Beautifully written, One Eighty is a clever and remarkable high school bully romance with a unique twist. I found the premise of the novel to be promising and the execution of the story was exceptional. The prologue left me gasping and I was so engaged in the story that I couldn’t put the book down.
The characters in this novel are well developed and have many layers. Piper and Dalton are both flawed, but also possess strength. I REALLY didn’t want to like Dalton in the beginning, but the author wove together their story in such a way that he did win me over. The author also illustrates the devastating effects that bully can have on others and she will lead you on a journey of heartbreak and hope. She’ll have you wondering – Is it possible to redeem oneself after committing so many atrocious acts towards another? And is it possible to forgive and eventually trust a tormenter who has no recollection of the harm that he has caused?
One Eighty my first book by this author and I fully intend to read more of her works.
Dalton and Piper are amazing characters. This book is a great story filled with cruel high schoolers, heartbreak and a love you weren’t sure was going to happen. The first book in this series had me captivated and I’m itching for the second one! Another Marie James homerun!
The first book in a new series from Marie follows Dalton and Piper. For alot of people this will bring back some bad memories of how cruel school children can be for no reason. From the start Dalton brought out such intense emotions in me. He wasn’t likeable at all, he was vindictive, spiteful and the worst type of bully one who actively encourages others to do his bidding. Piper is an amazing young woman, what she endures would break most people. Piper had her moments where she gave into the pain and doubt so many times I wanted to put my arms around her and tell her to hold on. When an accident robs Dalton of his memories his life now becomes a blank slate, a chance to redeem himself in Piper’s eyes. We see them try to work towards friendship and love. This was such a painful read at times but for me at it’s core was forgiveness. Personally I would have liked Dalton to suffer a little more and see some more of their time at school. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series.
WOW! Dalton and his groupies are the worst of the worst.
What they do to Piper is so wrong and to think it all stems back to something that happened in grade school.
The car accident definitely changed the dynamics of the relationship.
Piper has every right to expect the other shoe to drop at anytime. She has learned to live with the way she has been treated for years by cutting herself. Dalton sees what he has caused her to do to herself because of the way he treated her and thinks that she will be better off without him. Boy does she have some things to tell him.
I have read other books from Marie James and have never been disappointed in anything I have read.
Marie James knocked the socks off me with this book. Don’t usually go for the “bully” books but this one has a different spin on it and was a great read…I cried and laughed at different parts of the book. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Gah! I don’t know how to begin to express how much I loved this book! I am not going to say too much because I don’t want to spoil this book for you. It is an absolutely amazing, gritty, raw, and real love story!
One-Eighty is an angsty bully, enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, high-school, slow-burn, second-chance romance. I don’t read a lot of bully romances but I am so glad that I read this one. The plot is very well-written. The emotions bleed off of the pages and bury themselves in your heart. The story is well-paced. Marie James does a phenomenal job of weaving a tale filled with angst, tragedy, heartbreak, love, forgiveness, and a twist that I didn’t see coming. I loved the characters. They were relatable and real.
I was sucked in from the epilogue. This story was such a page-turner and left me with a book hangover. Although it is heartbreaking, it was a beautiful love story about learning to trust, second chances, and the power of forgiveness. The twist almost killed me but this book does end in an HEA. This is an absolute must-read. I loved the angst and emotions. I highly recommend reading this book!

Not what I expected..
…this book will grab by the heart and soul..
In the beginning, your heart will break, as you observe Pipers realty.
As you go deeper, this book consumes you.
Read this, once you start you keep reading until the end.
I’m not really even sure where to start with this review, because my emotions were all over the place with this one. Pure anger and hatred over how mean spirited people can be to joy and triumph over those people being put in their places. This book was such a departure from what Marie usually writes, but I loved it! Looking forward to seeing other character stories unfold!
This is the 1st on a new series and what a fantastic introduction this story is. Piper had been bullied by Dalton for a long time, and when they are in an accident he wakes up with amnesia, which results in him being a totally different person. Will Dalton be able to redeem himself? This is a well written story which is intense, with emotion, twists, drama which all leads to an all-round entertaining read which had me totally captivated throughout this addictive page turner. I cannot wait to read the 2nd book in this amazing series.
