You’ve known Harper Allen and Jakob Titov since you met them in Taking Shots. You know their story already, right? Ha! You only think you do. In One-Timer, they’ll tell it for themselves. Harper has been hurt so many times, and she has no interest in anything more than a one-time thing, but Jakob Titov has other ideas. He is looking for his forever. He has his sights set on a girl who is so good … girl who is so good at blocking his attempts, she could be a star goalie in the NHL. Jakob is persistent, though, and he knows what he wants: Harper—forever. together, he knows they’ll make one hell of a team.
The last twenty years have been even better than they could have dreamed. But when their daughter comes home, informing them she’s giving up everything for a boy, they know it’s past time to tell the truth about the shutout they scored all those years ago to get where they are.
It wasn’t easy. But sometimes, that one-time thing leads to a fairy-tale kind of ending.

Fans of the Assassins series will be super happy with this book. It’s a fast read, but one that is so enjoyable. We get Harper and Jakob’s story. How their HEA came to be. I love the way Toni Aleo wrote this one. It’s a storytelling by Harper and Jakob to their daughter. I think that was my favorite part. This book will make you fall in love with Jakob. Anyone will want to find their own Jakob. Harper and Jakob’s journey isn’t an easy one, but so worth the journey. I just gobbled up this book. It’s a must read for sure!
I love the Assassins, the players, the staff and all the family members. I am so happy to read Jakob and Harper’s story, they have always been in the different books but this tells about the hearts of two amazing people with such love for each other. Jakob knew right away Harper was the “one”, I loved his determination, his persistence, and his vision of their life together. I really enjoyed revisiting Shea and Elli’s beginning. This book had all the “feels”, amazing characters and as every Toni Aleo book I’ve read the story was awesome. I am so captivated by this new generation of the Assassins family as they start their new adventures in love. I loved this book!
Love, Love, LOVED Jakob and Harper’s story. Who am I kidding? I love ALL of the Assassins, yeah, wrong, I love every book I have read by Toni Aleo. When this book hit my Kindle, I dropped EVERYTHING and started reading… Good thing I was off work that day…LOL!
However, there was something in this story that I LOVED even more. The backstory, or rather the reason for the story, the reason that Jakob and Harper tell their daughter their story. Yeaaah, sorry Ladies, I am not going to give anything away. You will have to read the book. I will say this to the author Toni Aleo, I NEEEEED two more stories from you. The first, Allison’s story, the second, Journey’s story…SIGH!!
This book also reminded me why I loved Jakob so much, and my first thoughts in Taking Shots (the first book in the Assassins Series and where we first met Harper and Jakob), and in this book, that Harper did not deserve such a fantastic man. However, as the story went on, my feelings on Harper changed. But I still wish I had had a Jakob of my own.
Thank you, Ms. Aleo, for writing Jakob and Harper’s story. I will say that I did not like, I wanted more. But, then again, I want more of EVERY book of yours that I have read. The stories you write just come so alive that I just want more. So, in my opinion, that is a good thing.
I was gifted with a copy of this book because I love to read romance, and to give my opinion of the story. Since, you have read this far, you know that I loved the story. In my opinion, I think you will love this story as much as I have. I will say this though, if you have not already, I really think you need to start at the beginning of the series, with Taking Shots, before reading this wonderful book. The whole series is phenomenal!!
Thank you for reading my review. This book is now available at your favorite retailer. Happy reading. <3
Finally getting Jakob and Harper’s story! I fell in love with Harper’s character back in the first book of this series. While it’s been a while since that book, I love how Toni was able to bring it to the readers through a flashback and also giving us an update into their marriage and continuation of their relationship. As a reader, it was interesting to read this story and then go back and piece together what was going on in the first book and it helped with context a lot. I also love that it isn’t the typical love story – Jakob was the one who continually pursued Harper while she was extremely resistant to it, but I also loved her reasoning as to why. There was a little issue with the timeline of this story and the last ones that Toni has written, because the age of their daughter Allison in comparison to Shea and Ellie’s daughter Posey was a little off, but nonetheless it was a great short story that had familiarity from the past books in this series. Can’t wait for the next one!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I thought I knew Harper Allen and Jakob Titov’s story from Taking Shots. Boy, was I wrong. I’m glad to be able to read the full love story between Harper and Jakob. This book takes me back to the book that helped me fall in love with the Nashville Assassins. I love how Toni takes us back to the beginning of the Assassins series. It was a great read and I would recommend this book to anyone. Toni has done a great job again.
This journey back through Harper and Jakobs relationship is everything I was hoping it would be and then some. I have waited (im)patiently for years since I first read about them In Elli and Sheas book first. I wanted more….I needed more! Harper is that Kick butt take no nonsense strong woman. She doesn’t want or need a man. A love em and Leave em girl. Jakob is sweet and falls in love hard and fast. Hes looking for the one. He finds Harper and knows she is it. She needs a little more convincing that this can last.
