One Eighty is my first Marie James and I can definitely say I love how original the plot is! Everyone loves a good bully romance, but it’s not often we see a bully really brought to his knees and have to work towards his redemption.
Piper is such a sweet girl. She’s a loyal friend and daughter, caring, hard working. She also happens to live next door to her bully, too. Dalton is the king of Westover Prep, a popular baseball player who has been tormenting Piper since they were in kindergarten. If he’s not doing the teasing himself, someone else is at his behest.
All it takes is one night for both of their lives to change. An accident robs Dalton of his memories, but for Piper, she’ll never be able to forget the years of abuse at his hands. Dalton claims he’s changed, but can Piper trust him?
Unfortunately, this book just didn’t click for me. While the story was there, I just couldn’t connect to it. I was hoping for more; more angst, more emotion, more heat… just more. The writing, while good from a technical standpoint, didn’t seem very mature. In my opinion, this would be a great read for an actual young adult, not for anyone older than the high schoolers in the book themselves. A lot of the themes just seemed repetitive and I was hoping for more conflict as well. It fell short for me, but that doesn’t mean it will for you though.
Piper is the girl you see at school who blends into the shadows. For some (stupid) reason, the resident bully asshole, Dalton, has picked her to be the center of his attention. Only it’s not the good kind of attention, it’s the most negative kind of attention you can subject someone to. And it’s taken its toll on poor Piper. And then the accident that changed everything changed Dalton’s attention to something completely different. Can this be his redemption?
I have to admit right off the bat that bully romances are getting a bit old for my tastes. They’ve been about done to death, and few rarely reach the pinnacle of bully romance that I have L.J. Shen’s Vicious on. However, I liked One-Eighty. Why? Because it’s different. It’s got a twist that sets it apart from the average bully romance and made it more interesting than the standard issue. I ended up rooting for Piper and Dalton and found their story of love and redemption to be really interesting and engaging reading. If you’re in the mood for a bully romance that’s out of the box, albeit one with triggers, then I think you’ll enjoy One-Eighty as I did.
OMG, this book doesn’t even end! Since I knew there was a sequel, I was expecting either a cliffhanger or the story of another character in this story but what I found is that the story just stops short, an epilogue that’s not an epilogue because it left a lot of plot holes open. Eeeekk!
I love YA bully stories, and this was an unusually cruel one. Piper rejected playing with Dalton in Kindergarten, preferring to play with Dillon, and her destiny was set. Dalton started to hate her and play pranks on her, pranks that got more serious and vicious as they grew up. Finally, in high school, Piper is a pariah, bullied by Dalton and all his cronies, who bully her just to please their leader of the a-holes pack.
Until one day, there’s an accident, Dalton loses his memory and turns a complete one-eighty change in attitude. Now he’s on to Piper, wants her to be his girl, and pursues her relentlessly.
The premise of the story is very intriguing. I had read a similar plot before, where the guy changes personality upon losing his memory, or maybe it is that having a blank memory allows him to see the error of his ways. Poor Dalton had to face the rejections from Piper, the scorn from his siblings, the distrust from Piper’s parents, and the bewilderment of his classmates who just don’t understand his change of heart. From a guy who was on top of the world, he’s now the guy on everyone’s hit list. And Piper just can’t trust the guy, and with reason!
This was an entertaining and convincing story, except that in the last part we get two horny teenagers with pages and pages of sexual discoveries, foreplay, and all that. It got a little juvenile, boring and cheesy. I liked Piper’s maturity and serenity, and liked Dalton’s new attitude, showing acceptance of his sins and full of atonement. I felt that instead of such an excessively detailed narrative of their sexual discoveries, their experiences as they start school and interact with the rest of the student world would have been much more interesting.
The end of the story is underwhelming, since many of their obstacles haven’t been solved, and the epilogue served more as a transition into the story of the next book. This last part was disappointing, even though I loved them as a couple.
Well there is no doubt that Marie can write high school bully romance! Piper was amazingly strong for someone who has been bullied since she was little. She knows how to hold her hear up high and let it all roll off her back. Even going so far as to save her bully from himself one night. Dalton was snubbed as a child, and held on to his hurt and anger for years, making Piper pay for how she made him feel that fateful day. After a tragic accident, Dalton definitely does a One-Eighty! Can Piper ever forgive him and move forward? This is an absolute must read if you’re a fan of this genre!
This book will take you on a journey that you aren’t expecting!
There’s so much pain, heartache and angst throughout this book but it’s also full of love, kindness and hope.
These characters will draw you in and you will become absorbed. Piper and Dalton aren’t your usual pair of high schoolers and their past is a dark and ugly one but this story shows you how you can’t help who you love and how acceptance, forgiveness and understanding can help you heal.
Looking forward to reading the next book!
This is my first book that I’ve read of this author. Initially I started this book, and stopped. I had a hard time getting I to it.
Inevitably I picked it up again as I do most books I struggle to get into. Unlike most books it sucked me into the world of Dalton and Piper.
The hate that this girl has had to deal with was strong, and her way of dealing was, unfortunately, so normal for this day and age. I love that Dalton was able to change. I hate that it took a huge event for it to happen.
