Oh Wow!
I loved this story so much that on finishing it, I immediately signed up for Darcy Burke’s Reader Club and newsletter. I didn’t even have to think about it.
This series, odd numbers by Erica Ridley and even numbers by Darcy Burke,
Is going to be a big hit – of that I am sure!
This particular book is a really quick read and by that I mean that it is so good that once I started I just had to finish it – never mind all the chores, shopping, washing and so on – I needed to find out each delicious morsel of this story right to the happy ending.
Seriously, if you miss this story, you might just kick yourself.
I requested and read an Advance Reader copy and am more than happy to recommend it. My voluntary review above is unbiased, or perhaps not (smile).
What happens when you have a man who walks away from the one woman he loved to have a tragic marriage to another and leaving this woman to marry a man she didn’t love. Val was a strong man not wanting to be a pretentious Duke and wanting to embrace all. Isabella an intelligent woman left destitute after her husband dies to end up in the same place. Darcy provided a wonderful dance between these characters as to who would take the lead and push the other to follow. Val and Isabella are a couple that needed to grow and come back together to know if it was always meant to be or not. I received an advanced reader copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
Can an affair of the past come back overwhelmingly and definitively?
It seems so, at least for Valentine and Isabelle.
They met at the time when Valentine, now the Duke of Eastleigh, was in Oxford. Isabelle was the daughter of one of the teachers, and although they had an irresistible attraction to each other, the romance had no future.
Ten years later, they meet again when Isabelle being the governess for his friend’s daughters, it was inevitable that they would talk, and again the feeling comes strong.
But now, Isabelle was no longer that naive girl, and she had saved money to finance a school for impoverished girls.
Valentine was not planning on getting married again after his first marriage had been a disaster. However, Isabelle was in his life again, and he would not let her go.
This is Book 2 of The Wicked Dukes series, which is the name of the tavern that good friends own, and plan to never fall in love and marry, but… you know what happens…
5 stars
I have been reading Darcy Burke for years and have enjoyed her books and this is another one that I will add to the list. This is part of a series, and this is the second book but can be read as a standalone even though I plan on reading the first book because I like to read all in the series. This is Isabelle and Val love story. These two meet as young ones when he is in College and Isabelle is around since her father works there but they will be forbidden since they are in different social standings. However you can’t stop love and these two have a night to remember but move on since again different social status. They both marry but always remember each other and years later they meet again but now will they get a chance of an HEA or continue to be forbidden? Grab a copy and find out..Enjoy!
Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinion
Very good story with good characters. Fell in love with Val, and Isabelle was his perfect mate. I received an ARC of this book. I received an ARC of this book.
ONE NIGHT OF SURRENDER is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series. Each will stand completely on its own, but why deny yourself any of these wonderful reads?
The chemistry between Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, and Isabelle Cortland, now a governess, was undeniable ten years ago. Fight it though they both do; it is undeniable again.
I thoroughly enjoyed their story as they each tried to respect society and as Val was a perfect gentleman and respected Isabelle’s request not relight the flames that were so obviously burning beneath the surface for both of them. More so, I loved Val’s interfering family. When you’re high enough up the ladder, you can through society’s book to the side and grab the love that is so obvious in front of you. I only hope his sister, Viola, will be one of the matches made in this series.
ONE NIGHT OF SURRENDER is the first book I have read from Darcy Burke. I want to thank Erica Ridley for introducing me to her. I think I have found a new favorite to add to my list of favorites.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

I loved this book! I got lost in the story & really enjoyed all of the characters. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
A highly entertaining, emotionally thrilling and action packed adventure filled with mystery, secrets and an undeniable passion …. this book hooked me from the very beginning and would not let go. Was a great read that had me breathless and longing for more. Loving these Wicked Dukes
After 10 years, the Duke of Eastleigh and Isabelle Cortland are reunited. I enjoyed following along as they struggled to find out if the passion they once shared could be rekindled.
One Night of Surrender is the second book in the Wicked Dukes club, but reads well as a stand alone. Isabelle has been a governess for the past five years, but now she’s headed to London with her young charges, and staying with none other than Duke Eastleigh, a man she had loved ten years ago. Val has dreamed of seeing Isabelle again, and now that she’s in his house, he wants her in his life, in any way that she’s willing. Isabelle has dreams of her own, but could love and surrender fit in her life?
