Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie’s opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. She’s a product of the “burg,” a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God … clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six.
Now Stephanie’s all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad’s, doing her best to sever the world’s longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case.
Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, fearless bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook.
Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli is also the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie’s virginity at age sixteen and then wrote the details on the bathroom wall of Mario’s Sub Shop. There’s still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase should be interesting.
It could also be extremely dangerous, especially when Stephanie encounters a heavyweight title contender who likes to play rough. Benito Ramirez is known for his brutality to women. At the very least, his obsession with Stephanie complicates her manhunt and brings terror and uncertainty into her life. At worst, it could lead to murder.
Witty, fresh, and full of surprises, One for the Money is among the most eagerly awaited crime novels of the season.
more
kind of silly
I was hooked after reading this book – have read the whole series. I agree with others, in that once you get towards the end of the series, the story lines become a bit repetitive. Each book stands on its own, but it is so much more fun to read them in the order written. If you want a “FUN” and easy read, try it!
I loved the first 10 or so, but then it got repetative. But having said that the ones I did read we laugh out loud funny.
The series gets better and better
I started the series by reading this one aloud to my husband in the car and we both enjoyed it and most of the others that came along. They take place on the Reservation near where I used to live and give a lot of good history along with a pretty good story.
Although most of her books are predictable, they are worth the read.
Hysterical and gripping. I haven’t missed a Stephanie Plum mystery yet.
Stephanie Plum is one of the most enjoyable heroines I’ve encountered in years. Evanovich can make any situation funny -no scratch that- can make any situation hilarious.
What a deliciously fun summer read. I enjoyed a number of her books until one day, I didn’t. The old gal just became too long of tooth. But the first ten or twelve were great fun!
Great series!!!
This is a series. The stories are ok. But the use of crude language is too much for me. If you don’t mind the language the story line is pretty good.
The beginning of a wacky, witty and very interesting series about a very diverse group of people a female skip chaser is involved with. Every one just gets better!
This book has laugh-out-loud moments and hide-your-face moments. It’s a fun page Turner with so many great elements. The characters are well developed, the story goes somewhere, and Stephanie Plum could be a real person. I love this series.
Really loved the 1st seven books and kept up till 11 but the heroine never really advanced and what used to be funny became – not again, she can’t still be that dumb, and pick one. But in the beginning so funny, great characters and a very good time.
This is the story of Stephanie Plum – she has money problems, so she turns to her family for help. She starts working for her cousin who owns a bail bonds company. She talks her cousin into letting her take a bail recovery job of a person who is running from a Murder One charge, so she can earn $10,000. The criminal ends up being someone she slept with when she was in high school – Joe Morelli. Other characters join the chase, and Stephanie realizes she is in over her head.
This book was pretty good. It was funny and kept me interested. It is quick, light reading, so that made it enjoyable. There was humor and romance, but the plot did fall short. But not to the point that I didn’t want to finish the book.
Please understand that Janet Evanovich isn’t going to win any awards, but her book s are laugh-out-loud funny. I like to read them in order, but honestly, they can stand alone. She is a favorite of mine because I will always laugh and sometimes I’ve cried.
DO NOT WATCH THE PIECE OF SHIT MOVIE!!!
I don’t know how else to say it. A very good defective detective read. Witty, humorous good characters.
Highly recommend the entire series.
Hilarious
I love this series. Stephanie’s whole family is hilarious, especially Grandma Mazur. The antics of the characters had me laughing like crazy. I definitely recommend this first book in the series.
This character is always funny.
