The third book in the USA Today bestselling Carly Moore series by Denise Grover Swank.
The dead can’t speak
After months of living in the Smoky Mountains town of Drum, Tennessee, Carly knows firsthand the financial hardship the citizens face. Still, she can’t muster the same excitement as everyone else when town patriarch Bart Drummond breaks ground on his new resort that promises more jobs and … his new resort that promises more jobs and money.
But the project comes to a screeching halt when the construction crew unearths a grisly discovery—an unmarked grave. The discovery threatens Carly’s ex-boyfriend, when the authorities learn the body belongs to his old girlfriend who had supposedly left town…and Wyatt is suspect number one.
Carly’s sure Wyatt’s innocent, even if the rest of the town, and more importantly, the sheriff’s department, is ready to lock him up. Carly has moved on from Wyatt, but now he’s asking for her help to clear his name. In exchange, he’ll tell her what he knows about his father. Information that will help her bring Bart down.
But danger lurks around every corner, and as Carly puts her life on the line to help the man who betrayed her, she begins to question everything and everyone around her…especially Wyatt Drummond.

I’m absolutely loving this series! The deeper I read into Carly’s world, the more it’s starting to feel like home. One Foot in the Grave is a fantastic story with an even better mystery that begins when a body is dug up at the construction site of Bart Drummond’s new resort. Wyatt asks Carly for help in order to clear his name as the main suspect in this new murder case. Drummond family secrets are uncovered, and we gain new insight through the eyes of Emily, while Carly gathers information to help bring down Bart. Carly starts to stand up for herself, gains a new found confidence, and is a force to be reckoned with. This series is evolving into something so special, and each book is always full of action, dark secrets, and amazing character growth and development!
One Foot in the Grave is phenomenal! There was a lot of intense and edge of your seat moments throughout the story. I think that Denise did an amazing job with this book, as she kept me guessing up until the very end. I really enjoyed being back in Carly’s world and seeing her with people who love and care for her. I love the relationships and connections Carly has with the people in town (like Hank, Ruth, Max, and Marco). They all have always been protective of her since book one and seeing how they treat her as their own makes my heart so happy. She definitely needs a family like this after what she has been through.
Carly is such a strong and independent female lead. She cares for her friends and will do what she can to help them in sticky situations.. even for Wyatt. She may not have the same feelings that she once had for him, but when he needs help clearing his name, she is willing to help. I am interested in seeing where Denise takes this series, especially the relationship between Marco and Carly.
Another amazing DGS book! Carly is just amazing and she is so intelligent. I love how every emotion she goes through, you can just feel. There’s so many layers and so many twists and turns that you can’t put it down because you might miss something. This book was such a nail biter and I definitely did not guess the ending. If you want an amazing book that just captivates you, definitely read this series
What a wonderful book!! This is the 3rd book in the Carly Moore series. We are back in drum a few months after book 2 ended. Of course Carly is asked to help Wyatt out of a sticky situation.
Denise has a way of drawing you into her books and before you know it the book is done. This is an amazing book, and I can not wait for the next book to see what else Carly can get into.
Carly is almost like Rose but amazing in her own way. I seriously love this series and cannot wait for more. This book dives into the characters more and makes you love and hate some more than before. Carly loves investigating and helping others who have been wronged or mistreated. I cant get enough.
These Carly books keep getting better with each installment! In the new book, Drum is getting a new resort! Until some bones are found on Drummond land. Wyatt could be held responsible for the bones unless Carly helps clear his name. She needs to do it while keeping Bart Drummond off her back and trying to keep herself, Marco, Wyatt, Hank and Max safe. I love all the characters in Drum and Carly. I hope we continue to get more books in the series because as I said each book keeps getting better.
I say this every time, but I have no clue how Denise continues to write a better story every time!
In this 3rd installment of the Carly Moore series, Carly is still in Drum, Tennessee trying to figure out how to take down Bart Drummond and hopefully her own father as well.
In addition to all of this, she now has to help clear Wyatt’s name as a potential murder suspect. It was one thing to have to work with her ex, but how is Carly supposed to navigate this one? Don’t worry…Denise has answers.
I love Carly’s series. Carly loves with her whole heart and knowing how close she gets to everyone in Drum is both inspiring and heartbreaking. Carly’s relationships with Ruth, Max, Wyatt, and Hank make the story what it is. Plus, I definitely started shipping Carly and Marco right around the 2nd chapter.
