They have come for our most important resource…
THE year is 2061, and the planet is dying. Cataclysmic solar storms force leaders from around the world to finally put aside their differences and agree on one thing — to jump ship. The human race is headed to Mars.
When Dr. Sophie Winston is hired by New Tech Corporation to test a Biosphere deep within the heart of Cheyenne Mountain, she … heart of Cheyenne Mountain, she believes it’s part of the mission to save the world. Their results will help prepare NTC for the three-year flight to the red planet. A flight Dr. Winston has been promised a seat on.
Just days into their six-month assignment, things start to go wrong. When the blast doors hiss open, Winton’s team finds a vastly changed world outside. Humans are gone, vanished without a trace, but they aren’t the only thing missing. The planet’s water appears gone, too.
As the team journeys deeper into Colorado Springs, they find thousands of luminous blue orbs lining the streets. It isn’t until they accidentally uncover what’s inside that they realize the nightmare that has been unleashed.

It’s 2061 and the world isn’t what it used to be since the Solar Storms. Leaders of the world have agreed that there is only one option, and that’s to try to inhabit Mars. Dr. Sophie Winston has dreamed of the day that she would do something like this. She is willing to do anything to realise that dream and has agreed to test a biosphere deep …
Brilliant imagery! I stumbled upon Nicholas Smith’s Orbs series while searching for the caliber of storytelling that keeps you glued to the pages. Fortunately for readers, he’s a prolific writer. Orbs is a plot driven, alien invasion thriller with layers of conflict and tension that does not let up. I highly recommend this fast-paced ride through …
Dr. Sophie Winston had been training for the Mars mission all her life, it seemed. Now finally the preparation was nearly complete. As Team Leader for the first Mars colonists she would lead her crew into the Biosphere in Cheyenne Mountain They would be learning how to survive in the enclosed environment simulating the journey to Mars on board the …
Great story line! Cannot wait to start the next in the series!
This was an interesting and exciting book. The end of the book dragged a little compared to the beginning but still and excellent read.
This was a great read . Couldn’t put it down beginning to end.
I gave this 4.5 stars because I really, really liked it. The fact that I liked it was partly from the fact that I had read the prequel Solar Storms, which is what led me to this one to continue the story. I like science fiction to start with and good science fiction is not always easy to find, but this is a good tight story about an event that has …
Nick Sansbury Smith has proven once again, he’s an uncompromising talented author. Totally recommend Orbs and can’t wait for the next one.
Weak story. Weak execution. Throwaway wooden characters. Things just happen and there’s no reason as to why. Aliens invade and I still don’t know why.
It just dragged on; characters disappeared then reappeared a book later and it was never resolved.
Was ok. I have to finish the other 2 books in series, but this was fairly predictable.
so far I have enjoyed this series very much. I am on book 2 now. One reason I like it is taking place in my home town of Colorado Springs. Doh! Great action good story well written. I highly recommend it.
I stumbled upon the Orbs series while searching for the caliber of storytelling that keeps you glued to the pages. Orbs is a plot driven, alien invasion thriller with layers of conflict and tension that does not let up. I highly recommend this fast-paced ride through a post-apocalyptic world.
Tired of zombie apocalypse literature? Try Smith’s reskinning of horror tropes with a decidedly alien twist. A lovely novel which should garner it’s greatest applause for rooting itself in actual science.
New take on an old idea. great read.
This is a good concept and maybe it is just me but I had hard time getting behind the characters
I gave this 4.5 stars because I really, really liked it. The fact that I liked it was partly from the fact that I had read the prequel Solar Storms, which is what lead me to this one to continue the story. I like science fiction to start with and good science fiction is not always easy to find, but this is a good tight story about an event that has the potential to occur, maybe minus the aliens. The characters were believable enough to make me to feel for everything that happened to them, even the ones who annoyed me had my full attention. They are well fleshed out with personalities you can identify with. The language used was not overly technical, considering these are scientists, but perfect to convey the action as well as the emotions being felt by all. This is a smooth tale with a great balance and a good story to tell.
It is 2061, six years after the earth was scorched by the solar storms and the planet is dying. Dr. Sophie Winston and Dr. Emanuel Rodriguez were present the day the solar storms hit and are trying to help in efforts to save as many as possible. They have been contacted by Dr. Hoffman to live and work with their team in a bio-dome under Cheyenne Mountain in the hopes that they will be allowed to go to Mars as part of a colonization effort. They are all committed to making it work but things go bad very quickly and without any fanfare. They have not been told everything about the storms and are shocked to learn the truth behind what caused them.
I did like the fact that there is a lot going on and the true nature of the threat is not revealed right away so that you know there has to be more to come. The tension feels real each time they venture outside the safe zones. The monsters are scary because they are familiar shapes that scare us naturally. I have to recommend this book to anyone who likes a story about the destruction of the planet and the people who fight to keep what is theirs.
