Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie’s opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. She’s a product of the “burg,” a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God … clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six.
Now Stephanie’s all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad’s, doing her best to sever the world’s longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case.
Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, fearless bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook.
Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli is also the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie’s virginity at age sixteen and then wrote the details on the bathroom wall of Mario’s Sub Shop. There’s still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase should be interesting.
It could also be extremely dangerous, especially when Stephanie encounters a heavyweight title contender who likes to play rough. Benito Ramirez is known for his brutality to women. At the very least, his obsession with Stephanie complicates her manhunt and brings terror and uncertainty into her life. At worst, it could lead to murder.
Witty, fresh, and full of surprises, One for the Money is among the most eagerly awaited crime novels of the season.

Need a fun read? Count on Janet Evanovich to sweep you away for a little skip tracing and bounty hunting! This long-running, beloved series kicks off with a bang, and a host of colorful characters that you’ll fall in love with in One for the Money This first in series is where Stephanie Plum’s ill-starred but somehow successful career in bounty hunting begins!
I gobbled through many of these books, starting with this one, but eventually became frustrated that Plum never really changes or resolves her romantic, personal or professional life…I like a character to evolve!
That said, there’s something comforting about knowing that every time you pick up one of these books, you’ll have a chuckle and spend time with beloved characters.
An absolute hoot! Whenever I need a laugh, I know that Stephanie Plum is there. Wonderfully written, great characters, and just a lot of fun.
When I need a quick read that makes me laugh, this is my go to series. Janet Evanovich has such a dry and quirky sense of humor. I mean, how could you not find an inept bounty hunter with two hot guys watching out for her partnered up with a hungry, ex-prostitute and a slightly crazy grandmother living vicariously through them funny? The mysteries have enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, and there is always a little bit of romance involved. I’ve read all of the books in the series so far (some more than once) and always enjoy them! So, if you are in the mood for a light mystery, give this series a try – and I would start with the first one!
I’ve read all of the books in the Stephanie Plum series. Love them all so I’m leaving the review for book 1. A must read!
Okay–I realize I’m late getting to this party – but I am SO glad I finally arrived! I picked up “One for the Money” after a friend raved about how entertaining this series was. Since that day I have plowed through the first 12 books in the series and have the rest on que. I cannot get enough. I have even started reading other books in between in my feeble attempt to prolong catching up in the series and not having a new book to reach for!
Seriously – this is just pure fun! Highly recommended for this stressful time of year!
What a fun book! This is my go-to re-read whenever I’m in the mood for a laugh. Stephanie Plum rocks!
Picked up the first for no reason I can think of, and was I happy. I couldn’t wait for more, and they came. Along with some other characters that have their own series. Every book that I have read leaves me rolling in laughter and can’t wait to reaed the whole thing and then sorry it’s over. But, I do sort of get a queasy feeling around donuts and fried chicken.
Answering the question “What book made you laugh out loud?” This is the first in the series about Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter. This series was recommended to me as a “laugh out loud”, but I was sceptical. I just finished book 23 and must admit I have laughed out loud reading each book. The characters themselves are funny, from Stephanie and her family, her sidekick Lula, an ex “ho”, and the 2 hot men in her life. Each book has a mystery, but what you will remember are the crazy antics of each colorful character.
This is a wonderful, funny, fresh series. Love Stephanie!!!
If you like to laugh, you will love this series. I have actually laughed out loud while reading these books. This is the first book in the series starring Stephanie Plum. Stephanie has trouble holding a job. She blackmails her Bondsman cousin, Vinney, to give her a job as a bounty hunter. Hilarity ensues. Stephanie has an on again off again relationship with cop Joe Morrelli. To further complicate her life she has a wild attraction with fellow bounty hunter Ranger. Ranger and Joe find out quickly it is a full time job keeping Stephanie out of trouble and alive. . .
My librarian, Sue recommend this series to me and she was right I loved it! Funny, action packed, a little predictable (I knew Joe was innocent in the first chapter) but still worth the time it took to read. I LOVED Stephanie’s grandma the most and if she wants to wear spandex shorts I’m not going to judge
Looking for a light hearted read? This is it! Grabs you from the beginning and keeps you on the ride to the very end. Loved loved loved the adventures and comical situations the main character (Stephanie Plum) faced.
I can’t think of the last book that made me laugh out loud but this was probably the first one. It was out of my usual genre at the time and I fell in love with Stephanie Plum so much that I continued to read the next 19 books. Haven’t read any in a while and I still don’t know which man she chose, Joe, her Vice-cop “boyfriend” or Ranger, her fellow bounty hunter with a hard edge. Maybe it’s time to get back to her and find out what I’ve missed these last few years.
If you haven’t read Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series and you’re looking for a less than serious read, One for the Money is for you. Not only is the main character hilarious , all of the characters are priceless. From her overbearing mother to her crazy grandmother. And the male characters are
hot! Stephanie Plum is unemployed and needs to pay her rent so she takes a job working for her cousin who is in the bail bonds business. Oh and she’s a street smart brunette from Trenton! You will have tears from laughing so hard. Enjoy!
I admit that I stopped reading this series somewhere between 9 and 12. Or I read 12, but not 10. BUT. This remains one of the funniest, happiest, zaniest series I’ve ever read. Loved the characters, loved the escape. Worth a lot for anyone who needs a laugh or a little fun.
Love Stephiane Plum waiting on 25
Easy read, well written and witty
Stephanie is sassy, independent and amusing while she struggles to make her way. Secondary characters are quirky and amusing, that allows for an easy read.
Definitely not a recent read but laugh out loud makes me think of the Stephanie Plum series especially the first ones. Improbable characters who are so much fun and always elicit loud guffaws. Begin at the beginning.
Do you love slap stick, laugh out loud comedy, well written plots with a little light romance? Then the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich is your cup of tea. Fortunately, the order of the series is easy… One for the Money is followed by Two for the Dough, and there are 23 books to date.
The books are set in Trenton, NJ where Stephanie works for Vinnie, a family member, who is a bail bondsman. She gets paid for capturing each individual who has been bonded and failed to show up for their court hearing. Her family (Mom and Dad, maternal grandmother -whose idea of a great date is to go to the funeral home for visitations, looking for an available man-), two romantic interests (Joe Morelli and Ranger), as well as her partner in retrieving the court no shows- Lulu, a “former” street walker, appear in each book and you soon feel like you know each one. It is important for the character and relationship development to read the series in order, but all of the books are still in print.
I have laughed so much reading this series. I really enjoy entering Ms. Plum’s world, and am sorry to leave it at the end of each book. Fortunately, Hardcore Twenty Four is coming out in November, 2017.
