A woman struggling to raise her daughter alone in a small Alaskan town finds her simple existence upended when the father of her child returns. . . . Sweet Home, Alaska, was once a thriving, idyllic town, where A Stone’s Throw Hardware and Haberdashery and the Sisterhood of the Quilt were the cornerstones of the community. Then, in one fatal moment, two young lives were cut short, and … short, and everything changed. Now the Stone family businesses have closed, the diner is in the red, and the population has dwindled to 573.
After the tragic accident that took her sister’s life, Hope McKnight discovered she was pregnant, and gave up her dreams of college to raise her daughter. When Donovan Stone returns to sell his family’s properties and to cut final ties with Sweet Home, he’s shocked to find Hope still there–and a single mother. The pull between Hope and Donovan is as powerful as ever. But so are the secrets and lies stemming from that long-ago tragedy. Will they be able to overcome the past, or will the heartbreak of bygone days destroy their love again?

This is the first book that I have read by Patience Griffin and I certainly enjoyed this one. I know that I will be reading more of hers in the future. This book has all the emotional feels. I laughed at parts, cried during some and could not put it down.
The characters were great, I certainly enjoyed Piney. Hope and Ella were the perfect mother daughter combination with the usual problems. Donovan was also good. Would love to learn more about Rick and Sparkle.
A great book that you don’t want to miss
ONE SNOWY NIGHT is the first book in the Sweet Home, Alaska series, and I can’t wait for more. The writing has a richness to it and is vivid in its descriptions. The small town of Sweet Home rises to the occasion of putting on a Christmas Festival that rivals the one Donovan’s grandparents used to hold. Donovan is only back in Sweet Home to ready the lodge for sale. Will his memories and those he loves keep him there, or will he be off to Florida, where he plans to settle? The story has a wonderful flow, and the characters, while guarded, seem to lay everything on the line and let their hearts shine through.
Hope and Donovan were childhood friends who dated until a fateful night when her sister and his brother died in a car accident. Seventeen years have passed, and Donovan’s in for a surprise when he returns to town. Hope’s daughter, Ella, has a lot of issues, though she and her mom have a good relationship, mostly. Unfortunately, she and some of her friends are headed down the wrong path. AA and alcoholism are woven throughout the story nicely without being preachy.
The story is filled with heartwarming moments as well as emotional challenges, and the Christmas holiday pulls everyone and everything together. I love when characters can look past the heartbreak to what is good and healing. Several secondary characters stand out. The owner of the Hungry Bear, a combination grocery store and diner, has a heart of gold (and has feelings about the future, which always, eventually, come true). The quilters in town are also a feel-good addition.
The characters are well drawn, and the plot is filled with secrets and surprises. I thoroughly enjoyed the happily ever after. There’s an excerpt of the next book in the series, ONCE UPON A CABIN, which only whet my appetite for more. And I truly love the cover for ONE SNOWY NIGHT.
Ms. Griffin is a new-to-me author, and I look forward to reading more of her books and not just those in this series.
I wasn’t sure about this one at the beginning; it starts out depressing with teenage alcoholism. However, I gave it a chance and I’m so glad I did. Griffin turns the low start into a really upbeat story that I really enjoyed. Donovan wasn’t my favorite hero, but Hope and her daughter made up for it.
If you haven’t read Patience Griffin, you are missing an author who can tell a story, pull at your heart, and make you happy. I’ve read all the Kilts and Quilts series that she’s written, set in Scotland. So, when Patience said she was writing a new series set in Sweet Home, Alaska, I couldn’t wait to read it. This book has all the “feels”, and her characters are so well developed and real. I read this over a three-day time period, and I cried every day.
Hope McKnight, has struggled since her senior year of high school. She is strong, and though she has lost almost everything in her life, she is raising her daughter on her own.
Donovan Stone left Sweet Home during High School, after an accident killed his younger brother. He has overcome most of his obstacles, becoming a self-made success, selling his startup company for millions. Seventeen years later, his grandfather dies, and he has to return to Sweet Home to liquidate the properties he has been left. He brings along with him his business manager to help him with the family home and business.
Both of the two main characters, and the supporting cast are well written, with realistic thoughts and feelings. The story intertwines Hope and Donovan thinking about their past, and Hope’s story is especially poignant. I can’t say enough about how much I loved this book. The descriptions of the town and surrounding area are detailed, and only add to the enjoyment of the book. Patience Griffin is a wonderful writer, and also a quilter, and quilts always play a prominent part in all her books. Book 2 is due in November 2021, and I, for one, cannot wait to read it!
Hope McKnight is a single mom. Funds are tight. She has recently laid her father to rest which was heart-wrenching for her and her seventeen year old daughter Ella. Ella has taken his death particularly hard and has started drinking which is an added concern in Hope’s life. Ella (Isabella) was named after Hope’s eleven year old sister Izzie(Isabella) who died in a car accident seventeen years ago. Hope was driving that night and had been at a New Year’s Eve party. Yes, she drank some wine but not enough to test over the legal limit. Still Hope blamed herself for the death of Izzie and her boyfriend Donovan Stone’s younger brother Beau. Donovan blamed Hope too. He told her he never wanted to see her again and not to try to contact him. So when Hope found out she was pregnant with Donovan’s baby she never told him. When Hope heard Donovan was back in town to sell his deceased grandfather’s businesses she was hoping she wouldn’t run into him. Fat chance! Of course she would run into him. Sweet Home, Alaska is a very small town. It was inevitable. Hope’s feelings for Donovan reignited but she believed Donovan wouldn’t love her back.
Donovan Stone left his hometown of Sweet Home, Alaska shortly after the death of his brother Beau. He joined the Marines which was a very good thing for many reasons, but the two major ones were that he got help with his alcoholism problem and his aptitude with computers was recognized so he got excellent training which led to a prosperous career after leaving the Marines. When he returned to Sweet Home after his grandfather’s death it had been seventeen years since he had been there. He needed to get in, get the properties sold and get out. He hoped he wouldn’t run into his high school girlfriend Hope, the one he loved but blamed for his brother’s death. So how did he end up staying to renovate the businesses and hiring Hope?
One Snowy Night by Patience Griffin is the first book in her new series, Sweet Home Alaska. This is a great start to the series. It a heartwarming story of forgiveness and love. I liked how the people of the town came together to support Hope and Donovan. Small town romances are one of my favorites. Add in that this is a second chance romance and it’s a perfect combination.
