This is one of those thrillers that sort of sneaks up on you. For the first 25% or so, I was having a hard time staying engaged, and then, all of a sudden, I got totally wrapped up in the mystery and the characters became wonderfully complex and engaging. I read it in a few hours because I just had to know what was going to happen next, not just with the murder investigation, but also with all the sub-plots Karen McManus snuck in. I can’t say I loved the big reveal at the end, but there was so much else to like throughout the book that I found it didn’t actually matter who killed Simon. This is a great read for fans of Gossip Girl and With Malice!
I read a description of this book as “The Breakfast Club, with murder”—and yes, that’s perfect. The story revolves around four characters stuck together in detention: the jock, the socialite princess, the nerd, and the drug dealer. But wait…there’s also the annoying gossip/troublemaker, who ends up dead. Which one is the murderer? Each character has a motive, yet each is also sympathetic and evolves along the way. So who did it? The plot hums along and I enjoyed it completely! A very fun read.
I finished this book in less than a day. The characters are all created amazingly and when you find out their secrets, you are completely surprised. In the beginning, I brushed everything off as it was nothing. Once the characters started to evolve and see their true potential, I started studying that book like it was an Algebra Textbook. The book began making me a little angry but only because they would have a lead on one character but then get a lead on another. At that point, I practially wanted to rip my hair out. By the end, the characters were completely different than what I thought they were. By far, the biggest surprise was finding out who the murderer and the accomplice were. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who like YA mystery novels that add in a lot of real world situtations.
I was recommended this book by my friend and at first, I was skeptical because it seemed very cliche. Then I decided to actually read it and OMG, it is so good. The characters are cliche type of people in school. There is the jock, the popular girl. the nerd and the bad boy(drug guy). I never realized the subtle clues that were given but once the conclusion was discovered, I couldn’t believe how I missed it! Totally recommend it!
I really enjoyed this. The book starts off like the Breakfast Club – 5 people who don’t really hang out caught in detention. But when one of them dies suddenly it goes in another direction and turns into an Agatha Christie like mystery as they try to solve who did it. One of them is lying… but which one?
I really LOVE this book!! When I was in 6th grade my ELA teacher recommended this book to me and I wasn’t that interested at first. But when I had to read the book because ( it’s a long story) so I ended up reading the whole book and honestly I fell in LOVE with it!!! It’s actually one of my favorite books right now! I really liked the character’s development and I also loved the romantic relationship between Brownyn and Nate. This book has a mixture of sadness and happiness. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE 13 and above.
I loved this book! I could not put it down. If you like suspense, then this book id for you, trust me!
The premise: 5 students, a jock, nerd, cheerleader, druggie, and social scene blogger end up in detention together. The blogger dies of anaphylactic shock and the police determine someone put peanut oil in the cup he drank from. The thing is everyone hated this dude, Simon, because he blogged about everyone’s secrets. His final post gets released post-mortem and each of the others from detention are exposed for supposed scandalous behavior.
The book is told through the voices of the four characters that were in the room with Simon when he died and the reader is challenged to figure out who is lying, who is telling the truth, and who killed Simon.
It bothered me that this story was about a teen’s death and that the characters’ reputations were plunged into turmoil. I wanted it to be a dystopian book, but I can guess that similar situations happen in high schools all the time. Obviously, this is fiction, fictional characters with magnified traits to portray each type of social sect.
I tend to get very involved in my characters and sat on the edge of my seat wondering which teen killed Simon, or if they worked together. The ending was both surprising and original and I won’t say more about that so as not that so as not to spoil it. There are many players to doubt and to question and I couldn’t have guessed the ending. Pay attention and you may be able to though.
This book was wonderful! It definitely keeps you guessing!
ONE OF US IS LYING was fantastic! The mystery was strong–I had a few suspicions but was never certain–and I absolutely loved all the characters. Which, with 4 POVs, is no easy task. The ending was exciting and wrapped everything up nicely.
