Put up or shut upA year into Samantha True’s forensic photography classes she knows three things:1. Crime scenes are messy. 2. Especially when you throw up on them.3. She may not be cut out for this. When the police drag her to an investigation, she’s just as baffled by the scene. With clues like superhero masks, disco balls, and Bigfoot, are they ever going to find who did it? As she digs deeper … ever going to find who did it?
As she digs deeper into the photographic evidence, she realizes her small town is full of secrets. And she might be happier staying in the dark.
A laugh-out-loud mystery that will keep you guessing and quickly turning the pages. One Hit Wonder offers the just right reader escape, but fair warning, this book leaves readers wanting more.

I needed a book to listen to while recovering from COVID, so I picked up this short audio book. I won’t lie — I felt terrible for the MC who had to go to work while she had the flu! I could completely relate. 🙁
Sickness aside, it was a fun listen. It reminded me a bit of W. Bruce Cameron’s Repo Man series — some mystery and intrigue, but also some funny moments and nothing too serious (though the accident did turn out pretty bad). I could definitely see myself listening to or reading more books by this author. (I also appreciate how she cut off the f-bomb so it was true to the character but also kept the dialogue from being too R-rated).
Rated PG-13 for some violence.
The main character has recently finished a forensic photography class and is assigned to record a couple of mysteries. It had likable characters, good action, and an interesting small-town setting. I’ll try more. My biggest concern is that the MC went around with the flu for several days, including a visit to someone in the hospital!
Samantha True is called for a crime scene for the first time and she is bed with the flu. But she is determined to make a good impression and take the best picture a forensic photographer has ever taken. But is she ready to face THe ugliness in her new job? Will she solve the mystery and still be a happy person? A new and imperfect heroine. You will love Samantha True.
I loved this first book to Kristi’s new series! I enjoyed the friendship between Precious and Sam, and the banter between Sam and Leo. The mystery was engaging and kept me guessing until the end. I can’t wait for more!
I have enjoyed previous books by the author, so accepted an invitation for a free ARC. This is my unbiased and voluntary review. I’m not sure exactly how to classify the genre. The previous books were romance and this is not. What it is, is a humorous, laugh out loud, mystery (?) maybe.
Samantha True is dyslexic with a photographic memory, and decided to go for a forensic photography degree. But when she is called on for her first case as an intern, she is sick with the flu, which leads to vomiting on the crime scene. Things do not get much better, when she becomes suspicious of some of the people in the small town that she grew up in, a side product of being the daughter of the editor of the town paper. As she begins her own investigation, she begins to wonder whether this is really the career for her. The town is full of quirky characters and the reader even gets a lesson on how insurance works, car repairs and restoration. This was a fun read.
Samantha True, a forensic photographer with dyslexia, documents her first case.
The protagonist is relatable, interesting and self-deprecating. The plot held my interest, particularly with all the twists. And there’s plenty of humor in this clever story.
‘One Hit Wonder’ is an enjoyable cozy mystery.
One Hit Wonder is the first book in the Samantha True mystery series by Kristi Rose. I found it to be a quick, entertaining read. Samantha True is dyslexic and has a photographic memory. She’s studying to be a forensic photographer when she is called to her first crime scene. Of course, she’s dealing with a case of flu and throws up on the crime scene. From there she goes to a crime scene where the victim is a woman she’s known most of her life. Samantha begins asking questions and putting things together, ultimately coming up with an answer. An interesting first book in the series.
Despite having flu and a raging temperature Samantha drags herself out of bed to attend not one but two accident/crime scenes and then to go on to solve the mystery (mainly because she is in the right place at the right time). Samantha is very much an amateur detective (not really sure why people told her things – perhaps because she is well liked?) she cannot keep a secret to save her life and makes assumptions about people based on how they were at school. It was interesting to have a dyslexic character and I assume that this book sets up relationships between friends and family members that will continue into the series but I’m not sure that I’m invested enough to read any of them.
Great that this book had no obvious typos – kudos to her. I am soooo tired of reading stories where the author hasn’t proofread their book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book given away by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
One Hit Wonder
A Samantha True Mystery, Book 1
By: Kristi Rose
Narrated by: Jennifer Stoneking
Quirky, fun and mysterious, this cozy mystery gave me an afternoon of entertainment. Samantha Clue has the flu, but she isn’t’ going to let it stop her from documenting her first case. Camera in hand, she goes to the scene, unprepared for what she will see. And the mystery begins. Everyone wants information from her, including her father, a reporter! Fun banter between Sam and Leo, good friends, like Precious add to the dimensions of the story as well as a relevant issue Sam deals with everyday. This is a must listen if you enjoy easy listens, good characters and a small town mystery.
Narrated by Jennifer Stoneking, the pace is easy, the character voices distinct and easy to follow. I enjoyed her voices and will be watching for more from her.

This is the first book in A Samantha True Mystery. This short funny cozy mystery. The characters are interesting and well developed, and the storyline is original and intriguing. Jennifer Stoneking did a good job with the narration. Looking forward to listen to the next book in the Series, All Bets Are Off.
This was too much fun! One Hit Wonder has an amazing setting in the Pacific Northwest, quirky characters and laugh-out-loud hilarity. I loved this so much and can’t wait to read the next book.
