A gripping family story of tragic loss, forgiveness, secrets and resilience set in rural Texas, from the author of Birdie and Jude and The Ember Months. Opal’s Story is delivered in delicious bites with rich characters. A murder/suicide in 1948 rocks a small west Texas town and leaves a young widow with a new baby questioning her judgement. Opal Evans revisits that past as she faces a terminal … past as she faces a terminal illness destined to end her life before she has forgiven herself for her role in changing the lives of her family.
In a love story of acceptance and family bonds, an unlikely hero emerges to reveal to Opal it is never too late to discover and forgive. Opal’s brothers, Harold Joe and Jimmy Dale are just as vibrant in their appeal. Their easy presence is a testament to their concern for their sister and the love of a family bound by an unthinkable tragedy.

Held my interest. Good story of family love
Really good read!
She is dying and remembers those who hurt her.
Well written and engaging
Loved it
It was a little slow to start, and somewhat predictable, but a sensitive treatment of a, unfortunately still, controversial issue.
This book is mystery, romance and family drama all rolled into one plot. The writing was intriguing.
It was just ok….not great
I enjoyed this book about family. Kept me interested until the last page.
I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint was that it ended too soon. I would have liked to visit with Opal and her family a bit longer.
A nice, pleasant read about good people and how they handle a bad minister in their lives.
Enjoyed reading this book. A lot of family support for Opal.
I loved it!
It seemed too depressing for me to get past the first 2 chapters.
Opal is about to die, you learn that in the first chapter. You soon learn about the tragedy’s in her life. The story is how will she spend her remaining time, time with her loved ones. A little forced but not a bad story.
A somewhat sad tale that nevertheless keeps the reader intriqued. The wait for answers is filled with warm characters entering each other’s lives.
I liked the writing. Found the ending to be abrupt.
Heart-wrenching story about resiliency of the human spirit. Great development of Opal’s character.
While it started slowly and I had to read a third to a half of it before it really started to make sense, the last half was interesting and kept my attention.
