better–their pleasures and their difficulties–a beautiful story of second chances unfolds, making Our Souls at Night the perfect final installment to this beloved writer’s enduring contribution to American literature.

SUPER SWEET STORY
A beautiful book about people who need people and the love that develops between them.
I did not know if I would enjoy this book. The characters are still with me. I can easily see the whole thing unfolding , happening to anyone.I think that is what made me so sad. I can see myself giving up my happiness for a variety of reasons. The writing is very excellent. The senses were invoked. Simple every day occurrences are richly invoked. Readers should give this a chance, especially those in the autumn of their years.
a great book
A sweet touching story of day to day lives.
I loved this book. I am selecting it as my choice for our book club next month. Our book club is over forty years old, so we are of an age to appreciate the main characters, their challenges and desires. The spare prose enhances this short book, and leaves room for the reader to fill in the blanks and paint his/her own images of the people and the town. It’s amazing how it manages to evoke a variety of emotions in a very short time.
I loved the book – read it at one sitting as wanted to see how it ended. The older characters were in my age range but did not have the outcome I hoped for.
A nice summer feel good read.
Great story an amazing lesson in life about love.
Loved Kent Haruf!
I am a fan of Kent Haruf. He had a way of telling a story in a simple but beautiful way. I encouraged my book club to read it and everyone enjoyed it. We are older and the idea that romance is not dead as you age was very appealing. Haruf made his old couple dignified and intelligent. Lovely book.
This beautiful love story will touch your heart and stay with you for a very long time.
Very good. Also saw the movie.
Feel good!
I really liked this book. It is original. The author takes ordinary day and activities and makes them interesting. This is about an older man and woman who have been married before and both of their spouses have died. It is about taking a risk on a new relationship and all the everyday details that involves. Well written and very interesting. Kept me turning pages and not putting it down till I had finished the whole book.
Kent Haruf is a great writer. Nothing is ever simple in his novels. This one started me off to reading more of his writing. His books are a realistic picture of life. This particular story is sweet at times, with an unexpected ending.
Well, I have not seen the movie, but Jane Fonda and Robert Redford seem way to “big” for this simple little story about two ordinary people. It really is rather poignant in it’s simplicity. Major themes about loneliness, aging, independence, and love. The book is short and easy to read but really haunted me. I especially recommend it for those of us who are social security age!!
Excellent. Highly recommend.
