“One Good Dog is a wonderful novel: a moving, tender, and brilliantly crafted story about two fighters one a man, one a dog hoping to leave the fight behind, who ultimately find their salvation in each other. Susan Wilson’s clear and unflinching style is perfectly suited for her story that strips away the trappings and toys we all hide behind, and exposes our essential need to give and accept … to give and accept love in order to thrive.” Garth Stein, New York Times bestselling author of The Art of Racing in the Rain
Adam March is a self-made “Master of the Universe.” He has it all: the beautiful wife, the high-powered job, the glittering circle of friends. But there is a price to be paid for all these trappings, and the pressure is mounting until the day Adam makes a fatal mistake. His assistant leaves him a message with three words: your sister called. What no one knows is that Adam’s sister has been missing for decades. That she represents the excruciatingly painful past he has left behind. And that her absence has secretly tormented him all these years. When his assistant brushes off his request for an explanation in favor of her more pressing personal call, Adam loses it. And all hell breaks loose.
Adam is escorted from the building. He loses his job. He loses his wife. He loses the life he’s worked so hard to achieve. He doesn’t believe it is possible to sink any lower when he is assigned to work in a soup kitchen as a form of community service. But unbeknownst to Adam, this is where his life will intersect with Chance.
Chance is a mixed breed Pit Bull. He’s been born and raised to fight and seldom leaves the dirty basement where he is kept between fights. But Chance is not a victim or a monster. It is Chance’s unique spirit that helps him escape and puts him in the path of Adam.
What transpires is the story of one man, one dog, and how they save each other in ways they never could have expected.

Adam March had a hard life growing up and was just driven to succeed at the expense of his wife and daughter. Adam finds himself alone, unemployed, and is court appointed to working in a homeless shelter. Then he meets a dog and both Adam and the dog’s life are changed. I love stories about dogs and horses and if you also love animals you will love this.
A very touching story about an unhappy man who takes in a street – fighter dog. Together they learn how to live happily together.
I love this book! As a matter of fact I’ve reread it a few times now. Written from both the human & canine perspective, it gives the reader a well rounded experience. I’m surprised it hadn’t been picked up to be adapted into a movie. Read it you won’t be disappointed.
Love books about dogs!!
This was a wonderful story, cleverly written and very touching. It could easily have been a 4/5 star book had it not been for the crude, coarse language used throughout. It ruined the story which could easily have been told without it.
I loved this book!
Boring.
I loved it!
I read this in one sitting, so I suppose I can say I enjoyed it. This is a hard subject to deal with when it comes to the dogs. But he finds love with a new human.
they saved each other:)
I really enjoyed this book. Not only does it bring awareness to such an awful life for dogs that are pitted against each other, but it also lets you know what wonderful animals these poor babies can be if treated like they should be. Pretty good example of having it all and how it can all be gone in an instant.
I loved this book.
I shared this with my son who has a dog on it’s last legs.
We both felt the emotion with in the pages.
This is a good read as it looks inside both, the dogs mind and the humans.
I loved this book.
At first, I wasn’t too sure that I would like It, because I really didn’t like Adam March very much. But after his downfall, he really shaped up.
Normally, I don’t like books where the animals speak to me, but this was so important that Chance had his say. He explained what a street dog’s life was like and he made such a drastic change to a pet dog.
Pit bull-type dogs get such a bad rap – and this book presents a realistic image of how Chance was given, well, a chance.
I read some of the other reviews and I agree that this book made my laugh, cry, and really care about all of the characters.
Adam has a horrible childhood but manages to rise to the top in the corporate world. He has a wife and daughter and seems to have everything. But one day he snaps and loses it all. He ends up doing community service and crosses paths with a mixed breed Pit Bull. The dog has been used to fight but escapes. Part of the time the story is told by Adam and part of the time by the dog. It shows what wonderful dogs this breed can be, exposes the horrors of dog fighting and how both man and dog can overcome challenges. There is some profanity.
A writer who knows dogs and men well. Also redemption from the fast lane.
I enjoyed this book, a lot.
This book had me on an emotional roller coaster. I laughed; I cried. I seriously could not put the book down and finished it in two days!
Loved it. A wonderful ride.
I wasn’t sure quite what to expect from this one — I was just in the mood to be in the company of a good dog — but it was very, very good. The dog in the story is so beautifully rendered. I’ll read this again.
Former titan of industry and self-made man Adam March is brought low by a court-mandated community service sentence in a men’s homeless shelter and consigned to a third floor walkup. Adam was having the classic “bad day” when he lost it and slapped his PA. So the sentencing judge thinks Adam needs a lesson in humility. Needs to lose the arrogant attitude. All this while his soon-to-be ex-wife continues in her lavish lifestyle, draining what little is left of his liquid assets. During his stint at the soup kitchen Adam unwillingly acquires a dog. Not just a dog but a Pit Bull mix who was raised and trained to fight. Chance bears the marks and scars of a fighter because that was his job in his former life but he’s not a mean dog regardless of his looks. As they’re thrown together Chance and Adam are merely cohabiting but they slowly develop a mutual respect, each learning to trust the other and a deep bond between man and dog begins to form. In “One Good Dog” author Susan Wilson has gifted us with a heartwarming story of hope and redemption. The narrative is delivered by the voices of Adam and Chance. If you’ve ever wondered how your dog would sound if he could speak as we do, you need wonder no more. Susan Wilson has the dog’s POV down pat. Don’t get me wrong. This is not a comedy but the running commentary from the dog’s perspective is enlightening and definitely offers some of the lighter moments as well as some of the darkest. All the elements of a well told story are here; original plot, intriguing dialogue and characters you can believe in. A worthwhile read for sure.