I really enjoyed this book and romance between Val and Isabelle! There’s a lot that goes on within these pages, between fighting for her independence, a crazy amount of tension, wondering if love could be enough, and a bit of drama with family she helps care for. I absolutely loved all of the characters, and heading back to the Wicked Duke just felt a little bit like coming home. Isabelle thought she could only count on herself, had grand dreams of helping others, but could recognize how much she craved a connection to others. Val was so sweet, and even though he was a little thick headed at first in regards to getting married again, he only wanted to help those he loved. I adored the relationship he had with his sister, his grandmother was a little intimidating but still fun, and I loved how both ladies took Isabelle under their wing! I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more in this series!
I received a free, advanced copy of this book as a member of the author’s Review Crew. This is my unbiased and voluntary review. This second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series is about the second owner of the Wicked Dukes tavern, Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh. It is a second chance story.
Valentine and Isabelle had been friends (and one time with benefits) when Val was at Oxford, where Isabelle’s father was warden of Merton College. Ten years have passed. Both had married badly (because they didn’t marry each other). Val’s wife was a wanton, who had died in childbirth with another man’s child and Isabelle’s husband had left her in debt. Both have declared that they would never marry again.
Now Mrs. Isabelle Cortland, works for Lord Barkley and his wife as governess for their two daughters. A visit to London, has them staying at the home of Lord Barley’s friend the Duke of Eastley. Val is shocked when he sees Isabelle, but agrees to keep their acquaintance a secret, so she doesn’t loose her position. However, when Lady Barkley, out of jealousy, replaces her with another governess, all bets are off. It takes Val’s sister, Viola, and their grandmother to get the two to admit that they still love the other. But does Isabelle have it in her to be a duchess? Will we find out what Viola’s secret is in a future book?
Delightful characters, witty dialogue and an enticing plot make this book a fun read.
One Night of Surrender is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series written by Darcy Burke and Erica Ridley. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this series if you love historical romances filled with misbehaving Dukes and the only women that are strong enough to tame them.
In One Night to Surrender by Darcy Burke Val and Isabelle have a forbidden love affair that neither of them has ever forgotten and years later when circumstances out of their control bring them together again they are finding it challenging to not allow history repeat itself.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
They are two very stubborn people set on never marrying again, but fate has other plans for them. That spark was still there and hadn’t dulled in the past ten years. I loved that every time they tried to stay away from each other something would toss them together. Surrendering once wasn’t going to be enough for either of them. I loved how his sister and grandmother got involved and didn’t beat around the bush.
Isabelle loves her independence and isn’t going to let a sudden change make her relay on anyone. I loved that she wasn’t going to let anything stop and how educated she was.
Val knew they had something special all those years ago and knows he can’t let her go this time. I loved everything he did to make sure she was taken care of and that he knew it was her with his sister.
I hope his sister has a story coming soon because she was amazing and I wouldn’t mind seeing his grandmother again.

This is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club and even though it’s written by a different author, I enjoyed it as much as the first one. These two authors really are in sync with these stories. It’s a great partnership of like-minded writers.
Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, has suffered through a terrible first marriage and though his wife is dead, he has vowed never to marry again. He’s never forgotten his first love and often wonders what happened to Isabelle. When she turns up at his townhouse as a governess 10 years later, Val cannot believe it’s really her. He’s puzzled why she’s a governess now and hopes to find out more about her. Isabelle never forgot her first time ten years ago with Val. A widow herself now she resists every turn at a chance to renew their relationship.
I loved both these characters. Val was a honorable gentleman who was kind and considerate. Isabelle was a strong young woman who had learned the hard way not to trust anyone to take care of her. Suffering through a bad marriage herself, she has scrimped and saved to hopefully open a girl’s school. It takes them both quite a while to realize they have always loved each other. This is a short and easy read and I read it in one sitting. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
2nd in the Wicked duke series, flows on from the 1st, but works just as well as a standalone.
Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh, the co-owner of the Wicked Duke tavern with Cole, the Duke of Colehaven who he’d met at Oxford University, where he’d also met Isabelle, daughter of a warden there. They’d had one night of passion together before going their different ways into 2 disastrous marriages, Isabelle is widowed and penniless after her husband died, and has had to become a governess in order to survive, although she really wants to run a girls school, Valentine is now a determined bachelor after his flirty, unfaithful, first wife died.
Valentine invites a friend with his 2 daughters and governess to stay whilst their town house is readied for them, his wife following on when a sickly child is well again. Isabelle recognises Valentine immediately and tries to avoid him – unsuccessfully. When the wife joins her family in London, she bring a new governess for her daughters to replace Isabelle, as she is jealous of her, which Isabelle thinks is ridiculous until the father propositions her, and she knows she has to leave immediately, and find employment quickly so she can continue to save for her school. She finds herself taking a job at the Wicked Duke, as a stopgap and is found by Valentine.
