A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons. New York Times best selling author William R. Forstchen now brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real…a story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, a war … America loses a war, in one second, a war that will send America back to the Dark Ages…A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP). A weapon that may already be in the hands of our enemies.
Months before publication, One Second After has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future…and our end.

Average, nothing special, but you might find it interesting if you’re just starting to read stories about an apocalypse. Premise is reasonable, reaction to it? Decide for yourself. Learn to build a Faraday cage?
Interesting read…I was not aware of EMP threat until now. In today’s international political state you can’t take a fictional story lightly. Well written and realistic story. Enjoyable read.
Obviously I hope it never happens.
One of the best written apocalyptic / EOTWAWKI books ever produced first book of an excellent trilogy.
I had never heard of an EMP before reading this book. And I gotta say, it scared the daylights out of me. Talk about educational! I had no idea something like that could happen. And the consequences of no power. OMG. The book certainly changed the way I look at things now.
Chilling!
Based on a valid concept (EMP) the response of the isolated town and its leaders as opposed to the outsider is probable and scary. The book generates thinking about a very real possibility.
Fantastic read. Just finished it for the second time, years later.
Very good and thought provoking
This is a sobering look at how fragile civilization really is. It shows what would be required of us to survive such a scenario, and how people can rise to the challenge.
Good book, but kind of predictable during the last few chapters.
Please don’t buy this book. (1) extensive ads for smoking–author paid? (2) Right wing anti-science propaganda (3) Newt Gingrich wrote foreward (4) The attack on the country described by the author is unrealistic and also two wars behind–Generals always fight the last war. In our case, the author is way behind the current situation. Our country was already successfully attacked in 2016 and we still live with that result. The most likely next attack will be via the internet as an attack on our utilities to disable them according to US spy agencies reports. When that next attack happens, we may end up in a calamity just as severe as this author describes but not as a result of the attack this author obsesses on.
Good pacing. Liked all three books.
A must read. Realistic. Eye opener. Makes you think of what could easily happen.
This book will make you look and think differently then you have before. While our world degenerates to just surviving, mankind loses its humanity. We ought to find a way to make sure this kind of attack never happens.!!!
Excellent post apocalyptic series. If you believe it couldn’t happen to you, you really need to read this.
Sobering storey, but the writing lacked any real pull.
One Second After is based on the premise of an Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) attach on the United States, following the immediate aftermath and how one community comes together and adapts. The premise is realistic, and the story is easy to read, carrying you from event to event and crisis to crisis smoothly. Well worth your time to read.
This book gave a great look at what might happen after government falls and an intellectual takes charge of a small town.
One of the best books I’ve read in the last couple of years. Everyone should read “One Second After.” Each day that passes seems to bring us closer to this scenario becoming a reality. Well-written, well-researched, and well-edited.
