REVIEW: 4.5 STARS
“I don’t want to kiss someone to feel. I’d rather kiss someone because I’m feeling.”
Well, I can honestly say that I will add Katie McGarry to the list of YA authors I will happily read more of. For my first ever book by her, I got caught up in this little world of two teenagers working through their own pain while helping the other deal with theirs – in a very age-appropriate way. I loved it! This book, while it may have started out a little slow for me – that was quickly sorted out and it ended up completely capturing me and continued until the very end. Her words carried me away; the lilt that she had – her voice was beauty in wonderment. Spinning in fields? Holding hands but not understanding the zing being felt? I love when the words can take on a mind of their own and bring to life a young love that is growing right before my very eyes.
I feel like this story took on a whole new possibility, or realm, for me to discover, and in doing so, it gave me a lot to think about – in a very charismatic way. Touching on some “mystical” aspects, I readily admit this book tested my side-eye abilities quite a bit, but I ended up enjoying it immensely. The whole book was understandable, but I can appreciate that McGarry made it relatable for this genre and storyline. There was a certain magic in her words that brought the story alive.
But, gosh – the exploration alone, that got me real good. When the characters are following a natural thought process, and their feelings are coming out – I feel like it’s more endearing because it’s not all drama and craziness. There was a certain truth and reality in regards to their feelings, even though they were not fully understanding what was going on, only knowing the need to explore it more in depth. This story was one in which I got to fondly remember a first love, secretly meeting up, falling in love, and fighting for that love I just couldn’t live without. That’s what a good YA book does for me – it reminds me of all those feelings and emotions, and when I can ‘escape’ back into them, that’s a win for me.
“Are we meant to be friends or are we one, big tragic mistake?”
I love that McGarry was able to bring to light an angering situation, with a young lesson on realizing that nothing is black and white and everything is subjective, as well as manipulatable. It was a scary reality to watch Jesse and Scarlett discover all that their world held for them and how they needed to survive it. Their journey was fantastical and magnificent, and I enjoyed the ride.
I will be honest and admit that I hemmed and hawed about reading this book knowing it was YA, knowing that the genre can teeter totter either way for me. I don’t really sit in the middle on these kinds of books either – I either love them or am completely frustrated by them and end up DNF’ing them. I really liked McGarry’s voice and will definitely keep her on my YA reading list. I don’t recommend YA often enough because it’s hard to find a voice and a storyteller that can do that genre justice. McGarry has been added to my very short list and I am very excited to read more by her.

This is a wonderful story about friendship, love, and family ties.
McGarry did a fantastic job of weaving new age elements into this story. I loved that it wasn’t just a run-of-the-mill young adult story. The addition of a psychic made this book even more enjoyable to read. It added some fun to the story line and kept me as the reader guessing whether we’d find out if Aunt Glory’s abilities were in fact true or all just a farce.
This story is almost a combination of second-chance romance and friends-to-lovers. Scarlett and Jesse have a history, one that didn’t end very well. Even though they were good friends, Jesse took what he had with Scarlett for granted and she hasn’t forgotten that. These characters are deep and each comes with a backstory that accounts for why they’ve turned out the way they are. The struggles that each one faces were very real to me, which only made the characters easier to identify with.
It was nice to see how each of the characters have changed since they were younger. Even though Jesse didn’t handle things well with Scarlett, he’s grown and he’s a guy who has good intentions buried down inside. This shows through in the way he is to Scarlett and how their relationship evolves over the course of the book.
I liked that McGarry explored family relationships in this story as well. It’s a romance novel first and foremost, but the inner workings of Scarlett’s family play a big role in everything. She doesn’t have a good relationship with her father and he’s an abusive man. McGarry didn’t sugarcoat this, nor did she over dramatize this. I think that she did a good job of depicting both the abuse cycle and the struggles a victim faces in a realistic manner.
Katie McGarry always does a great job of getting me to connect and fall in love with her characters. She’s also amazing at crafting YA stories! If you’re looking for a good book to cozy up with, Only a Breath Apart is a wonderful option!
Four stars to this novel!
