If 2018 brings a better book than Our House I will eat my hat. Addictive, twisty, and oh so terrifyingly possible.
Nail-biting from the first line to the very end, Our House plunges the reader into one family’s terrifyingly plausible nightmare, and twists the knife right up to the very final page.
Dark, timely and full of surprises, Our House is a truly captivating novel of domestic suspense….A true binge-read. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
A high-stakes domestic thriller that is utterly absorbing. Twists and turns abound, and Our House will have you locking your doors and checking your windows.
A stunning premise, intriguingly and originally revealed. Gripping stuff.
What I adore about Our House is it’s a situation we could all very easily find ourselves in. Property fraud is on the increase, and devious husbands have been around forever! This book is cleverly crafted, but it’s the incident a few chapters in that sets in motion a crazy series of events which will have you glued to the pages and asking yourself: What would I have done if this had happened to me? Bram is an astonishingly well-drawn character – the best “worst” husband in recent fiction! You know an author has nailed it when you find yourself rooting for a rather despicable character. Read this. It’s so deserving of all its outstanding reviews. You are in for a ride…
Wonderful characters. Interesting plot. Vivid descriptions. A great, captivating read!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Berkley Publishing Group in order to read and provide a voluntary and honest review, should I choose to do so.

I bought the hardback format of this book for my collection and I’m very happy I did. Nail-biting from the very beginning, this writer knows how to turn everyday situations into truly disturbing nightmares. A well-executed plot that had me gasping from the outset. I noticed a few reviews said this was a slow burn, but for me it was totally the opposite. Each chapter and sections of dialogue drove the story forward at an alarming rate. and I couldn’t put the book down.
Although the premise may seem a little far-fetched, as I read on it became terrifyingly believable. On Friday 13th, Fi returns home to discover something has happened to her house. The front façade is the same, but the occupants and furniture aren’t. Fi’s husband’s phone is out of service and her children aren’t at school that day. Two inconsistencies sure to send any mother into a tail spin. This is one of those stories that spring from an ordinary day at work, a simple ride home and BAM! The stuff great psychological thrillers are made of.
Written mainly in two points of view, Fi’s and Bram’s with his Word document that parallels Fi’s podcast — stories that lead up to the present day. With infidelity and divorce in the background, and latterly a ‘bird’s nest’ plan — keeping the children in the same home with alternating parental custody — things should have been working well. But they’re not when you consider the secret Bram is hiding. With Fi being the innocent party up until now, you watch two otherwise intelligent, responsible people slide slowly into a complete nightmare. A car crash, a few more affairs and a conspiracy that made my toes curl.
Fi’s neighbour, Merle, offers to help her throughout her ordeal, although I had a hard time understanding how Fi managed to deal with it. But desperate and out of sorts, what choice did she have? I found her thoughtful and compassionate, everything you’d expect. Bram is a little too treacherous for his own good, and perhaps a little weak. I kept wanting to shake him out of his stubbornness as he kept trying to cover up his mistakes, which deteriorated with each chapter. There was no way out for him and digging deeper into his dark world only cemented his failure. Secrets, both harrowing and tragic, a moral message and a few well planned twists along the way made the book a success for me. The last chapter was something I’d toyed with but thought wouldn’t happen. I think the author did a splendid job of tying up all loose ends, even if one question may have been left hanging. For me, this enhances the read because, let’s face it, who doesn’t love being confronted by a potentially shocking revelation.
This is the first Louise Candlish book I’ve read and definitely won’t be the last. Masterfully plotted, her writing is top-notch and sure to score with avid domestic thriller lovers. If you’re looking for a superior read, one with grit and depth, this is it. Our House will definitely be listed in my top ten reads for 2019.
4.5 stars
This was an interesting book. Lots of twists and turns and a double cross. Just when you think you have this book figured out something else will happen and leave you with your jaw hanging. I thoroughly enjoyed not knowing what was going to happen next and how it always left me guessing. I did felt it had its slow moments or some areas that were a bit drawn out. Otherwise a really great read.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Bram was barely redeemable and Fiona was not much better, but the premise was intriguing and the twists scattered through kept me reading. I agree that it dragged on a bit too long—some more aggressive editing would have allowed for better pacing. Having said that, I kept turning the pages to find out how the Lawsons would get themselves out of the bloody mess they’d found themselves in. Most importantly, the ending is perfect. Everyone gets exactly what they deserve (except the poor children).
Very addictive read, an excellent plot although at times it was hard not to get fed up with how much Fiona put up with. I wasn’t crazy about the twist at the end, although it made sense with the storyline. Enjoyed the book!
Absolutely brilliant. It has bestseller written all over it.
4.5 for me on this one. The House was a great read.
Fiona comes home and sees someone moving in ; that cant be her house but it is
Thus the story begins. It is told from Fi’s point of view using a podcast called The Victim. Bram her husband tells his story using Word Document.
Bram is not the nicest person you will ever meet . Far from it but at times you feel a bit sorry for him
Don’t want to give anything away but the ending is what will make you think and say I did not see that coming whatsoever.
Thanks very much to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read Our House
Great story line,
It was gripping and equally terrifying because it could happen!
Totally surprised by ending. Just sat there and said, “What…?”
I actually bought this as a travel read last summer from a shop in Victoria station, London. It was a total page turner. I found myself disliking most of the upper-middle class characters because they were all assholes in one way or another, but the way the twists just kept coming was masterful.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns of this story. At first it was a little hard to follow until I figured out the pattern of how the story was going back and forth between past and present but in the end it brought the whole story together.
I had no idea how it would end. Page turner is an understatement.
Try to solve it – a great display of people’s behavior.
Am I the only one who see that this book needs a sequel? O.k.
I enjoyed this book. Best believe that there are heartless people in the world. the extent these people would go to scam persons.
#victim Fi.. oh how I am sorry for her now that Bram sent that suicide note to both the Police and the Fi. If only Bram knew. Communications is key in every relationship