4 1/2 stars
Dalton Payne is the undisputed king of Westover Prep. He lords it over the others with his other arrogant so-called friends and their one mission in life seems to be to make Piper Schofield’s life an abject misery. They have succeeded for years.
Dalton’s life so far is broken into pre accident and post accident. Pre accident he was an arrogant, nasty piece of work. Post accident he is still confident but with his memory loss he is unsure, so less confident and cocky. He knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go for it and I admire that about him but he now allows himself to feel empathy for others and experience other emotions. I hated him pre accident but then I’m sure we were meant to
Piper is quite a complex character; downtrodden and basically abused by her peers for years and years she has never really stood up for herself. Yet she does have an inner strength that is admirable too. She is an extremely likeable character and one to be admired as well.
The emotional tangle associated with the elite seniors of Westover Prep is incredible. I honestly felt so incensed with that group I could have easily dropped a bomb on them, and that would have been a kindness.
This is an emotional story and quite original which is saying something seeing as stories about YA bulling are now quite common and the reason for the extra half a star. This storyline steps outside the box and explores quite a few issues. I’m looking forward to reading book two.
Have you ever taken a step outside your comfort zone and just done something you normally wouldn’t do? Reading this book was for me just that. It might seem silly to equate reading a book to that but trust me it isn’t. Not to to someone like me who loves reading and does it with every spare minute of her time.
I normally don’t read YA books and I actively avoid bully romances. This book is both and I do not regret reading it for one hot second. New to me author Marie James has written an incredible love story that will have you engaged from page 1.
Piper and Dalton are neighbors, they’ve grown up together but not as friends. Dalton torments Piper with a singleminded intensity that is frightening, you will despise him. Piper is resigned, buying time until high school ends and she can distance herself from both the boy and his crew, you will shed a tear for her.
One night will change everything and lead them down a new road, a road where the past will be put to rest and the future rewritten. Watching Piper and Dalton work their way towards a future together will have you sigh in relief after everything that came first and you will fall in love with both them and this book. TBR and enjoy. (I read an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.)
4++ stars – not your typical bully romance.
This one starts out as you’d expect – a rotten to the core high school boy is holding a stupid grudge towards a classmate and making her life a living h*ll!!
However, this one turns into something much deeper and so much more. An accident changes Dalton in a BIG way. The crux is whether or not Piper can believe his transformation is real. She is truly scarred by her past because of him – both physically and emotionally. Plus the accident complicates things.
This one really pulled you into the story. You will cringe at the levels of cruelty, you will agonize over Dalton’s attempts to show who he is now although no one seems to believe him, it will bring tears when he is trying to be selfless.
“When you get your memories back, it’ll only make things ten times worse.” “I don’t want my memories back. I don’t want to be that guy.”
“…sex isn’t all I want from her. That comes as a reward after she gives me her heart, and I won’t take the bonus until I have the main prize.”
This book was much more than I expected and definitely went beyond the surface of most bully romances. And the ending for these two was so sweet to watch unfold.
Can’t wait for the next book – it should be interesting with a new couple.
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
For years he’s been her tormentor, with faithful followers to taunt her some more.
She’s cried so many times over his cruel pranks and evil words.
But now she’s ready to stand up for herself.
One makeover, one party and it will all be different come tomorrow, just not in the way she thinks…
I wasn’t sure of this book until the night in question came about.
Before that my attention wavered a little, but once the car crumpled, I was completely and utterly engrossed and enthralled in the rebuilding of their lives.
The snippets of their shared past were full of darkness and pain. A little window into how they were. Harsh, but true and to fully understand the characters these were needed.
I loved the gradual transition from the past to present and how they both developed and evolved. Quite beautiful!
I’ve not read Marie before, but I know one thing I definitely want to both read more of her, and more of this series!
I’m all for redeemable a*holes, but for a hot second I thought Dalton’s actions were unforgivable. Man was I wrong! One-Eighty is a fantastic bully romance. This leopard really can change his spots! He quite literally gets some sense knocked into himself when he gets into a horrible accident and loses the vast majority of his memories. This is a good example of “when one door closes another one opens”. The door to his memories and past behavior closes and he and Piper are allowed to have a fresh start. Boy do they need it too. While Dalton isn’t physically abusive to Piper, his mental abuse is horrible to read about.