Freaking phenomenal. As with each book I read by Katie McGarry, Only a Breath Apart was utterly engrossing and wrung me through the emotional wringer. It wasn’t an easy read, it wasn’t particularly fun, it was painful, a little dark, and made me stretch my disbelief, but it was so incredibly rich and intriguing I was beyond consumed by every word, every twist, everything that made up Scarlett and Jesse’s story.
I was 100% not prepared for Scarlett’s story, or Jesse’s if I’m sincere. Her home life was hinted at in the blurb, but I could have never guessed exactly how bad her circumstances would actually be. Jesse’s life was a complete surprise to me. The darkness they’d lived through and were living in could have easily twisted them into awful people, but they both managed to rise beyond their situations and become stronger, better people than those who bore them. They broke my heart, both in the way they took the mantels of guilt and pain that had been thrust upon them and in the way they helped one another begin to shed those burdens and heal from the wounds left behind. Healing was an essential theme in Only a Breath Apart, and I loved that both Scarlett and Jesse found the strength to do what was necessary – even when it seemed impossibly difficult – to become whole again.
I found the secondary characters in Only a Breath Apart to be just as captivating as Scarlett and Jesse. This book wouldn’t have been as rich as it was without them. I loved how Ms. McGarry used them to push Scarlett and Jesse forward, to help them learn about themselves, to show them what life outside the constraints they’d put on it could be. I would love to live in this fascinating world of broken families, supernatural themes, and secrets forever – just to squeeze out each drop of mystery hidden behind the faces we met in Scarlett and Jesse’s story.
Late last year I had the opportunity to read a few books that relied heavily on the tarot, palm readings, and other psychic type themes, and became fascinated with it. Only a Breath Apart took all of those threads of interest I had developed, fanned those flames, and made me want to believe that there is something to the spiritual world beyond the things most people are taught within the walls of a church. I loved how Katie adapted those beliefs and wove the ideas of believing in something bigger – whether psychic abilities, curses, or mainstream religion – into Only a Breath Apart. It made the story feel otherworldly, while still being completely rooted in the often horrific reality of everyday life.
5 HUGE STARS!
The Review:
I know any time I pick up a Katie McGarry novel, I’m in for a treat I’ll enjoy time and again. I’ve been a huge fan since her first publication, Pushing the Limits. I’ve read that book so many times, it’s embarrassing. And though I’ve taken huge pleasure in many of her books since, I think Only A Breath Apart is her VERY BEST so far!
This book slayed me!
Story/Characters…
Jesse Lachlin believes he’s cursed, and in order to keep himself safe, he must follow two rules. Don’t love and stay on the land. That’s what his mother taught him from an early age and for most of his young adult life, he believed it. He even went so far as to give up the one person he loved most, but now he needs her help or he’ll lose the only thing he has left – his land.
Scarlett Copeland has been betrayed by the people closest to her. It started with the love she thought was supposed to be protective and unconditional but turned acidic and violent. Her second betrayal was when the boy she called her best friend, turned his back on her. Now they need each other in order to move forward but Scarlett’s secrets are buried deep, and she’s not sure she can trust, let alone have faith in the boy who crushed her all those years ago.
What a ride! This book … from the moment it opens up, I was hooked, consumed, enthralled … you name it. If it meant being glued to the pages and not becoming part of the real world until the last page was read, that’s what I did!
Jesse was a breath of fresh air. I adored his character. Salt of the earth, down to his soul – Jesse Lachlin was pure goodness. He had some very adult decision to make and my heart just broke for him at every turn. Life had dealt him a crappy hand but it also gave him love and understanding when he needed it most. He was encircled by a support system he needed when it all came crashing down and I loved how he and his friends were written.
Scarlett, aka Tink, was a bright light in the middle of some very dark situations. Even though her life was spiraling out of control, I LOVED this girls strength. Her compassion, her zest for life and her love for herself and her family were inspiring. This author knows how to write a phenomenal hero, but she also knows how to write an equally praiseworthy heroine.
