Shapeshifting can be a beautiful and deadly secret.Gwen craves the forbidden rush of leaping from her bedroom window and transforming into an owl, but she could lose it all if anyone caught her. Most Americans don’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for Others. In the small town of Klikamuks, Washington, coming out as a person with paranormal abilities means staring down the barrel of a shotgun. … barrel of a shotgun. Gwen hasn’t even told the truth to her boyfriend, Zack, who she hopes will be the boy to take her virginity.
When a pack of werewolves claims the national forest behind Gwen’s house as their territory, the tensions in Klikamuks escalate—into murder. Prejudice slows the police investigation. It doesn’t take Gwen long to realize a serial killer is targeting Others. On the hunt for clues, she meets Tavian, a sexy Japanese fox-spirit who rivals Zack and challenges her to embrace her shapeshifting. Can she find the killer before he finds her, or will her secrets be the death of her?
“This who-done-it is an unusual blend of mystery and fantasy, starring original characters not often featured in modern urban fantasy for teens. I really enjoyed it.” – Annette Curtis Klause, author of Blood and Chocolate
“Other has it all: love, shifters, pookas, and nail-biting action. What’s even better, Kincy’s characters are vibrant, real and lovable. This is a debut that leaves you aching for more.” – Carrie Jones, New York Times bestselling author of Need and Captivate

I liked it, you should read it, as well.
There is a lot of action in this book. I enjoyed the story line and the way author told the story. (It’s definitely disturbing that the cast of characters are all minors & run aways, but it’s also a true fact that our nation is facing.) The story telling is point on, I feel use of the use of Celtic myths, ledgens, & lore were were well woven in as well.

This book was amazing. It kept me wanting more it was hard to put down. Can’t wait to read book #2
I unfortunately didn’t love the book. It was quick to ready, easy to get through. Fairly repetitive in its chapters, and difficult to relate to such young characters.
Karen Kincy’s Other (An Other Novel, Book 1) is a neat book. It’s lead, Gwen, is well-developed and you get a realistic sense of what it’s like growing up to be growing up in a town where coming out as an Other (a person with paranormal abilities) “means staring down the barrel of a shotgun.” A well done plot and equally strong cast of characters made this a worthwhile read and, frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on with praises. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is definitely one to read, and it is easy to recommend. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
A lot happening in the life of teen. Trying to figure out what and or when to do things. To have sex or tell about beaning Other. So much to thing about and try to put them in perspective. Then killings start to happen and is it related to Others or is it a series killer. So much. Very good story and well written. Maybe Gwen will come out of this stronger. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
This book is a very good and I am looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this series.
Has romance, suspense and action.
hard to finish
Cute Teen Lit style book. It was a decent page turner, but not good enough that I wanted to go further in the series.
This book was okay but not good enough to want to read a sequel. Almost hard to accept attraction between main character and her new love
I did not find this book enjoyable
A twist on boy meets girl…..he’s anti paranormal and she is a shifter….Romeo and Juliet 2.0
Good read! Kept me guessing almost to the end!
An allegory for every other Lind of other, a bit too much predictable gender role romance but a fun read nonetheless.
Great read!
A good easy read with interesting characters.
Was ready for more when it ended.
This book was okay but there were enough things with the plot that bothered me that I won’t be reading the other books in the series. This is a paranormal story with a mystery. The author should have stuck to the paranormal part of the story. I had the mystery figured out at the beginning of the book.
Minor spoiler alert: there is a scene where a dog gets into a fight with a werewolf. I almost stopped reading as I thought the dog was going to be killed. I continued and the dog did survive.
Major spoiler alert: There were a lot of plot elements that were just stupid. 1) the main character’s boyfriend is from an ultra religious conservative family that finds ‘Others’ (paranormals) anathema, thinking they are all soulless and evil. Why would she ever have started a relationship with someone with that background? Clearly there was going to be a problem when the truth came out. 2) The BF is supposedly super religious but can’t wait to get Gwen into bed, despite knowing she is a virgin. 3) The BF admits his family has a history of belonging to an ultraconservative organization built around a hatred of others who are known for burning crosses and burning Others, yet he tells them Gwen is an Other. 4) A six year old child is able to leave notes for Gwen at her home yet to get to the river the child lives near you have to take a bus and then walk to the other side of town. There were many more issues like this.
It was an OK book but I’m not willing to deal with similar plot issues in the other books in the series. Maybe if they were free.
i enjoyed the twists in the book and the way it did not depend upon the romance scenes to fill up space. The book was good and original in its themes.
