A gorgeous space odyssey!
Our Dark Stars is a fully realized, captivating sci-fi adventure of astronomical proportions! It is fast paced, exciting, and beautiful! With daring characters, unique twists, and a fantastical futuristic setting, this one is sure to have you flying high!
From the moment I read the synopsis I knew I had to read this one! It was immensely satisfying! I devoured it, and the sci-fi lover in me was extremely happy!
There was beauty in the writing. The imagery used was impeccable! I fell in love with the enchantingly elegant metaphors flowing throughout the story, and the vast amount of descriptiveness.
I felt like the writers drew inspiration from Star Wars, Beauty and the Beast, and Dark Matter (television show). The plot was so fascinating and had my heart was pounding the entire time! I was taken on a ride with plenty of twists and turns! There were a couple of predictable moments, but they were well done and fit seamlessly with the enjoyable unpredictable moments!
The world building in this was outstanding! For a story that took place on a spacecraft the majority of the time, there was an immense amount of world building that felt natural and unique. I felt like I was on board the Odysseus with the crew. I could see the cities of the different planets the craft stopped on, and I felt like the world history, and all of its characters, was perfectly fleshed out.
Will really stood out to me, and has taken the place as my favorite sci-fi male character. He was so conflicted inside, and had such an interesting past. He was handsome, strong, and witty. I loved his confidence and personality!
I also really loved Talia. She was brave, strong, and determined. She was also pretty kickass toward the end of the book. She was fierce and moral, and shined like a star!
And, Will’s crew of rag tag, misfit mocks (droids) were incredibly dynamic! They had the fierce loyalty and edginess of Kaz’s group from Six of Crows. They brought humor and intrigue to the story.
This book made me feel like I was floating among the stars! My heart was racing! I smiled, I laughed, I rolled my eyes (in a good way), and had a moment of brief sadness. The writing was lyrical and beautiful and held me like a siren until the very end! I became fully invested in the characters and was taken on an exhilarating ride through space!
Thank you to the author, Audrey Grey, for sending me this free e-ARC in exchange for my honest review, and as part of the Elite ARC Team!!
Absolutely loved it and cannot wait for more from these authors! I read this book in one sitting and literally could not put it down. The action, story line, mystery, twists, characters! So much life and adventure in this one book. These two are definitely on a fast track to being added to my list of favorite authors!
I would definitely like to see more Talia
I’m not really into the sci-fi genre but I’d heard such good things about this book, and quite frankly, the cover is gorgeous and drew me in. I loved the vivid world the authors created as well as the range and uniqueness of the characters. It easily kept me engaged and the writing was well done. The action and tension constantly built throughout but it didn’t quite peak as strongly as I’d hoped. It was also a bit predictable, but this didn’t really bother me as the story and writing was strong. I’d love to see what happens next and hope for higher octane action and romance in the next book.
Talia is a Starchaser. Eldest sibling in an ailing dynasty her 18th birthday should be a time to celebrate, however, it marks her shift in adulthood and sovereign in waiting. Her first task? She must accept a betrothal to the cruel Cassius, a lesser match but from a planet rich with Ore. Up until this time Talia has had a steadfast companion to share her dream, not a human but a “mock.” a humanoid droid named Ailat. When Cassius forces her to chose between saving her family and saving her best friend, Talia makes the only choice she believes she can. Her choice is far reaching and through a series of events Talia finds herself in an escape pod, floating into space.
100 years later, Will Perrault and his rag tag crew of misfits are on the hunt for salvage and after discovering Talia’s pod they suddenly discover that they are targets with some very high profile hunters on their tail. A lot has changed since that fateful night for Talia and the tables have turned completely as mock became master and human became slave. As Talia awakes she cannot even begin to comprehend what has happened. As the truth of both the length of time Talia has been in stasis and the uprising of the mocks unfolds before her, Talia must fight to put right the wrongs of that terrible night.
Our Dark Stars is a gorgeous read, from the beautiful cover design to the words themselves. Talia is a wonderful character, full of both strength and vulnerability, she is able to hold her own and put aside her fears and grief to put right her wrongs. The chapters covering the fateful night 100 years prior are full of real heart pounding and also heartbreaking moments as Talia must choose between loyalty to her family and loyalty to her friend. Will’s crew are a great bunch of characters, if you were a fan of the show Firefly you will find a lot to love with them as they bring humour to the darker sides of this story
Whilst I saw the reveal coming a mile off, it didn’t spoil the enjoyment of the moment, which was terrifying in the face of how Talia came to be in that position. Our Dark Stars has some truly epic moments from space battles to strip clubs, but it is also a story about friendship, betrayal and redemption and how hope can be found in the most unlikely of places.
I really loved this book, I read it in 2 sittings and struggled to put it down. It’s such an easy read, page after page just flow together – i’m glad the story was rounded off well but i’m also intrigued that there could be more of these characters story to come.
5*
If only Goodreads and Amazon had options for half stars… I would give this 3.5 stars. The plot was a little bit predictable and the main characters were likable, and I liked the dual point of view. The cover is stunning! It was a fun read. The world building was really good, but it was a slow start which is what stops this from being a 4 star.
A last remaining human princess in cryopod wakes up tbo a world under control of machines. A sci-fi story full of adventure and dash of romance. Will she find her place in this new world? It is worth reading this action packed story to find out.
From the very first page of this story, this incredible epic adventure, it is spellbinding. Such an intriguing cast of characters, one could never find a moment where there isn’t something going on with them. It was so much fun that I was sad when it was over. It brought me back to a type of read that reminded me of the lunar chronicles mixed with Our broken stars, all compiled into one book.
Incredible storytelling, fun multi-dimensional personalities and a literary ride that you won’t soon forget.
Highly recommend this book and I look forward to Audrey Cunnyngham’s next work of word weaving. Great job!!
The Lunar Chronicles meets Firefly! This book was seriously amazing! The characters were vividly written and the action never stopped!