Both the main characters are well written, it’s a lovely 2nd chance romance, and a great #2 in the series, like the first it has moments of joy and sadness and a lovely humour running through it. Well worth a read
This is the second book in a series that is being co-written by Erica Ridley and Darcey Burke. I love Erica Ridley’s books so I was excited to read this series.
Isabelle is a highly educated woman. He father was a warden (not the jailer kind ) at a school near Oxford. When she was younger, she met Val, the Duke of Eastleigh. He was attending Oxford at the time. They were attracted to one another and had a one night fling. Isabelle knew that even though she cared for Val deeply, she was not suitable to be his duchess. She also knew that she would be marrying a man that her father woukd choose for her.
Val was taken with Isabelle from the moment he saw her dressed like a boy, attempting to remain unnoticed so she could attend her father’s lecture. Val knows he will have to eventually marry but doesn’t plan to for years to come.
Years later, both of their spouses are dead. They meet up again when Isabelle’s employer asks his friend the Duke of Eastleigh, if he, his 2 daughters and their governess can stay with him until the townhome they have rented for the season is ready. The two find their attraction is stronger than ever but Isabelle is determined to avoid Val. This book is filled with characters from the first two books, who walk through or are mentioned in the subsequent books.
This book is definitely worth youre reading. It’s a feel good story with a HEA.
WOW!!!! Nobody does romance and second chance at love better than Darcy Burke!
Valentine Fairfax wasn’t lucky in his marriage, he’s endured his wife’s cheating ways for the longest time. Now he’s a widower and every so often wonders what life could have been like if he’d married the one that got away….. Isabelle Cortland. Imagine his surprise when he finds her in his townhouse governess to his freind Baron Barkley’s two daughters!
Isabelle Cortland has dreamt of putting aside enough to see her dream of opening a school for young girls, paying off her late husbands debts, she’s taken a post as a governess. What a shock to her to find the man she’s always loved but things get complicated before they realize that to walk away again would be the biggest mistake of their lives!
A delightful second chance at love, Val and Isabelle were more mature and wiser than ten years ago. After so much pain in their first marriages they truly deserved a happy ending, an emotional beautifully written story.
I recieved a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion .
One Night of Surrender by Darcy Burke is the second book in the Wicked Dukes Club series and was full of steamy chemistry and sexual tension! We head back to The Wicked Duke tavern and this time get Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh’s story. Almost ten years ago he had an unforgettable night with Isabelle Cortland, but after a disastrous marriage, he vows to never marry again.
When he is face-to-face with Isabelle again, he desires deeply. But Isabelle is not repeating past mistakes, no matter how much she wants him too. I loved the chemistry between Valentine and Isabelle. You could feel it coming off the pages. I loved this second chance romance! Though they attempted to stay away from the other, it was harder than either imagined! I am definitely loving this series and cannot wait for more!
Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog.
Happy reading!
Finally! We find out why Val is so moody! (Ok, it’s only been 1 book and 2 weeks of waiting, but stil… ;))
One Night of Surrender is a relatively low angst second chance romance. Val and Isabelle knew each other ten years earlier and had a great deal of flirting then and one night of passion. Fast forward to the present and they’ve each had a disastrous marriage and are widowed; he’s a duke but she’s a rather unconventional governess with dreams of opening her own school. They’re thrown together when Val opens his home to the family that Isabelle happens to work for, and of course the sparks fly almost immediately.
I liked both the main characters and felt they had decent chemistry and were easy to root for. Their conflict was pretty low key and a relatively easy solve, though–not a ton of drama here. Still, this was a quick, entertaining read that has me looking forward to future series books. (I can’t wait for Viola’s book–loved her!) If you haven’t read the first book in the series yet ( One Night for Seduction ) you should still do fine here, but do yourself a favor and read them all–they’re a great group of characters, and fairly short reads.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Book 2 of The Wicked Dukes Club.
Isabelle Cortland wants to be a headmistress of a girls school not a mistress to a Duke no matter how tempting. Valentine Fairfax, Duke of Eastleigh may have to remarry one day to continue his line but after a horrible first marriage to a women who didn’t know the meaning of fidelity he only want’s a mistress and his one forbidden night with Isabelle long ago has left him wanting more and now she’s under his roof and hill make ever effort to convince her that she will be his mistress. Valentine co-owns the Wicked Dukes Club he may know about business but he knows nothing about women like Isabelle hes used to the clinging money title hungry women of his station and women that are strictly for pleasure but Isabelle will challenge him and arouse his passion like know one else. This book has plenty of tension and passion that will keep you up all night trying to finish it and find out who will surrender first. I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
