Lady Penelope Wakefield has a plan to avoid a society marriage she does not want or welcome. Her brilliant plan is foolproof until a handsome sexy rector comes to her rescue. Rector Hugh Tarleton has no patience for the Society philanthropists, his flock in London’s worst part of town so when he sees the daughter of a marquess is kidnapped and brought to the rookery, he vows to protect her. Penelope was desperate to escape such a marriage so she must be ruined one way or another. Penelope and Hugh are attracted to each other and grow closer even though they come from different backgrounds. Can a sweet love be worth the gamble, can they overcome obstacles to be together? I loved this sweet story of a two people falling in love and then finding a way to overcoming family and society’s obstacles. I have voluntarily read the excellent book and here’s my honest review.
This is amusing, romantic, entertaining and sweet. When Penelope doesn’t find a husband at the end of the season, her parents decide to marry her off to the man who at one time was to be her father-in-law. Pen wants nothing to do with the old lecher, so she sets up a kidnapping, thinking that she’ll be ruined and the old man wouldn’t want her anymore. The problem with that is that she actually gets kidnapped, and Hugh, the rector in St. Giles, rescues her. She tells him why she is doing it and he agrees to help. A strong attraction between them tortures them because neither think it’s possible for them to marry. And while Hugh is doing his best to be a gentleman, Pen is trying to get him to actually ruin her. Things don’t go the way they’re supposed to, a few twists dictate their actions. Pen is great, she’s bold, determined and flirty. Hugh is stubborn, chivalrous and caring.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
In a time when marriages are usually arranged by father’s for financial or political gains, Penelope finds herself about to become engaged to a man old enough to be her grandfather. She decides to fake her own kidnapping and if she stays out overnight she will be ruined in the eyes of society and he will refuse to marry her. Things do not work out like she had planned but in the end there is a surprise wedding that even she had not thought would have happened. The story is well written and entertaining. I would highly recommend this book as a great read.
What a temptation, to fall in love with a simple, considerate, kind man. But Hugh Tarleton is only a rector and he has no right to know her, much less to hope for a life with her.
A young Lady Penelope Wakefield is trying to avoid a marriage demanded from her father, and to escape a life without a considerate and kind man in it.
One night of temptation is bringing them together, but fate is opening a road to love for them.
Only one night to get to know those two young people, but enough to fall in love with their characters, kind souls and hopes.
I was waiting for my wicked duke, but Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley are promising to bring him to me in some next wonderful story, and till then my five stars and recommendation for this book along with previous ones.
This is the final book in the delightful Wicked Duke Club series. Lady Penelope Wakefield is being forced by her heartless parents to wed the father of her former betrothed who had died suddenly of an illness a year and a half ago. Now the Earl of Findon is old enough to be her grandfather and not a very nice man to boot, so like the other ladies in this series, Penelope takes her future in her own hands, by arranging to be kidnapped. But the plan goes awry and she ends up bring rescued by Hugh Tarleton, who is the rector of a poor neighborhood in London, St Giles. He went to Oxford with the Dukes and Eastleigh is a close friend, thus the connection to the Club. Penelope explains to Hugh her dilemma and he offers to protect her. In that one night that they spend together in the church, they get to know each other. Hugh is looking for a wife who wants to help others, while all Pen wants is kindness, something that she never received from her parents or siblings. Do they two have a future together, when Pen’s father is determined to marry her to Findon, for his own greedy purposes?
I received a free ARC as a member of the author’s review crew. This is my voluntary and unbiased review.
The story is a wonderful way to relax and take a journey to another time. To follow along and see how a couple come to terms with their situation and marry. It has some twists and turns along the way, that only add to keep you turning pages.
My free opinion. Thanks.
ONE NIGHT OF TEMPTATION is the sixth book in the Wicked Dukes Club series. Though it would stand on its own, there is a lot of interaction with characters from the previous books in the series.
This just may be the most romantic of all of the historic romances I have ever read. Temptations, interruptions, and frustrations filled the night for Lady Penelope and Pastor Hugh, but there was never a doubt where it should lead.
The villains – the man Lady Penelope’s father hopes to force her to marry as well as her father – are deliciously evil. The Earl of Findon is a dastardly, slimy, creep, that it was fun to jeer. I could almost hear the ominous organ music as each took the stage in my mind.
In the fashion of the old Dudley Do-Right cartoons (yes, I’m that old), Rector Hugh Tarleton is honorable, but fierce. This just may be my favorite of all of the historical romances I have ever read… EVER!