And as always, this author gives us a surrounding cast that’s more than just background work. They are an intricate part of the story that breathes color, life, and artistry to an already impressive canvas. I delighted in the scenes with Glory as she weaves a little woo-woo mystic into the story, and I very much enjoyed the “band of misfits” in Tink and Peter Pans circle. I hope we see more of them later on.
The Wrap Up:
Simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting, Only A Breath Apart is a beautiful, well-told, inspirational story about courage and hope, about growing up, about learning to love and to trust, even after life has given you reason to do neither. It’s also about learning to love yourself, find your true self and even when you feel lost, learning there is more than one path in finding your happiness.
The writing was stunningly brilliant. The characters were hauntingly unforgettable. The story was charming and poignant. And the ending was absolute perfection.
Five huge stars for Only A Breath Apart!
Just when I thought McGarry couldn’t get any better – she does. This had me absolutely spellbound in every way
You know that expression “It takes one to know one?” Katie McGarry plays around with that in this wonderful, affecting young adult novel, making you reconsider what it means to know someone who is only a breath apart from you.
Scarlett and Jesse grew up together and were best friends until they weren’t. Katie McGarry hints as to the cause of their rupture, not divulging the exact circumstances until late in the book, showing you that what you thought happened is actually far more heartbreaking.
Now, though, the two teenagers need each other. They don’t realize that at first, but thanks to someone with the power to see your spirit even when you desperately try to conceal it, they are forced together. Warily at first, even as you know that what they each fear in themselves and in each other is the same. They like to think that their struggles isolate them and make them different, but in fact, their struggles unite them.
Katie McGarry layers this story with a beautiful message of forgiveness, one rotted in a Biblical tale. You begin to see not only the gift but the necessity of forgiving someone, not because you hold them harmless but because the act of forgiveness frees you from all of that distrust and anger and hurt.
At times, this book takes dark turns. It’s difficult not to feel the pain that Scarlett and Jesse feel, even as Katie McGarry convinces you to have hope for them. And you do. You finish this book with a heart full of hope.
Scarlett and Jesse. Wow! A deeply emotional story — much more than a story of young love or contrived dilemmas. Beautifully told. Memorable. Highly recommend.
Final song tribute of “Perfect” by Ed Sheerin couldn’t be more perfect or applicable!
I love Katie’s books. Without exception, they are all deeply romantic and oh so swoony. Only A Breath Apart nails it on the intense romance but it’s something of a departure from Katie’s other books in that there is a hint of magical realism in it. It took me a beat to sink into the book, but Scarlet’s story gripped me tighter than maybe any Katie character yet. And Jesse…he’s messy and impulsive and he loves hard. It’s a really beautiful book.
Hands down, this is Katie McGarry’s best book to date. Just, my gosh, the feelings in this book. It drags the reader through the wringer right alongside Jesse and Scarlett and their pain and love and heartache seeps off the pages and into your soul. I cannot say enough good things about this book. Katie McGarry has a true talent for YA contemporary and here she outshines herself.
I’m going to get personal for a second, which I don’t always do in my reviews, but part of why I loved this book so so much is because teenage Teresa needed this book. And I’m not saying that the things that happened to Jesse/Scarlett happened to me, because that would be a lie, my life was not nearly as difficult, but there are certain aspects and themes and just certain things the characters struggled with that deeply resonated with me. Honestly, I still needed this book and I am so glad to have read it and more importantly I am glad this book exists for teenagers today.
Jesse and Scarlett are both such incredible characters and I love them both with all of my heart. They may seem to live in opposite worlds, but they have both lived very difficult lives. I wanted to reach into this book and hug them both so tightly and then hold their hands and help them find their way in life. But they really didn’t need me; they are both incredibly strong and come so far over the course of the book. I felt like a proud older sister watching them. And speaking of sisters, I adored the relationship between Scarlett and her sister Isabelle.
I always love how Katie McGarry so realistically portrays her characters, especially her adult characters. I mean, first off, I adored Glory, just adored her. But I also love how all of the adults are portrayed with flaws, they are not perfect and they do not make the right choices all the time and sometimes they think they know better when they don’t. And some of these adults are not redeemable in my opinion and are just not good, but then others may not seem that great but are actually people with good hearts who maybe don’t go about things the best way. Adults don’t always have all the answers here, but the good ones will listen and will help and I love that she shows a balance that there are truly terrible people in the world but there are also some really great ones as well.
