This is the second book in the FBI and CDC Thriller series, but it can be read as a standalone.

This was a well-written and entertaining book. A mysterious illness has struck a group of soccer players after a trip to Brazil. Is the disease attacking their nervous systems a result of this trip? Or, there something more sinister at work. Considering that these young people attend an exclusive school and happen to be the sons and daughters of Senators, businessmen and the POTUS, it could even be terrorists!
The CDC and FBI are called upon to solve the mystery, find a cure and discover who is behind this heinous illness before one or more of these kids succumbs. If this is a terrorist attack, it could mean the end of the President’s term in office or worse. Add in the possibility that a drug cartel might be involved and a person close to the President being addicted to oxycodone and you have a true thriller.
The story moved at a fast pace and was engaging from start to finish. The author does a good job with keeping the reader’s interest with all of the twists and turns. There is also plenty of action and a little romance to add to the mix. The narrator does a good job with the pacing and the voices she uses for the various characters.
I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
This review is for the audio book.
Oh wow, I haven’t discovered another author that can write like Jenifer Ruff can. This book gripped you from the very first word and boy did it take you on a ride until the very end. As you can tell I really enjoyed this book. It contained a strong cast of characters and a good plot that had you sat on the edge of your seat, wondering what the out come would be. With everything going on in the world at the moment this book covered the subject of a pandemic very well and it also contained some lighter moments that will make you smile without lossing the seriousness of the subject. This is book two and even though it is a stand alone book I would recommend book one “Only wrong once” because it introduces you to the two main characters and let’s face it if you don’t you are missing out on what is turning out to be an excellent series.that you won’t want to miss.
Madeline plans to go house hunting are put on hold when she gets a phone call asking her to drop everything and be at the airport asap. With very little information she turns up to find the Presidents son and a number of his friends have gone down with an illness that the doctors can’t identify and she has been made head of the task force that have the job of finding a cure. Her first job, after requesting her team is to find out how they became infected and why some are worse than others. The teens have just can back from a school trip to Mexico but was the infection closer to home? Then she gets a phone call asking her to choose from three words, this leads to two dead bodies and one still alive. It seems somebody has his hands on a cure and the infection was a planned attack. Madeline is joined by Quinn Traynor as the investigation shifts gears and with the caller playing games with the teenagers lives it is a race again time to find a cure. The United states don’t negotiate with terrorist but what does that mean for a group of sick children and will the terrorists take it any further?
I liked the narrator and thought she did a good job of building up the tension and suspense, as well as some great voices for the characters.
This is a fast paced medical thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from page one! The storyline is outstanding and very entertaining. The characters are well developed. I always enjoyed reading Jenifer Ruff’s writing. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review
Terrorism, drug cartels, politics, and a dash of romance!
I somehow missed the first book in this series (Only Wrong Once) and while I am sure it would have provided more of a foundation for the main characters and their relationship to each other, I never felt I was missing anything integral to this story. It can absolutely be read as a standalone (having said that, I have already gone back and purchased the first one because the writing and the characters are so good).
This book has something for everyone. It is a well-written and compelling page-turner of a novel that features strong, intelligent female characters who are highly accomplished and very relatable. Also featured are some very convincing and rather loathsome villains, each with their own agendas, who are working together to perpetrate a heinous act of terrorism against the United States. The story is told from the perspective of a CDC epidemiologist, Madeline Hamilton and an FBI counterterrorism agent (and Madeline’s love interest), Quinn Traynor. Both have been called in to combat different aspects of this threat against their country. A neurotoxin has been deployed against a select group of young people (all of whom have wealthy and/or politically prominent parents) and a nerve-racking, tension-filled race is on to find out who is responsible for this toxin and how to combat its effects before the young lives are lost. The plot is intriguing and plausible, the characters are well-developed and believable, and the suspense is unremitting. There is no gratuitous or graphic violence, no unsavory language, and the romance between Madeline and Quinn is devoid of explicit scenes. I applaud the professional presentation of this book – it is well-edited with no typos or grammatical errors to detract from the flow of the narrative. I chose to listen to the audiobook version as I read along with the e-book version and I must comment on the superlative job done by the narrator, Stephanie Dillard. I felt she employed every technique possible (variances in pitch, cadence, tone, and accents) to bring this story and its characters to life for the listener. Without reservation, I recommend this book and audiobook to all.
While I did purchase a copy of this book, I was provided with a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this honest and unbiased review.
Capturing medical thriller, strong female lead, great read!
I would rather have given this book a 3.5. There were too many convenient coincidences for me.