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via NetGalley, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

One Night of Temptation by Darcy Burke
Wicked Dukes Club #6
Throughout the series we have had glimpses of Rector Hugh Tarleton. Each time he appeared I felt more and more intrigued by him and wanted to know more. He sounded like a man dedicated to the people in his flock located in a less than desirable neighborhood. So, when he appeared to save Lady Penelope Wakefield from an attempted kidnapping gone awry I was more than curious to see how it would work out.
Penelope’s father saw her as a pawn to use to further his own interests and though she knew this was her lot in life was not willing to marry the man her father chose for her (with good reason). She came up with an alternative she thought would save her and thus ended up in the care of Hugh for a night. With scandal averted (not what Penelope was hoping for), the wedding back on and her interest in Hugh and his in her…a few friends from the Wicked Dukes Club and their wives were called in to assist the couple find their HEA.
I loved Penelope and Hugh. Their relationship was one I could believe in. They stayed true to their beliefs and one another as they moved forward toward a love everlasting. Great ending to a marvelous series!
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
The final book in the Wicked Dukes Club gives us a sweet wrap-up to the series–if you’ve read the other series books, just wait for the final scenes 🙂
One Night has a fantastic opening–we’re thrown right into Pen’s desperate situation and are as grateful as she is that Hugh is in the right place at the right time to rescue her. Pen’s escape plan always seemed a bit iffy, though, which did make me wonder how on earth she’d manage to pull of an HEA for herself in the end.
Though I did enjoy their story, Hugh and Penelope’s story feels a bit more rushed than many of the other books in the series. On the whole, it’s very insta–insta-lust, insta-love, and insta-marriage. I do wish we’d had a bit more background for this one, especially for Penelope–though she tells us her relationship with her family is awful, we don’t really see it for ourselves until the last third or so of the book and never really get the true story behind why she is forced to turn to a woman she barely knows for help escaping her desperate situation. Still, Hugh is a worthy hero for her, and seeing them reach their HEA, even if it is pretty quickly done, is still satisfying.
Not my favorite in the series, but a worthy addition–especially for those final scenes!
Rating: 3 stars / C+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The unlikely hero and the forced debutant. After an unplanned rescue love blossoms. Darcy kept me wondering if Penelope would be willing to give up society to live as a rector’s wife. To have the hero be a rector with connections in high places is unexpected, but making me root stronger for him. By the end I was happy to see this new family come together and to know the true meaning of family. I received an advanced reader copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
Freedom! Now just to get to her friend in St Giles and she would escape the marrige to that awful man! But Lady Penelope Wakefield only found herself in a jam as two ruffians tried to kidnap her! But fate, or could it be devine intervention! steps in and Rector Hugh Tarleton steps in and rescues her. Ironically he knew the lads and could only try to set them back on the right path!
Hugh is one of the last in a group of friends who meet at The Wicked Duke tavern. Surprised to find the lady was Penelope that was being kidnapped, he took her to a nearby inn to sit and talk so he could find out what was happening. Hugh had such a compassionate heart and as she talked to him it seemed he sparked something within her…
Her goal was to make herself unmarriagble and look like she was ruined by staying away from home. Brilliant idea? Well maybe, but maybe not.
I adored this story. Penelope had not felt a lot of love during her life and as Hugh finds out, she is not the “typical” society peer. Those who can afford it most and barely giveto help the needy.
Hugh only wants to protect her and as they talk through the night and get to know each other there is a real connection.
Can these two ever come together? A Clergyman and a lady of society? Be prepared to fall in love with Hugh and hope that Penelope can get out of her arranged marriage. A perfect ending to this brilliant series that I have enjoyed through every sigh worthy hero and the women that grab their heart!!
I loved Hugh Tarleton, the rector of St. Giles.
Hugh rescues Lady Penelope from a scheme gone awry. Penelope is doing her best not to marry the father of her deceased intended (a horrible man).
Hugh is a great hero, and this is a great read.
Recommend. Who knew a rector could be so tempting?
Lady Penelope Wakefield has a kind heart and wants to marry for love even though she has seen little kindness or love in her home. Her father wants to marry her off to an odious old man (for his own benefit). To escape the marriage, she plans a pretend kidnapping complete with ransom notes, and plans to be gone just long enough to make her parents and the lecherous suitor think she is ruined. It seemed to be a sound plan, but it turns out to be a real kidnapping. She had trusted the wrong person. Fortunately, Hugh Tarleton comes upon the scene and rescues her. Hugh is a wonderful character. He disdains society and their superficial attempts to help the less fortunate. He is a caring man dedicated to his parishioners. They stay up most of that night getting to know each other. He treats Pen with the same protective care and delivers her safely home, but to what? After a bit of soul searching, Hugh decides that he wants to marry Pen. He needs a plan. Who should he go to for advice? He decides to get a little help from his friends (and their wives) at the Wicked Dukes Tavern. Before the plan plays out, there is a confrontation with Pen’s angry father and the Bishop. How does everything turn out? You have to see for yourself.