Fast forward to marriage, babies, laughter, tears, happiness, heartbreak. You name it this couple had it. But hearing their story(and the other couples from Assassin we know and love) through their eyes, is simply perfection. Showing the readers that love isnt perfect, and although looking at them you may think it is but they have had to struggle and work hard just like any other couple.
It was a short, easy, adorable read. It will bring you back to the couple you love and needed an update on.
All the warm and fuzzies and every other feeling in between. It was like falling in love with this series for the first time all over again.
Toni finally gave us Harper and Jakob’s story but really gave us a different version of Taking Shots which I LOVED! So not only did I get to love on Jakob and Harper, I got tp fall for Shea and Elli again.
Toni wrote a short but packed story that will have all her real Assassins fans giddy with joy. I have been with Toni since the beginning and each book just gets better and better and I’m not sure I could ever let go of this obsession with the Assassin family and my favorite series.
Throw your hands in the air and dance around, we finally get Jakob and Harpers story! Now like all Assassin fans I have been wishing and hoping we’d get a glimpse into this established couples story and boy did we, it was perfect!
When their daughter is about to make some questionable decisions it’s time for Jakob and Harper to bring out the “how we got together” story to let her know what a true relationship looks like. It isn’t easy and it isn’t a one way road. It takes work and respect and a deep understanding of how both people work.
Enjoy this funny and swoon worthy glimpse into the world of the Assassins we haven’t had before.
A blast from the past! With the seventeenth book in her beloved Nashville Assassins hockey series, Toni Aleo goes back in time to bring us a novella of Harper and Jakob’s story and an update on what they’ve been up to throughout the years. For fans of the series, it’s a great little nod to a couple of previous couples … and for new readers, it’s a way to catch up on some previous characters you might have missed. There’s not a huge amount of hockey in the book, but it’s a sexy and sweet love story rolled into a teaching moment with their adult kid. I enjoyed it!
This book was very interesting to read. You think you know the characters and their story, but you don’t. This is their chance to tell you themselves what they went through to be together. It also gives you history on Elli and Shea.
Having both Jakob and Harper tell their story jointly was epic. You get to see them separately and together and how they work together. I think Ally’s desire to have what they have is a great goal. They have an amazing chemistry and bond. They are so different and yet they work together seamlessly. I wish that for any married couple, but most don’t have it.
I think you will enjoy this trip back in time. I know I did.
Jakob Titov is the book boyfriend I never knew I needed but now I’m so glad to have! I love a man who falls fast and knows exactly what he wants and what he wanted from the moment he saw her was Harper. Harper is a tough girl who’s been hurt before and isn’t interested in settling down. When I read Shea and Elli’s book originally, I always wondered why someone who had such a loving family would be so afraid of love, and this book explains that more.
I loved that this book was a little different in that we already know that they got their HEA, but we never knew the entire story behind it and we get to read it by way of them explaining to their grown daughter that love isn’t always perfect and easy. A lot of times I get caught up in books and the romance and forget that real life doesn’t end at the HEA. This books shows a long term relationship and touches on the ups and downs that you are bound to go through.
As a long time fan of Toni Aleo’s Assasins series, it was great to get a different view of the epic Shea and Eli romance, and also a little peak at Toni’s next book that involves their daughter. I would definitely suggest reading Taking Shots if you haven’t already, either before or after this book.
I was waiting to read Harper and Jakob’s story since the first book of the ‘Assassins’ series. Through the series we get bits and pieces of their story but it was never enough. So I want to start my review by thanking Toni Also for this inspiring story and reminding me nothing worth comes easy.
Harper and Jakob is married for twenty years and have two kids, Allison and Journey. Their happily-ever-after didn’t come easily, it took a lot of work but most people around them including their kids didn’t know what they went through. When their strong willed daughter Ally comes home and let her family knows that she is dropping out from college and everything she work too hard to achieve to follow her worthless boyfriend, Harper goes off the rails. Jakob being his calm and charming self and knows how to deal with carbon copy of his wife, he decides sharing Harper’s and his story to show Ally love is not selfish and needs sacrifices from both sides. So Jakob takes us back twenty years…
Harper Allen is love them and leave them kind of gal. After getting heartbroken many times, she gives up searching for her prince charming. Even though, she is a romantic in heart, she is not brave enough to give her heart to someone. Jakob is not looking for a hook-up, he is searching for his forever. When he laid his eyes on Harper during the team’s photoshoot, he know she is different. What he doesn’t expects is getting kicked out of Harper’s apartment after an amazing night. One night was enough for him to get hooked. Even though Harper rejects him every chance, he knows she is the one and he will fight until she sees that. Their relationship definitely wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. They struggled so much, faced so many heartbreaks but they overcome all unfortunate situations together. They were always there for each other and never gave up. Seeing the every step of their relationship and how it blossomed was amazing, it was so real.