A truly wonderfully written murder mystery with some of the best characterization I’ve read in a very long time. I hear there’s a sequel coming out and I can’t wait.
This book would be fantastic for adrenaline-seeking readers. By that, I mean that this book is fantastic in keeping you entertained for hours, nonstop. The book is based on a “Murder Mystery” where someone seems to murder one of their fellow students. If you pay close attention, you will figure out who killed who. The book may be slightly harsh for any child smaller than the age of 12. Personally, I read at the age of 11, and even though it was heavy, the enjoyment was completely unbeatable. It would also be a good challenge for “tweens”. The book contains a bit of everything – romance, mystery, fantasy, drama, school issues, etc. There are a few swear words every now-and-then, but I would assume that should not be an issue, since then again, it’s English and it is a way to show spirit. Definitely a 5-star rating! Enjoy your read!
Amazing! I didn’t want to read it as I knew it would come to an end!!! X
Five kids are sent to detention on crisp autumn day…and only four leave the room alive. The kids are stereotyped straight from “The Breakfast Club”, the jock, the brain, the prom queen princess, the thug, and the outcast. The question becomes, “which one killed Simon”?
Even though I had a pretty good idea of where this book was heading about halfway through, the story still held me captive, the players in this drama were well fleshed out and relatable…I found myself hoping that whoever killed Simon was not one of the four, that it was someone else.
This book surprised me. Not to give out any spoilers but every time something new unraveled with one of the characters it jerked the story into a whole other direction. After I read it I thought “that is an interesting thing to write about…”
One of us is lying is about a group of kids who are in detention and by the end one of them is dead. Through the whole book you are trying to figure out who did it. The characters are cliche type of groups in high school. You have the jock, the popular girl. the nerd and the bad boy.
This book is my favorite book of all time. I’m not trying to hype it up for anyone but i really love it. The characters go through so much and develop so much. which is what i love. By the end of the book they are totally different people.
You should definitely read this book. you might like it you might not and that’s okay. If you do read it i hope you like it as much as i do.
This book was incredible. Loved it so much. Here’s my summary of the book.
On September 24th, five students, Addy, Brownyn, Nate, Simon, and Cooper walk into dentition. Addy is your typical, gorgeous high school student, Brownyn is headed for Yale on the path she’s on, Cooper is the star athlete, Nate is the bad boy in the group, and Simon is infamous in the school, the creator for AllThat, the schools gossip app. Not even an hour in detention and Simon is headed to the hospital after his water cup was traced with peanut oil. He’s dead by the end of the day. After finding out that Simon planned to post something about each one of the four students on his app the next day, they all go from unfortunate witnesses to suspects overnight. They become infamous in the country; everyone seems to want the first scoop on the four students. They all say they didn’t do it, they all had something to hide, but which one is lying? “Everyone has secrets, how far would you go to protect yours?”
One of my favorite books! I love love love this book! I couldn’t put it down that’s how good it is! It reminds me if a Pretty Little Liars mixed with 13 Reasons Why.
So fantastic! Suspense with Breakfast Club…who wouldn’t love that???
ONE OF US IS LYING by Karen M. McManus is a great murder mystery that left me wanting more. At first, I wasn’t sure how much I would love some of the characters, but found that I loved each and every one of them. There were a lot of secrets revealed for all the characters that kept me reading until late at night. It was a lot like BREAKFAST CLUB, but with a murder.
The first chapter begins the whirlwind with the murder. It was a really messed up way to kill that actually freaked me out. It was clever and realize later why it was so clever. Then from then on you see what happens to each of the characters and POVs of how they are dealing with being investigated for the murder. Each of them have different motives, and each have different resources, along with their own secrets that are being dug up. It was non-stop action!
My favorite character was Nate, but they were all amazing. Each one of them had a lot of layers, a lot character development, and I was rooting for each and every one of them. The story brings up a lot of issues high schoolers face, and I liked that there were a lot information provided for anyone that is suffering with the issues these characters faced. I can’t wait to read more from this author! If you love murder mysteries and young adult novels, I highly recommend!