Only A Breath Apart is a truly fantastic read and is one of those books I know I am going to revisit. I loved watching Jesse and Scarlett grow together again and grow up. This is my favorite book from Katie McGarry to date. She has never let me down yet, but this one was even more special. I cannot recommend this book enough
Such an enjoyable, sweet, coming-of-age romance. Jesse and Scarlett were an impressive young couple and individuals – I admired them tremendously for their strength and perseverance and the love they shared
Ok, this book was freaking amazing. I’ve had great luck with Katie McGarry books in the past, so I didn’t really have any expectation that this would be different.
Once I started the book, I was sucked into Scarlett and Jesse’s story. I loved seeing them as kids, and their friendship and connection.
I loved seeing them come back together, find their way back to being friends and confiding in each other.
From the first moment I met Scarlett’s parents, I didn’t like them. You could just feel that something was off..wrong. And of course, you quickly find out what’s going on.
I really wanted to feel bad for Scarlett’s mom, but every time I started to, she’d do something that made me dislike her. I realize that the situation she was in is a hard situation to get out of. But every time she had a moment of clarity, where she made sense, she quickly slipped right back into blaming everyone except the one person at fault.
Speaking of that person, I HATED him with a grand passion. Honestly, I kept expecting things to get even worse than what they did. I’m both grateful and a little disappointed they didn’t.
I am curious about what will happen with Scarlett’s sister though. Once Scarlett goes off to college, even though her sister has a way to contact her, it’s not like Scarlett is right down the hall anymore. Maybe she’ll eventually get a book and we’ll get to catch up with Scarlett and Jesse.
As for the Jesse side of things…I’m surprised to say that I didn’t hate his uncle Marshall as much as I expected to. He was introduced as someone you immediately perceive to be a villain in the story but he ended up being an ally. And a pretty darn good one.
Another surprise from the book was the palm reading. I’ll admit, I was fascinated by it. I just found it interesting and I’ll admit, it kind of made me want to get my palm read just to see what it says.
Overall, this book was an emotional rollercoaster and it was FANTASTIC. I can’t recommend it enough.
You know that feeling when you get 100% lost in a good book? That was me with Only a Breath Apart. It took a couple chapters for me to hit my stride, but once I did, I didn’t want to put it down. I just wanted to keep living in this world Katie created and breathing in her words. It was a beautiful book with a ton of heart.
I’m struggling a bit with how to make my words do justice to this gorgeous book Katie created. There’s something about her books that makes me just feel like I’m actually living in them. I’m not just reading them, I’m experiencing everything right along with the characters. As you can imagine, Only a Breath Apart put me through the wringer and a myriad of emotions. There was fear because of what Scarlett was experiencing at home. A ton of emotions I can’t even name over Jesse’s need to keep his land. Swoons over the relationship developing between the two of them.
I feel like Only a Breath Apart is a book best experienced knowing little going in, so I’m not going to get into the nitty gritty here. This book was a journey. Or, maybe more specifically, two journeys. Jesse and Scarlett were both fantastic characters who experienced a lot of growth over the course of this book. There were ups and downs, but that just made it all the more realistic. It was an easy and addictive read, an emotional and heartfelt story. If you enjoy YA contemporary, Only a Breath Apart needs to be on your TBR.
Favorite Quotes:
“People say our curse is that when we fall in love with someone, something horrible will happen to them, and we’re left to grieve forever.”
Holes in hearts hurt, and I have too many holes for me to be breathing.
I’m sick and tired of adults acting like we’re glass that will shatter if we fall. Sometimes they need to let us fall. Sometimes we need to make our own mistakes.
Gritty and real, Only a Breath Apart is a story of hope conjured from pain, strength drawn from innocence, and love earned from self-respect. Beautiful, poignant, and fierce.