‘One Timer’ is captivating, heartwarming and inspiring story that you won’t be able to put it down. I cannot wait to read the next books of the new generation and see older versions of my favorite characters. You can easily read this book as a standalone but I highly recommend you to read the whole series. I don’t even remember how many times I read these books but after reading Harper and Jakob’s story, I went back and start re-reading it AGAIN!!! 🙂
Would I recommend this book: Yes
Would I re-read this book: Already did 🙂
Would I read future books by this author: Yes
One Timer
My feelings are all over the place over this book, what an emotional ride. Fantastic weaving of the past and the present with the expected snark, laughter, tears, and a little crazy mixed in.
Jakob and Harper were wonderful in Taking Shots and I’m totally stoked that we were given a chance to go deeper into there story. Great to meet the kids you can definitely see the crazy in Ally from Harper and the patience in Journey from Jakob.
Their loss, struggles, and determination is a great reminder to Ally that when you find the one they will always put you first. Your person will always be there to love you no matter what and will respect you and your decisions.
Harper does not do relationships one time and your done. That is until she meets Jakob. Jakob falls for Harper on first site and is determined to make her his. Harper tries to fight him on it but after a few times of being together she does agree to date him but tries to keep it light. His persistence pays off but she is still keeping him at arms length with her heart. When an injury threatens his life it shakes her to the core and forces her to face the truth.
One timer is a more in depth look at Jakob and Harpers story. Jakob and Harper and been around since the series started, but we are finally getting their story through their eyes! I loved how their story was written. I love how they retold their story to their daughter and showed her what real love was! They have an amazing love story and it was great to see that they were more in love now than when they first fell in love. This book was one of my all time favorites in the series!!
I loved this story!
It was great to hear from Jakob and Harper. It was great getting to read a love story from the start to present time. Being able to tell their daughter that their love was anything but perfect. Will Ally be able to see that love is not perfect all the time?
I enjoyed One Timer very much and look forward to reading more from Toni!
One Timer is the story I needed know I needed in my life.
To be fair I have never been a huge fan of Harper; she has always kind of rubbed my the wrong way. Jakob on the other hand has always been a favorite of mine.
I went into One Timer a skeptic but I left with a huge smile on my face and this warm feeling within my chest. One Timer was all the things I expect from an Assassins novella and from Ms. Aleo. It was sweet and sexy.
One Timer is the that little bit of story that helps fill in a few blanks for those who have read every Assassins novel.
Cheers and 5 Stars for One Timer and Ms. Aleo!
The characters come across as annoying and not very interesting. It just didn’t make me really invested in their lives and story of building their relationship. The beginning was promising and I liked that Jakob was telling their daughter how he met her mother, but it just got weird to me. I found Jakob’s actions to be very stalkery and disturbing. He was obsessive over her with the calling multiple times in a row constantly. If that ain’t a red flag to keep clear, I dunno. Sadly, this was not the story for me.
One of my all time favorite series of standalones is back! I’ve always been curious about Jakob and Harper’s story since we’ve only seen snippets, so when I got my hands on this beauty I couldn’t wait to dive in.
What I loved about their story was that it didn’t start at the beginning. It started 20 years later and you get to go on the journey backwards. It runs along the same time frame as Taking Shots, so seeing Shea and Elli again was just what I needed. One Timer was good because as a reader, it ties the original Assassins generation with the one new.
I loved every bit of their story and the journey we saw them go on.
One Timer is the novella that Toni Aleo fans have been asking for and we finally have it! It was so worth the wait too! Harper and Jakob were introduced as characters with a hard and rocky start, but ended up with an epic love story. So freaking epic!!
Harper Allen is not looking for a relationship. Jakob sees her for the first time and knows that she is the one for him. How terrifying for someone who has been hurt before and doesn’t want to go through that pain again. These two have so many ups and downs, but when you’re meant to be, it is going to happen! Jakob works hard at breaking down those walls she has built and he eventually succeeds in showing her that she can trust him.
This story is told as a way to show Allison, their daughter, that love is about trust, patience, sacrifices, and most of all it’s work. Truly a fantastic read!!
I think I’ve been secretly waiting for Harper and Jakob’s story since Taking Shots. And I loved the format of One Timer. Harper and Jakob have been together for 20 years but now they’re facing a crisis with their daughter. They decide to tell her the truth of how their relationship started. One Timer mostly runs parallel with Taking Shots and I really want to reread it now. However, it offers the perspective of Harper and Jakob on their own relationship as well as Shea and Ellie’s.
Jakob falls head over heels for Harper on their first meeting. They start out as a one-night stand that doesn’t end. Harper has been horribly burned in the past and is very hesitant to have a relationship. Jakob is persistent without being creepy and wears down her resistance to a relationship. What I also liked was the views into their lives later and the stress their relationship underwent when Jakob retired. One Timer was the story I always wanted for Harper and Jakob!
