“One Good Dog is a wonderful novel: a moving, tender, and brilliantly crafted story about two fighters one a man, one a dog hoping to leave the fight behind, who ultimately find their salvation in each other. Susan Wilson’s clear and unflinching style is perfectly suited for her story that strips away the trappings and toys we all hide behind, and exposes our essential need to give and accept … to give and accept love in order to thrive.” Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain
Adam March is a self-made “Master of the Universe.” He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called. What no one knows is that Adam’s sister has been missing for decades. That she represents the excruciatingly painful past he has left behind. And that her absence has secretly tormented him all these years. When his assistant brushes off his request for an explanation in favor of her more pressing personal call, Adam loses it. And all hell breaks loose.
Adam is escorted from the building. He loses his job. He loses his wife. He loses the life he’s worked so hard to achieve. He doesn’t believe it is possible to sink any lower when he is assigned to work in a soup kitchen as a form of community service. But unbeknownst to Adam, this is where his life will intersect with Chance.
Chance is a mixed breed Pit Bull. He’s been born and raised to fight and seldom leaves the dirty basement where he is kept between fights. But Chance is not a victim or a monster. It is Chance’s unique spirit that helps him escape and puts him in the path of Adam.
What transpires is the story of one man, one dog, and how they save each other in ways they never could have expected.

What can one say about a book with a dog as one of the story tellers? I can not find the words, really, to describe why I loved this story. I simply did.
Not very often can a book bring me to tears.
One of the best reads I’ve had recently, but be warned: this one touches on the horror of pitbull fighting. The focus, however, is on the rehabilitation of one such abused dog through partnership with a man also battling his own demons. I loved it. The author portrayed a realistic recovery story, without dwelling on the stomach-turning details. A hard but wonderfully worthwhile read. Highly recommended.
Loved the book, so much went in the read the rest of the dog series
I really enjoyed One Good Dog and would recommend it to any dog lover. I especially like that the telling of the story switches between the dog and the man. There is good character development with an interesting story line. After finishing this book,I immediately bought the sequel, Two Good Dogs.
I absolutely loved this book. The characters including the dog just fabulous. Loved loved loved the story and the way it was told. Enjoy!
Loved this book so much that I got the sequel. The writer captures so much about how we think dogs relate to us.
A really good story about the relationship between a dog and a man.
iF you love dogs it will warm your heart and love them even more
I liked the book. I read for longer periods than I had intended. It had a satisfactory ending.
I loved this book.
I read this book long time ago, maybe even 10 years ago. I recommended it to a friend of mine who, at that time, had a Pit Bull. She loved that dog and I thought she might enjoy reading the book. I’m not sure she got it from the Library though.
After this book was on my Bookbub, I sent her a new email recently telling her, “This is the book I recommended to you.”
A great read for any dog lover!
I would suggest this book for all those who enjoy a beautiful story with a wonderful ending.
I absolutely loved this book. It’s been weeks since I finished it, and still find myself thinking of Chance and his person, Adam. How the author seemingly gets into the mind of the dog and the wishes all dog owners have for a relationship with their dog is brilliant, artistic, and fun. It’s just the most enjoyable book I’ve read in a long time!
Too depressing for me to finish.
The main character failed to elicit my sympathy. He was just another rich jerk. Yes, he got slapped by karma but I didn’t want to read anymore about his redemption, because on the way more good dogs died.
And I just can’t let animal suffering in my mind. Just. Can’t. Do. It.
It replays and replays and I never forget it.
I’m guessing there’s a happy ending. Good.
I couldn’t hang around for it.
I absoulutly love this book. I read it by accident and yet now i recommend it. Its that good.
Really enjoyed this book, I am a dog lover, so can relate to that part but also enjoyed the personal journey of main character.
Loved this book. I love dogs but never liked pit bulls. It was great to read a story about a pit bull that was not aggressive but lovable. Adam really changed after having this dog in his life.
Unforgettable!