Talk about a page turner! This book has everything you could ever want…drama, mystery, romance and so much more. Carly is an amazing woman who is dealing with so much. Even with a broken heart she still wants to do right by the people in her life. She has great instincts and knows how to solve a mystery. This book sucks you in and makes you feel all sorts of different emotions. I could not read this book fast enough to find out how everything unfolded. This book gave us more detail into some of the other characters lives, both bad and good. I am anxious to read more about Carly’s journey in the next book! I highly recommend this book!
Denise Grover Swank has done it again!!!
With another great series that you can’t put down. This is book #3 and is as good as ever.
This book gets straight into it, Maxs tavern is busy as ever with the small town of Drum flooded with construction workers building the new Resort, until work gets shut down for a period of time as they stumble upon human bones. Which turn out to be Wyatts (Carlys ex) ex girlfriend from years ago. Everyone in the town thought she had took off out of town after she broke up with Wyatt making him the main suspect.
This book is full on with Carly going into investigating mode trying to help Wyatt. She puts herself as risk so many times, with no idea who was behind it. The last half of the book is hard to put down as it’s so gripping.
I love how far Carly has come, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
I want more already! I can not get enough of the mysteries that are in all of DGS’s books and this one was packed full of them. This small town is full of dangerous people that can change Carly’s life in a heartbeat. She has grown closer to some like Marco and Hank and build walls up to keep her heart safe from others. She has become such a bold woman that I just adore how she stands up and does what she needs to for others…even if it is her ex. When a body is found on a construction site, Wyatt is believed to be the reason it is there. Carly goes above and beyond to prove he isn’t the killer. Her journey isn’t easy when people don’t want to give up their secrets. But she finds ways to get the truth and it made for a fantastic story!
One Foot in the Grave is the third book in the Carly Moore series and this series is quickly becoming my favorite from Denise Grover Swank. That is definitely saying a lot given how many different series I enjoy reading from this author. I absolutely love Carly and I can relate to her in many ways. I love seeing her become a stronger woman throughout this series and figuring out all of her feelings about her life. I enjoy reading about all of the characters in this book, even the less likable ones, because they are all different, imperfect, and complex. All of the characters have their own secrets that are slowly coming out and I love learning more about everyone in this series.
The book was unpredictable and there were many surprises throughout. Just when I would assume I figured something out, I was wrong. I love books that can keep me guessing until the very end. I am glad we are finally getting to know more about Wyatt and his history with his ex-girlfriend, Heather, whose body was found at the construction site. She seems like an interesting person who definitely had her share of flaws. I also liked learning more about Marco, Max, and the other Drummond family members. I also love the father-daughter relationship that Carly has developed with Hank. It is heartwarming to read and I love how they accept and love each other completely. I feel like I cannot write too much without giving spoilers, so I will just say that this book is definitely worth reading. It is well written with a interesting plot and it will keep you hooked, wanting to find out the truth of what happened to Heather.
This is book number 3 and we see dive headlong into another mystery and Carly being really open with her questions and getting herself into bother, however, we see more and more the development of herself and the consequences it will have if she goes ahead with her enquiries. In this book we see Carly being asked to help clear someone’s name as they know she will find the truth and won’t back out of it. Her relationship with Marco is causing everyone to second guess what is going on and even Carly herself.
I really think in this book Carly is becoming more and more accepted into the community and no longer an outsider, I think this shows the true character of Carly and how loved she really is amongst her friends and even strangers!
I loved catching up with Carly, Hank, Ruth, Wyatt, Max, & Marco In this latest installment of her story. Despite conflicting emotions for Wyatt, she knows he can’t possibly have been responsible for the death of his girlfriend nine years ago, so when he asks Carly to clear his name, she doesn’t hesitate long before she agrees to help him.
With her usual spunk and determination, Carly leaves no stone unturned, making some new friends, and some new enemies, along the way. The story grabbed me from page one, and moved at a good pace. I loved seeing Carly reclaim an aspect of her former life as Caroline that she thought she had lost for good, and I appreciated that she is taking the time to really make romantic decisions that are in her own best interests- even though it is painful. I felt like I got a good handle on what really motivates Carly, and what makes her happy deep down in her soul in this book. She is definitely a lovable heroine, and I just can’t help rooting for her to get her happily ever after.
I have to be honest, when I see that Denise Grover Swank is going to be writing a new book I don’t even look up to see what it is about because I KNOW that it’s going to be a five-star book. One Foot in the Grave is no exception! I fell in love with Carly when she was a part of the Rose Gardner series. I ADORE her and that her storyline has evolved into an incredible spinoff series. She’s a woman that has been through so much but has remained a good person and stays true to herself. I just love her!