Katie McGarry has a magical writing ability and she can make any type of reader get lost in her words. Only a Breath Apart is a stunning and emotional read, one that deals with social issues in a realistic way. This book brought many tears in my eyes but it also made my heart swell. The eloquence in which she writes this profound novel has left a deep imprint in my heart and I am so happy to have taken the time to read and essentially live within this world. I encourage any reader of both young adult fiction and romance to read McGarry’s new release as I think it will leave an impression on anyone who does so.
Only a Breath Apart is a story about two people who have gone their whole lives knowing how bad family can hurt those they are supposed to protect. It’s a story of overcoming ones past, making their own paths for the future, and hopefully finding love along the way. Neither Jessie nor Scarlett will have an easy road ahead of them, especially considering all the obstacles standing in their way, but the journey is inspiring. I don’t want to get into the plot because this here is a book that you need to FEEL without preconceived notions, but I will tell you it’s an emotional read. I didn’t think the book would have such an effect on my heart, but it did. And in all honesty, I loved it.
Fans of McGarry know what I am talking about when I say her books are truly breathtaking and that is no different with this one. Only a Breath Apart is an exceptional read and I highly recommend it to all readers.
Only a Breath Apart by Katie McGarry is young adult fiction at its finest!!!!
Scarlett and Jesse were inseparable as children, until they weren’t. Each of them gave the other exactly what they needed at the time. Their time was an escape from their dark and sad realities. Before high school, Jesse severed that unbreakable bond and his important friendship with Scarlett. Years later, they will need each other more than ever to escape their pasts and forge a happier future, but the question is…will they do that together or apart?
This is a beautiful tale of two people who carry scars, some physical but both deep in their hearts. McGarry gives us a look into their lives and hearts as the story is told from both of their POVs. As they spend time together, they will come to learn each other’s darkest secrets, and those secrets are painful. As is McGarry’s talent, she handles each one with love and sensitivity. This was a couple I loved from the very beginning.
Both Jesse and Scarlett were strong individuals who learned quickly how cruel the world is. Yet, they never gave up in the face of the obstacles they encountered. McGarry also created a cast of secondary characters that were essential to the story, such as Glory. Even those characters were complex and had hidden layers that were discovered throughout the book.
This is truly a book not to be missed. It gives hope for a new, brighter, and better future. McGarry weaved together a spectacular book full of her magical words that engulfed my heart and soul.
A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love.
Jesse believes that they are cursed, and he must not leave the land. However, in the event of his grandmother’s death, she made stipulations before he can inherit his family farm. One of it was the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl whom he drove away freshman year.
Glory, the town’s fortuneteller believes that Scarlet has the gift. Scarlett doesn’t believe it. Not when she can feel the land breathe with her, or when she feels the aura of the person next to her. She can’t be. What she is a young lady who just want to get out of her father’s controlling attitude and everything happening at home. She has hope now though, but problem is, it all lies in the boy who cause her first heartbreak.
I just love them both. They both need all the love that they can give. Jesse was loved by his mother, but his mother died. His gran died. He literally doesn’t have anyone but his friends, and Glory, if you count her. But I am just astounded of his passion for his land, and his dreams for it. As for Scarlett, she’s a dear, and she deserves more than what her parents can offer. I am perplexed by her strength to withstand the trials that crossed her paths and the fact that she survived it.
This book wasn’t just romance – it discussed the taboo topic of domestic violence. The cycle that we keep on turning our back on, but is happening in the society. Sometimes, it isn’t easy. But sometimes it might just take one phone call, one concern person to survive, or to escape the cycle.
I rarely read YA nowadays, but this book – had me mesmerized and completely breathless. It wasn’t an easy read. No. Too much emotions, too much anticipation, and too much ache in there – that you’d feel your heart might bust anytime soon. And yet, that beautiful hope that springs between the pages, the rebuilding of both trust and friendship and discovering love made all of it worthwhile.
To say I love it is an understatement. I devoured the book, read it slower than what I expected because somehow this book demands to be consumed unhurriedly, each pages, each passage, each dialogue draws you to the story. The characters passion, fight for everything and anything, and their survival would make you hooked to each page.
