An all wolf-shifter police force has been the only thing between humans and an unknown evil for centuries, but the pack is in danger of dying if they don’t find their promised mates soon. 80,557 words. Trevor Burbank is a shifter cop in a world of humans who don’t know the evil that wants them dead. If he does his job well, the humans will never need to know, but he feels like he’s working … feels like he’s working against the clock, because his pack is about to die. The females have all been killed, and the half-breeds they make when they mate with humans aren’t usually skilled or strong enough to fight.
Gabriela Carmi has lost almost everything that means anything to her way too fast and now she feels like she’s losing her mind too. On a quest to find something that won’t reveal itself to her, she feels as if she’s pining for someone who may not exist. So when an evil presence begins to follow her, she isn’t sure if her mind is slowly falling apart, or if the impossible is actually coming true. And when an instant attraction sparks between her and the dangerously sexy police officer sent to help her, it makes matters worse and better at the same time.
It’s a race against time to find the angel/human hybrid One True Mates that the pack’s spiritual leaders say truly exist. Saving the all the shifter clans is on everyone’s mind, except for the chosen, the One True Mates, most of whom don’t even know who or what they really are, or why they seem to be slowly losing their minds.
Steamy. Light swearing. High heat. You’ve NEVER read a shifter romance, or a fated mates romance like this before.

awesome read exciting
3.5 Stars
This series has the potential to really go somewhere, the plot idea is a strong one.
I did not mind that Ladew created her own category of shifters; the same old’ is just that ‘the same old
She also created some new myths and creation ideas (5 stars for the change up, ballsy, but good)
I found myself drifting from the story a few times, too many slow spots and scenes that left me with way more questions than answers.
I understand in a new series the first book sets the tone and provides some groundwork – for me this one fell a little short in that arena.
I felt there was just too many questions left unanswered, things brought up/shown to us but never recognized even though you know as a reader they are significant
Trevor:I truly liked him as a hero and as the lead, but if he is going to hold the Alpha position it needs to be reflected in his character.
Ella- Where to start with her? She comes off a little strange and not all there in the beginning. But if you read through you will learn that it is because she is the promised and the erratic mental instability is due to the change as well as her experiences growing up. When she is needed though that girls pulls up her big girl panties and wears them proudly! I actually like her.
I’m one of those people that LOVES massive world building. I think I enjoyed it more than some folks because it didn’t bother me that the romance is actually more of a secondary plot line to the establishment of this completely unique take on Shifters – which Ladew calls “Shiften” – and the current disarray of their world. I also have the advantage of having binged books 1-4 a few years ago and am now back relistening and writing reviews. I do remember being a bit more confused/overwhelmed the first time through.
While most of the story is from Trevor & Ella’s perspectives, Ladew does write a few sections from secondary characters’ points of view – including the main enemy. And there is a HUGE cast of characters and it’s a lot of information to take in. I think audio helps with that a bit as Michael Pauley does a decent job of giving some distinction between the characters and Ladew has given them very distinct mannerisms and characteristics.
It’s a lot of history of both the Shiften as well as Trevor and Ella to culminate in how they end up together and what it means for the world at large. From the romance aspect, this isn’t a cliffhanger as it ends in an HFN for the main couple. However, Ladew absolutely has several story arcs winding their way through the series so more questions remain to be answered. Overall, I enjoyed it and wanted to dive right into the next book, Dragon’s Heat.
Narration:
I’ve listened to tons of narrations by Michael Pauley… and at times he does have the tendency to sound a bit robotic or like an AI. So while he give the various characters unique “speaking lines” the main narration fell pretty flat for me, especially considering his other work. It gets better after the first book, but some folks may need to read this one.
I really love this authors take on shifters. its great worldbuilding and I love the characters!
This did NOT fulfill my cravings, but it was decent.
I was going to originally rate this book 4 stars, but I got tired of the book at the end. Simply because this book lacked a lot of the romance that I was looking for. 90% of this book was just chaos that was going on in the book which made the book interesting. I really think that the author should have focused more on the romance. It honestly didn’t make sense to me how two main characters would just have sex, NOT EVEN BUILD A BOND, and just get mated and married at the end. I will be continuing on in the series. Hopefully, book 2 will be better.
When you read this book please expect the thriller/suspense and NOT the romance.
I enjoyed this book very much. Just enough action and steam to keep me turning the pages until the end!
In ‘Shifter’s Sacrifice’ Trevor Burbank, a wolfen finds his ‘One True Mate’ when he meets Gabriela Carmi, a half and half angel woman that is the first true mate to be found after all the female shifters were eliminated thirty years before by an evil being from another realm.
Ella, as Gabriela likes to be called is confused by her powers and all the strange happenings in her life that makes her different. Trevor is part of the prophecy for the saving of all shiftens. Together they face evil, work to overcome danger and help the shifters all find hope for the future. The teamwork is a positive aspect of the plot.
The details of the plot keep the pages turning, the characters are wonderfully developed and I loved Troy and Trent, the brothers. The addition of a dragon and other shifters species working together made this an exceptional story line and one I will enjoy with the rest of the series.
Was a bit thrown by all the different types of shifters involved but once I got into the book, I enjoyed it.
This one took me a bit to get into being as in third person POV but one I did, it flowed pretty well. The teaser was correct; I’ve never read a shifter romance or fated mate romance like this before. Like most shifter romances, there’s a good vs evil within the storyline and plot. The difference with this one is our heroine is a half-breed, part Angel, which also supplied her with special powers she had no idea about. She is of course, the One True Mate to our shifter hero. The characters are perfectly flawed with their own insecurities and doubts so it was easy to relate to their emotions. This storyline kept me intrigued enough I want to read the next book to see where Lisa Ladew takes us.
Very good start to a series, the characters are by turns very sweet, and very protective badasses.
An interesting take on the Shifter universe. Liked that there are different shifters (not just wolves) and that they are all fighting a common enemy. The characters are great and I can see that as the series continues there will be lots of interconnected storylines. I look forward to more of this series.
Read the whole series and you can’t go wrong. Actually anything by Lisa.
Very disappointed, it started out like a good story, page turning read with such good potential but then as they began their relationship it became boring. I couldn’t finish it and I am happy I didn’t purchase any others from this series. I wouldn’t recommend it.
This was my first read by Lisa Ladew and it won’t be my last…I love the world building and all the side characters. This genre is relatively new to me this year and I’m looking forward to going along for the journey with these sexy, alpha shifter cops!
I love this book and author. The book was fast an great to read and the author had the story flowing nicely the whole book without getting bored.
Romance supernatural romance. Entertaining