DGS writes with such a flair that it really feels like you’re catching up with old friends and it is so easy to transport yourself into the worlds that she creates. Let’s hear it for the older characters: Roberta and Gladys are hilarious and Hank’s relationship with Carly is so sweet. And, I love the love triangle between Marco, Wyatt, and Carly.
Terrific mystery, fantastic characters, and a great plot and setting all make for a phenomenal read! Five stars!!
This is the third book in the Carly Moore series. Time line wise, taking place a few months after the events of the second book. So far, this may be my favorite of the series. It has an overall feel closer to the first book that I enjoyed much more than book two.
The plot moves effortlessly and provides much needed answers as to what really happened to cause the riff between Wyatt and his family. Carly does continue to poke her nose into all sorts of things, but she goes about it in a smarter way this time around. Little hints are dropped that there may be more going on in Drum than Carly realized. Perhaps even things that Wyatt has tried to protect her from.
I was happy to have more of Wyatt in this book and I think Carly is starting to realize that he has kept secretes for a reason. Marco has become even more of a fixture in Carly’s life and is edging to have more with her. I enjoyed the dynamic between Carly and Marco, even if I don’t want him as a love interest. It was also good to have a revisit with Hank, Max, Lula, Bingham & Ruth.
I look forward to see how Carly’s story will progress in the next book.
Another page turner from Denise Grover Swank! I love Carly, Marco, Hank, and friends in Drum. Since Carly came to town she seems to fit right in. Wyatt has asked Carly to investigate and clear his name after bones are found. Even with their past, Carly sees the opportunity to learn more of the town’s secrets. There is a lot of mystery and suspense. I wasn’t sure who was responsible for the bones until the end. I love how Carly is forming friendships and relationships with so many in town. I laughed out loud reading the scene from the nursing home. I saw the good in Carly’s heart when she bought the tulips. And I loved the scene with Carly, Hank, and the kittens! I can’t wait to see what secret Carly discovers next!!
The mystery and suspense are fantastic! Carly is a smart, brave and tenacious character. Her sense of morality and big heart make for such a likeable person. I had so many theories about what I thought may have happened in this story. I hope to see if some of my long game theories will come to pass in future books. I hope this series continues with many more books. In my opinion this is Denise Grover Swank’s best mystery series.
Every Carly book just gets better and better. The mysteries are complex and the characters are rich. In this installment, Carly’s ex-boyfriend, Wyatt, is accused of murdering his former girlfriend, Heather, who disappeared nine years ago. Wyatt asks Carly for help in clearing his name, and she agrees to help him because she thinks he is innocent—but also because she just can’t resist a good mystery. Like all good DGS books, however, things are never as they seem, and the pace is terrific. There was never a dull moment. And though this book wraps up the mystery of Heather’s death, there are still so many things we don’t know about Bart Drummond and what he wants from Carly, not to mention the whole situation with Carly’s father and the Hardshaw group. As I’ve said before, I truly admire Carly. She may be broken in a lot of ways, but she is still an incredibly kind and loving human being, and she continues to demonstrate that in this book. I hope that she will one day be able to relax and enjoy her life without the fear of being found by her father. She deserves it!
I was happy to see many of our beloved Drum, Tennessee residents make an appearance such as Hank, Lula, Ruth, Jerry, Max, and—my absolute favorite—Marco. I really love the friendship that has blossomed between Carly and Marco. I do see a bit of a love triangle developing here between Carly, Marco, and Wyatt, and I have a definite preference for who she ultimately ends up with. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
I absolutely love Carly!! This is the 3rd book in the series and starts several months after the events of book 2. Carly is back in action when a body is discovered at the construction site. Wyatt asks her for help and she wants to discover the truth in hopes of unearthing other secrets. Carly and the rest of the cast of characters are so well written. They feel genuine, and I devoured every word. I love this book and this series. Carly is on a journey of self discovery and she is taking others along for the ride. I loved this book and cant wait to read the next!!
Denise Grover Swank once again shows her brilliance as an author in “One Foot in the Grave”. This is the third book in the Carly Moore Series and is an “edge of your seat” type mystery.
Carly is hiding out in the backwoods town of Drum, Tennessee. She tries to stay unnoticed in the background, but that just doesn’t pan out. The people of Drum have more secrets than a crooked politician and Wyatt Drummond is chief among them. When he asks Carly to see what she can find out about the bones uncovered at a new construction site, she is pulled into a deception so widespread and deep that anyone in town could be the culprit and she couldbe the next target.
One Foot in the Grave is fast paced and all consuming. It will have you reading well into the night to get to the conclusion, which is totally unexpected. A wonderful mystery that kept me wondering if everyone in town was in on it. A highly recommended read.