The Wicked Duke is a successful tavern owned by Caleb Sutton, the Duke of Colehaven and Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, the original Wicked Dukes. In One Night of Temptation we meet yet another charming, sigh-worthy patron, sadly the last of London’s most notorious tavern. Hugh and Pen have a lovely story. I enjoyed and happily recommend it. Each of the couples in these stories have learned about themselves and each other. They have found love and acceptance – family. As predicted, The Wicked Dukes Club is an awesome series by Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
ONE NIGHT OF TEMPTATION is the sixth and final instalment in the historical, romance WICKED DUKES CLUB series co-authored by Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley. ONE NIGHT OF TEMPTATION by Darcy Burke focuses on Rector Hugh Tarleton, and twenty-one year old Lady Penelope Wakefield, and can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Penelope and Hugh) ONE NIGHT OF TEMPTATION follows twenty-one year old Lady Penelope Wakefield, the daughter of the Marquess of Baber, as she devises as plan to escape a marriage to a man twice her age, a plan that goes afoul when her scheme to be kidnapped turns dangerous and real. Enter Rector Hugh Tarleton, the man who would rescue our heroine from uncertain fate, and the man with whom Penelope will fall in love. What ensues is the quick building relationship and love between Penelope and Hugh, and the potential fall-out as Penelope’s parents insist she marry the other man.
ONE NIGHT OF TEMPTATION is a quick read; a sexy, engaging and delightful historical romance that culminates in a marriage of love. The premise is enchanting: the characters are energetic and flirty; the romance is fun, fast and fabulous.
CAPTIVATING DELIGHT!!!
Wow! A spinning vortex of unexpected mishaps and a slew inadvertent events that launch those intense emotions bursting into play. One intriguing tale that hooks you from the start and reels you in for the duration. All the drama, uncertainty and suspense make for one enjoyable experience. The characters are strong and well developed with on point personalities that bend and flow. The scenes are vivid and breathtaking in the realistic true to life form. Twists and turns abound with unexpected surprises that brings this bad boy alive beautifully before your eyes. Fantastic job Darcy, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
Could not put it down! I absolutely adore Hugh and Penelope and had to finish their story in one sitting. This story has all the great elements I look for in a romance. It has great characters, a solid plot, and passion that begins slowly and burns deeply. Fabulous ending to a fabulous series!
This is a fast moving, sweet, (almost) love-at-first-sight romance between Lady Penelope and Hugh, the Rector. Nice plot, excellent dialogue, and great characters.
Awesome!! Another fantastic story in the Wicked Dukes series. Lady Penelope has no desire to marry especially a man twice her age. She makes a plan but it goes array. Hugh is a rector and tired of those in society that don’t help those in need. Society holds ones status as something you don’t ignore and expect the ladies to marry higher than their station. This held delightful characters, great storyline and I’m sad this series ends here. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Burke.
One Night of Temptation is the next book in the Wicked Dukes Club and is a historical romance whose main characters are of differing stations in society. With a domineering marquess for a father planning her engagement, Lady Penelope Wakefield decides to run away instead of marrying someone old enough to be her grandfather. She runs straight into the arms of kidnappers until the dashing rector, Hugh Tarleton, comes to the rescue. Determined that Penelope be ruined to avoid marriage, the duo stay in an inn over night where the lady tempts the do gooder Rector. Lady Penelope returns home to find nothing is changed and no one knows of her kidnapping. Hopeless in love and hopelessly mixed matched socially, Hugh and Penelope will resort to extreme measures to find a HEA. A love story that goes from acquaintances to hopelessly in love from 0 to 60, the sweet story moves fast and features the characters from the series in the peripheral. The Lady manages to tempt the Rector to set aside his morals for “One Night of Temptation” and causes my biggest dilemma in liking this story because the sainted Hugh seems to fall a little quickly into temptation. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
This story surprised me in the very best of ways. When it started off, I had no idea how it was going to get us where it looked like we were going. First off, we have our clergyman hero. All Thorn Birds references aside, I was a little concerned by the possibility of intimate encounters with a man of the cloth. The author handles the situation with a deft skill I can only admire. But this paled in comparison to the obstacles of our heroine’s parents, the fiancé her father wants her to marry, and the very large difference in the social stations between Penelope and Hugh. This was all handled with some delightfully clever plotting that brought all the previous books’ heroes and heroines back to play. What we get from this is the adorably sweet, yet still a little spicy, story of Penelope and Hugh overcoming the odds. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and I find I’m reluctant to say “goodbye” to these characters.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author through NetGalley.