FBI antiterror specialist Quinn Traynor and CDC epidemiologist Madeline Hamilton find themselves trying to solve a deadly plot. Madeline is trying to determine the cause of a potentially fatal disease, which has infected several teens, including the president’s son. Terrorists claim they have the cure, and it’s up to Quinn to track them down.
This is a riveting plot with plenty of twists and turns. You’ll find yourself rooting for Madeline and Quinn, while at the same time, you’ll be hoping the terrorists are captured or killed. Will Madeline and Quinn be successful or will the president’s son die?
A riveting tale which will have you staying up late and turning the pages to find out what happens next. This is the first book of Jennifer’s I’ve read, and it won’t be the last!
Your top priority is the safety of everyone in the United States of America. When a seemingly unknown sickness hits, how do you handle it? A president and her crack team of experts tackle this problem in Jenifer Ruff’s exciting thriller “Only One Cure”.
Anger has a way of penetrating ones soul. A criminal’s soul has deep dark ideas when they get angered. Is this what happened to an entire schools soccer team? One mad person’s idea of revenge? Or is there a new strain of neurological virus haunting the shores of America? Ruff’s main characters must divine out the answers before lives are lost. Their own lives face dangers they did not imagine as this harrowing tale unfolds.
Ruff has done a masterful job using details in her story telling. Each twist and turn is accompanied by insight born through well done research before the words were put to page! I was mesmerized by the events as they were placed before me with each turn of a page!
All lovers of exciting thriller novels will be amiss if they do not scoop up a copy of the book!
Good beginning plot twist given away early on. By the book end it felt like both reader and author were just glad it was over.
Really liked the premise. Great characters and fantastic story line.
I am 90% through and it is good. It is quite relevant considering the Covid virus but on a much smaller scale. Elite rich kids on a soccer team from a private school go to Brazil and come back Ill. The story twists with a secretary of health who is a drug addict and throw in in a con man, some drug lords and an FBI agent and you have a good story.
Read both books liked the characters info was good.
Full of action very well written kept me interested
Difficult to put down in view of headlines today. Did not get much sleep or much work around the house done while reading it.
Enjoyed! Occasionally wondered if there was a prequel to this, as it mentioned past occurrences of the main couple, but if so, you didn’t need to read it to enjoy this book.
Jennifer Ruff knows how to pull you and not let go! Only One Cure, a suspenseful medical thriller is a definite must read.
The president’s son is gravely sick with an unknown illness as well as other members of his soccer team. Is it just a virus or is there something more going on?
Enter Dr. Madeline Hamilton and Quinn Traynor. Madelin, a CDC epidemiologist is about to face the most challenging medical mystery of her career. Quinn, FBI antiterrorist specialist is brought in to run aparallel investigation. As the teen’s conditions deteriorate and begin dying, Quinn and Madeline fight to solve the mysterious illness before the President gives in and resigns to save lives.
If you like nail biters, pick yourself up a copy of Only One Cure by Jenifer Ruff. I am hooked on medicine and should have gone into that profession, I love to read a good medical story.
I’m not into FBI and espionage but, all of that fit in well with this book and I really didn’t mind it that much. This story kept me flipping the pages, sitting of the edge of my seat and for some reason not able to sleep last night. My furbaby wasn’t too happy when I got back up to read! I finally had to put it down and give into his attempts to get me back to bed.
I love Jenifer’s development of her characters. The main characters were likeable and I was rooting for them to find the cure. The secondary characters were not as developed but, that did not detract from the story. I was better able to concentrate on what was important and what was really happening. There was not a lot of miscellaneous details in the book. She was right to the point and let you enjoy the story without taking you away for non-essential details. By the way, I still was not able to guess the ending. She did a great job of keeping me stumped
I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest review.
This author has gotten my attention with her novels that can take you hostage until you are finished with the last page. This one is no different with it being with alot more suspense and drama that often had my heart racing. This release also fits right in with the pandemic around us which caused even more anticipation through this one. We are first given Madeline than Quinn whom we ride with in this one that you could say at times is almost like reading a horror with the terror you can feel. I say that also as a parent and my point of view with how I would feel. So the reason I say you are held hostage you can not quit on this one until you have all the answers regardless where they land.
This book had my attention from page one. It is a captivating thriller full of full of twists and turns keeping you turning the pages and not wanting to put the book down. What a thrill ride. I cannot wait to read the next book.
The details in this book make you feel like this could really happen and the scariness of it all. It was so captivating you won’t wanna put it down. The suspense, excitement, chills and thrills !! HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING !!
I received this as an ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