The one downside to this story that I feel you need warning about is that there are references to self-harm in this book. Those parts aren’t graphic in nature, so I guess I can see why the author left out any mention in the blurb. However, I like to point out things that I think you should know before reading, so there you go. Overall the story was really enjoyable, if hard to read at times, but if a bully romance isn’t hard to read then it isn’t well written! I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2 “Catch Twenty Two”. Frankie’s story is such an intriguing mystery that I’m sure it will be delicious!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! I don’t normally read a lot of YA, but I thought why not give Ms. James a chance and I am so glad I did! This was my first book by her, but I can rest assured it will not be my last.
I hate bullies. The cruelness, hatred, and disdain they display make me want to fight. Dalton was all that and more. I hated everything about him.
I feel for people that are bullied. The feelings they must go through as people treat them like second class citizens. Piper was bullied to the point of pain.
This story was intense and deep. It was eye-opening and realistic. It was dramatic and heartbreaking. It was cathartic and healing. It was forgiveness and redemption. It was hate and love. It was a phenomenal read.
Piper is the typical nerdy good girl that every bully finds it easy to pick on. Dalton is the super jock that rules the school and everyone in it. All that changes when opening a door at a party throws their world on it’s axis. An accident that changes everything, yet the past still haunts them both. New friendships are forged and despite her best efforts, Piper starts to believe that just maybe, she can trust what’s in front of her.
Intense, cruel, hateful. Just what you’d expect when it comes to a bully romance. But. There’s more. So much more to this story than that. Twists and turns, redemption, forgiveness, there are so many different layers that it just pulls you in and doesn’t let go until the end.
A fantastic read. I enjoy reading billy romances and really loved Marie’s twist. One Eighty was so much more than I expected going in, it’s an emotion roller coaster that will pull at every one of your heartstrings, it will make you mad, disappointed and ugly cry along the way.
Piper and Dalton – the popular jerk-wad and the girl next door. These two aren’t your usual couple. He was her bully along with most of the other student at Westover Prep. One night, one choice, one accident changes both of their lives forever things drastically change. He hates who they all claim he use to be and will stop at nothing to prove this new him is here to stay.
My all time favorite Bully Romance!
Highly Recommended to all lovers of Romance!
Well-written and intriguing start to the Westover Prep series. Piper and Dalton’s relationship took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I hated Dalton for about 85% of the book but he redeemed himself in the end. Not my usual type of read but glad I gave it a chance. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
Marie James proves that she can write any trope and have it be absolutely amazing. A departure from her usual MC and other intriguing romances, this story takes us into the darkness and pain of bullying. Piper has been bullied her entire life by her hot neighbor, never really knowing what she did to bring on the kind of terror he releases on her on a daily basis. Dalton is just a class A jerk. Yes he is hot and yes he is popular but he is also the stuff of nightmares for Piper. One horrible accident changes everything but not in a way you would ever imagine. I was on the edge of my seat just waiting for the other shoe to drop (holy crap lady, that prologue nearly gutted me). Is it possible for past actions, for a bully to ever be redeemed? For any reason? Is it even remotely possible that the victim of such terror would ever forgive her taunter? Marie James weaves a story that would seemingly be almost impossible but had me craving more none the less.
Title: One-Eighty
Author: Marie James
Genre: Bully/Enemy to Lovers Romance
**RECEIVED ARC FOR HONEST REVIEW**
This is a different type of story than what you normally get from Marie James. It is awesome to see her step out of her comfort zone and write something new and different.
Basically we have a young girl who lives next to a young man, both in HS, known each other since kindergarten and boy decides she is the worthy recipient of his bullying.
The really interesting thing about this book is the social and personal struggles that are addressed. It isn’t just being bullied. People don’t realize there are macro and micro consequences to bullying. But…as far as the book goes I really would have liked to have seen more about WHY he has a change of heart. Yeah it was probably already there and needed a catalyst even with the catalyst it is just so abrupt. No wonder everyone is like, huh? Plus she becomes his obsession. What about his other interpersonal relationships?
Still a really good read that I enjoyed.
