A chilling psychological thriller by a million-copy bestselling author.Who really killed Maisie Earnshaw?Within the walls of the high-security psychiatric facility, Crowmont Hospital, reside many violent offenders. To nurse Leah Smith, no matter what, all offenders are patients first and foremost. When Leah is appointed as a nurse to Isabel Fielding, she is determined to remain professional … nurse to Isabel Fielding, she is determined to remain professional despite the shocking crime Isabel allegedly committed in her past.
Years ago, six-year-old Maisie Earnshaw was found face down in a duck pond, her body mutilated. Isabel–at age fourteen, found covered in Maisie’s blood–was convicted of murder.
As Leah spends time with Isabel, she comes to know her as a young woman with a sweet, gentle nature, someone she could never see as a murderer. Leah begins to suspect members of the Fielding family of framing Isabel as a young girl, and she’s not the only one. True crime blogger James Gorden thinks Isabel is innocent too.
Is Leah allowing her own dark past to taint her judgement as she grows closer to her patient? Or has a young woman been unjustly robbed of her childhood?
Praise for the Isabel Fielding series:
“I can’t praise this book enough…it was one of the best books I’ve read this year!”
“Without giving too much away the characters had me fooled! Nothing is what it seems, you need to keep reading … just one more chapter…”
“One For Sorrow is such a fabulously dark and twisted read. I knew from the opening pages it was going to be good but by heck I didn’t forsee the twists and turns as they happened. It’s one of those stories that you will be constantly second-guessing and jumping at conclusions only to be totally wrong.”
“This dark, twisty psychological thriller was totally riveting.”

One of those books that take you on a rollercoaster of mystery and thrills… and then punches you in the face! I haven’t been this surprised by a book in a long time.
A deliciously dark, creepy and twisted read! From the theme of birds throughout, to the creepy setting of a psychiatric hospital to the unreliable narrator, this book ticked so many boxes. Another fantastic, creepy, character-driven thriller from Denzil!
What a story! Wonderful book. Felt so much for the characters, even the twisted ones! Surpises all along.
It started out a bit wordy, but settled into an easy to read story. Although I thought it was not original, the slight difference in the antagonist was a good thing. I wish the book had stopped with the one story, not starting a series hoping to be made into a movie.
Survival, mental illness, no matter what you do, even trained professionals can be fooled by psychopaths. Lot of twists and turns you don’t see coming. Enjoyed it, even though I found myself saying “why would you do that”many times.
Started & didn’t like…
As a lifelong healthcare professional, I cannot enjoy a book where the protagonist is a nurse who violates every commonly held privacy and safety principle in the quest for “truth.” Nurse Leah is an arrogant dope. She works in a high security facility for convicted sociopaths. I confess I was irritated and bored halfway through and declined to finish the book. However, because this is first in a series, I suspect Leah survives her mischief and her patient is exonerated.
This is a book that might keep you up at night.
Loved it!
I thought this book was well written. I will read more from this author including the sequel to this book.
Pretty good characters and story line.
a whole cast of flawed characters, so I guess in this day and age that’s more realistic than not. I prefer books where I can relate to one of the characters, and I could not in this case. It still made for an ok read, but dampened my enthusiasm somewhat.
Reading One For Sorrow by Sarah A. Denzil is like getting into the mind of a deeply conflicted, mental patient who must still function in society. Leah Smith is a tragic character whose need to help others while fighting her demons is heartbreaking. When she starts a new job at Crowmont Hospital and is put in charge of a troubled girl named Isabel, who may or may not be a murderer, the road to sorrow is perfectly paved.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers with characters who ring true like notes on a piano, I suggest you grab this book. Oh, and one other thing. Beware of magpies.
Definite twists.
Loved this book. Waiting on third one
Totally didnt expect this book to go the way it did!! What a page turner! I cant wait to get the next in the series!! The characters are great! the story line is captivating! The scenery is like you are there! Awesome book!
Well written
Had me wondering, didn’t expect the ending. Couldn’t wait to read the next book!
Good start to a series.
I was saddened by the twists revealed at the end.
Can you say totally twisted and unpredictable? This is one of the best books I read all year. At the onset this is an adrenaline producing and psychologically gripping piece of work. The characters although different in so many aspects from many crime novels make this unbelievable novel totally believable. I am looking forward to reading more by Sarah A. Denzil.