Only A Breath Apart is a story of love, hope, and forgiveness. It’s a story of strength, courage and survival. It’s a story you wouldn’t want to miss.
Jesse Lachlan has had a rough childhood. Everyone in their small town knows he’s trouble, especially Scarlett’s family living across the street. But Jesse is focused on the most important thing — the family land that means everything to him. With his grandmother’s passing, Jesse needs to find a way to keep the land in his hands and his remaining family isn’t making it easy.
Scarlett has been carrying around a huge secret regarding her family life. It’s a powder keg getting ready to explode on her, her mother and sister. Even though she had a falling out with Jesse years ago, she finds solace and understanding with him and they recover their relationship, although it’s a bit touch and go.
Scarlett and Jesse reminded me so much of other Katie McGarry’s characters in that they both are struggling with some real life issues and the adults in their lives aren’t being helpful. I loved how Jesse and Scarlett reached out to each other and found comfort in their relationship.
Of course, things get worse before they get better and Jesse and Scarlett have to make some heavy decisions. I loved that about this book because it gives a nice discussion point for readers who may be parents and/or teens.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It is long and goes into detail with these characters feelings, good and bad. There is a tremendous spirit in this book that I adored, especially some of the land-related spirituality that hit me right in the feels. I also loved Glory’s part in this book with the tarot and palm reading.
That being said, this book and its subject matter of abuse may not appeal to everyone. But that’s real life and I appreciate Katie McGarry’s efforts to portray these young adults in the most realistic manner. Most of all, I loved Jesse and Scarlett’s journey to adulthood and that it wasn’t easy for them.
Another great offering from Katie McGarry. Can’t wait for more!

I really enjoyed this book! The story is about Jesse and Scarlett, two kids who have grown up together, fallen apart, and through heartbreak and tragedy made their way back to each other. Both suffer devastating loss and learn how to survive their individual circumstances together. They find out who they are, and find true love along the way.
I enjoyed how the author gave both Jesse and Scarlett’s point of view in this story. Every other chapter is from the two main characters point of view. She really made me feel like I was on the journey with them, and kept me reading. I would love to read a follow up to this book!!
Young Adult Literature is not a genre that I usually read and review, but every time Katie McGarry has a new release, I always sign-up because her emotionally-charged stories about teenaged characters who struggle to find their place in the world as well as attempt to figure out how to deal with the baggage that always seems to follow them resonates with me, partly because I see some of the same behaviors and situations as a high school English teacher for the past 20 years and partly due to the way that McGarry crafts her characters and realistically portrays all that they must endure for individuals so young.
There’s nothing picture perfect about the world that McGarry’s hero and heroine live in; in fact, it’s anything but an ideal situation, and at the start of their story, Jesse Lachlin and Scarlett Copeland couldn’t be more at odds and separated by a mountain of obstacles and the heartbreak that Jesse inflicted on Scarlett some time ago. But, in order to heal…in order to forge a new path in life…in order to work through the pain and devastation that continues to weight them down…in order to move forward in a way that solidifies Jesse’s ownership of his family farm, their fractured friendship must be mended and mistakes and secrets must be admitted and discussed because the only way Jesse can get out from under his family’s curse and Scarlett can shed her demons are by creating a bond between them that is more powerful than anything they’re either hiding or running from as fast and as far away as they can.
In order to truly understand just how much Jesse and Scarlett need each other in the present, it’s necessary to venture to the past and witness their closeness as well as gain insight into what both of them are dealing with due to their respective families and the secrets that they keep. And in those flashbacks, it’s more than obvious that these two come from different worlds…from different sides of the divide and these ideas are reason enough to put Jesse and Scarlett’s friendship at odds, regardless of how tight they may be holding on to it.
Scarlett and Jesse’s story is not an easy one to read due to some of the subject matter explored, but readers shouldn’t let that stop them from reading Only a Breath Apart because amidst all of the overwhelming pain and the hidden feelings of helplessness and struggle is an empowering tale of second chances, of tormented souls finding their way into the light, of two people conquering what weighs them down and of a sense of hope found despite all of the darkness.
