One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial “Brides for Indians” program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man’s … man’s world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Interesting story
I read this book a long time ago and it is one that I recommend to everyone. Also, I have bought several copies for my girlfriends. Glowing reviews. A very moving and emotional book. Again I can’t recall all the specifics because I read this book a million years ago. Perhaps it’s time I reread it!!!
It was a very interesting mix of history and fiction. In fact it blended so well I had to read the writer’s notes more than once to determine if in fact this was entirely fact based. It was sad at times, sweet at times, but entertaining all the time.
Fabulous book.
My husband is a lover of all things Western and is often pressing books on me that I pretend to want to read but never do. I’m so glad I listened to him this time. Tragic yes and at times a bit hard to believe yet a book I will never forget.
Different book, but loved it.

This was a great book! It is a fictional novel but, had me believing it was real. Excellent writing
This book is awesome! I would consider this an alternate reality. Of how things could have been and have still merged into the world we know now. A great read!
It offered insight into the lives of women in the 1880’s and their circumstances that might offer hope of a better life as wives of American Indians.
Loved this book and the history and fiction of it all.
A unique story that was heart breaking..not what I expected but was a nice read
Interesting premise, how the government thought this could work boggles the mind.
A view of a part of Western history that is not talked about.
