In this Regency Christmas romance by USA TODAY bestselling and HOLT Medallion winning author Bree Wolf, a cold-hearted lord and self-sufficient woman find themselves tied to one another against their will…but not their hearts.England 1808: As far as society is concerned, RICHARD DAVENPORT, VISCOUNT ASHWOOD, doesn’t have a caring bone in his body. His heart is made of ice, and a single look out of … and a single look out of his piercing gray eyes sends people fleeing his presence.
Richard couldn’t care less about the way others look at him. He’s never been able to read between the lines, understand subtle facial expressions or interpret the many meanings of a smile. But does that mean he doesn’t care?
However, his own issues retreat into the background when his unmarried sister reveals to him that she is with child. Determined to maintain her secret, Richard keeps her locked away from prying eyes. Still, in order to ensure her well-being, he is forced to call upon the one woman who has always been able to melt the ice from his heart.
Wishing to follow in her father’s footsteps, EVELYN PROCTEN has always tended to those in need. Despite social convention, the only future she can see for herself is that of a doctor.
However, when Evelyn is called to Farnworth Manor to tend to Miss Davenport and her unborn child, she once again crosses paths with the young woman’s elder brother. A man who disapproves of her professional ambition. A man who has never looked at her twice. A man she’s loved from afar for many years.
And then a kiss changes everything, sending sparks flying despite the snow surrounding Farnworth Manor. Heat lingers whenever they lie eyes upon one another, and slowly Evelyn comes to see that a tender heart beats in Richard’s chest, well-hidden behind his ice-cold facade.

Born before her time in an era where women were not allowed to have a career and had to be satisfied with marriage and homemaking being their ultimate goal, Evelyn finds herself at odds with not only Viscount Ashwood, but the people of the village as well. In spite of his strong views on the subject, Richard Davenport cannot help but be attracted to Evelyn, even though she is way below his station in life, added to which her unorthodox views on doctoring break all his hard-held rules. The Viscount, on the other hand, has his own difficulties and keeping people from discovering his secret, he holds himself to a rigid set of rules. Little was known both then and now about the Viscount’s condition and sadly people are no less judgmental when it comes to dealing with victims of disabilities. Slowly but surely Evelyn breaks down Richard barriers and she discovers that under the stern exterior there is a man who feels and cares deeply. This book has to be one of my favourites written by this author. It is well written with a tender and clean romance that develops into full-blown love between Richard and Evelyn, taking the reader along with them as they explore each other’s worlds. Although this book is part of a series and some of the characters from previous novels appear in this one too, it is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion, with a hint of the next episode in this series. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Bree Wolf continues to amaze me with each book she writes. Oppressed & Empowered is a wonderful romance about two characters who are faced with obstacles and prejudices to overcome before they find their happily ever after. There is some drama and suspense involving a very unlikable character. I became so emotionally involved in the story I couldn’t stop reading until the book was finished. A very fine read. I was fortunate to receive an ARC from the author and offer this voluntary review. I have also purchased the book.
An interesting romance with a touch of suspense.
A doctor in all but name Evelyn fights to be accepted whilst Richard’s inability to understand the emotions and motivations of those around him, leads to him being an aloof and lonely man. Can Richard give Evelyn the acceptance she needs and can he trust her enough to open himself up to love and happiness?
Evelyn helped her doctor father care for the sick and can not see herself doing anything but being a doctor even though society frown on it. Richard is a duje known for acold heart, lack of a sense of humor and rigidity. He needs her help wgen he finds his siste is carrying a child. His plan is to send her and her mother away so she can have the child, give it up and return with society none the wiser.
Through a series of conflicts Evelyn discovers Richard is not cold or heartless but does not see the world the sameas others do. He does not recognize cues and lacks the subtlety to on truth from sarcasm. She proceeds to help him face this and assists him to acquire skills thatshow his better nature.
Aflawed hero finds a new life. A sad single mother finds her love and keeps her child.
A doctor finds a husband who can letter her be her own vision.
Good into into how our ablity to be perveived and to perceive shape our lives. I am glad I read this book.
Am almost finished reading this. Very enjoyable.
The author shows us a glimpse into someone else’s personality/feelings/differencs. Wolf also teaches readers patience/understanding thru the use of the lady character.
A lovely romance but in addition the author has researched and included autism. A lovely book and I am also impressed with the feeling you really get something extra with it in understanding.
Can’t wait to read more of the series.
A fun book to read. A woman healer in times where it is not accepted, but desperation leads a Duke to rely on her. Good Read.
Holy Smokes!! What an awesome historical romance. Oppressed and Empowered is a book that you’ll have trouble putting down once you start it. This well-written book will have you cheering in spots and tearing up in others. The characters are spectacular and a perfect fit for this book. Richard’s sister has managed to get pregnant and doesn’t remember it. Richard is struggling to do the right thing for her. He has trouble reading people’s feelings so it’s not an easy task. Evelyn has trained with her father her whole life to become a doctor. Because she’s a woman it’s hard to be accepted as a doctor though. Evelyn and Richard’s story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Bree Wolf. Oppressed and Empowered is book 5 of the Love’s Second Chance: Damsels and Knights Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
This is in part about a young lady who finds herself unmarried and pregnant. And all the conundrums that follow. Another issue is addressed in these pages and that is the belief during this time period that women were only to look pretty and follow certain rules in society, not least of which is that she would not have the smarts to become a doctor. Evelyn was a doctor’s daughter and trained by him almost all her life. She more than once proved herself during the days before and after her and Richard’s betrothal and marriage during the Christmas holiday when family and friends were gathered in their home. Another issue addressed in this tale is the difficulty with which a life as a bastered is treated with great disdain. The merits of an individual and their worth is not even considered. All these issues are woven in between the romance which develops between Evelyn and Richard. A romance not without its challenges but we see these two work through their differences with honest communication. It was a pleasure to see how they accomplished this with its resultant success. Even in this day and age couples cannot accomplish this. One would do well to read this book and discover how it is done. I highly recommend this read.
ENDS IN CLIFFHANGER FOR H’S SISTER
You do not need to read these in order to understand them. There is little on romance and we have only kisses.
I did like most of the story line. Some suspense in the ending as to who the villain is. It didn’t help that one of the suspects was called by two different names – very confusing.
Little on action until the ending. No cliffhanger for our H/h, but a big one for the H’s sister. No cheating, HEA, epilogue a few months in the future. (ljb)
Rarely does an author capture the essence of the characters but, this author stands alone. She delves so deep and thoroughly into the heart, mind and soul of relationships and family it’s absorbing and unforgettable. Love the characters and their situations. The story has suspense and tension with surprising twists and turns which hold your attention. Enthralling to the final page…
The author knows how to hold our attention, and will keep you coming back for more books.
A lady doctor
Evelyn wishes to follow in her father’s footsteps as a doctor. On a visit with her father to Farnworth Manor, Evelyn confronts the man who holds her heart, but never notices her. Richard Davenport, Viscount Ashwood sees everything in black and white. If the order of things isn’t followed, he becomes very cold, but the more Evelyn is around Richard, the more she starts to see the man behind the mask.
A complex love story written to make Richard’s thoughts and feelings understandable. Very gently done.
This book brings you to tears of sadness and happiness! It touches upon the harsh realities of childbirth and raising children and balancing family at the same time. It’s definitely a must read page turner
This is a fairly well written regency romance that sensitively describes an interesting psychological phenomena (inability to recognize emotional expressions) not normally addressed in this genre. The main characters are well developed and very appealing. It is the first of a series of books that carries the narrative forward over different characters and romantic adventures. Definitely worth your reading time.