This book started out slow for me, but once I hit around 20% in my kindle things definitly picked up. I’m glad I gave it a second chance. I am off to read another book by this author, and will be picking up the second book in this series when it’s released!
I absolutely love Marie James. Her books are freaking amazing. I was not expecting this one at all. This was a mind blowing storyline with two wonderful characters. I absolutely love what Marie did what these two and how these two end up in the end. This was not only an emotional book but had a little romance in it as well. It wasn’t just a bully storyline.
These two have been enemies since they were little. It got worse the older they get. Dalton does some unthinkable things to Piper that will forever change her life. Piper will never be the same or so she thinks. Being bullied is something that Piper is used too. But one night changes everything for these two. Dalton loses his memory and doesn’t know what he has done to Piper in the past. All he knows is that Piper is a beautiful girl and someone that he wants. But it isn’t going to be that easy. Loved the storyline between these two. So beautifully written. Pulls at your heart stings and has you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what is going to happen next between these two. I read this in one setting because I had to know what was going to happen between Dalton and Piper. Dalton is quite the bad guy at the beginning someone you don’t want to like and believe me I didn’t. But by the end you see that he has changed. But Piper also changed through this whole book too. She became stronger and someone that fought back. A great book from beginning to end. A book I will highly recommend one clicking. I cant wait to read the next one.
He was her bully and he tortured her so bad. They go to the same party and when they are leaving she grabs his keys from him. There is an accident and it changes him for the better and he is trying to get her to trust him. It will have you in awe over the changes that has occurred.
It’s been a while since I read a bully romance and it was so good. One Eighty is such great story. It has intense, emotional and heartbreaking moments. It had a really great storyline that will have your emotions running up and down. This story takes you on a journey through the life of two young people. Piper gets bully by Dalton and his friends. It’s painful to see Piper go through the things Dalton did to her. An accident changes everything between Piper and Dalton. It has all the twists and turns, some moments in the story where some certain truths are revealed and things starts to changes for both them. It’s was great to see how Dalton redeemed himself. I loved the two characters together and look forward for Frankie and Zeke’s book. I’m looking forward to more from Westover Prep.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow this was a fabulous story taking you from hating the bully to rooting for him to get the girl.
Piper is the sweet, smart girl who’s trying to get through high school so she can escape her miserable life at Westover Prep. Being the girl who is bullied and tortured everyday of her life since middle school shes ready for a new life far away from the boy who leads the pack of wolves who make her believe that some days she would be better off dead. With secrets to keep from her parents she writes everything in her journals just so she has somewhere to vent and get all those feels out.
Dalton is the bully who has caused this wonderful girl to be the butt of every kind of joke, prank and abuse possible. From nick naming her Bloody Mary to pranking her into believing she has a chance with one of the baseball players, only when this happens it backfires on to him also. When he tries to drive home drunk she steps in to stop him only to have him egg her on causing her to lose control and go over the side of the road.
After the accident Dalton loses his memory and Piper feels so guilty. But was this the best thing to happen to her and him? Now Dalton has fallen for Piper and has decided he wants her to be his only to find out he was an awful person to her for years. Will he be able to make it up to her and get her to fall for him or is she to broken to know he is truly a changed person?
This was one of those really great written bully stories that gives you all the feels and makes that roller coaster ride so worth taking.
Well this was my first bully romance. I wasn’t really sure how I was going to like it. How could a bully redeem himself? By the end of the book I had laughed and cried and cried some more but it was a very good read. Definitely can’t wait for Frankie and Zeke now!!
Oh My Gosh! I love this book.
Dalton has been the bane of Piper’s existence since kindergarten. Seems he felt snubbed when she didn’t play with him on the first day of school and he’s been making her life a living hell ever since. Narcissistic much?
When Piper refuses to let Dalton drive home drunk from a party that he’s arranged for her to be humiliated, yet again, they get into a terrible accident. She’s hurt but he’s ejected from the car and has a massive brain injury. When he wakes, he can’t remember anything after he was five, before the playground incident. This can’t be good – or can it?
4.5 stars
This was a phenomenal start to what will be an addictive new series from Marie James. She pulled so many emotions from me reading this one.
I honestly wanted to wrap Piper up in cotton wool and protect her from everyone around her. I loved her. Considering everything she had been put through she still managed to find forgiveness for her main tormentor and neighbour Dalton. She has this inner strength really which is amazing considering the hell her peers have unleashed on her on a daily basis.
I really wanted to hate Dalton, and believe me I did at the beginning. The amount of times I wanted to reach through my kindle and nut punch him. He did manage to redeem himself towards though. Just a shame it took a serious accident to change his ways but Dalton 2.0 was much better.
Marie James’s writing had me captivated from beginning to end of this gripping read. The way she started this made my jaw hit the floor so well done!! Its intense and with some brilliant twists and turns. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because I wanted the mean group to get a big knock down but that’s just because I am evil lol
For quite a while I’ve been saying that Young Adult romance isn’t my thing. After some deep reflection (and several YA books!) I’ve come to the conclusion that that statement is, indeed, a lie. I’m a fan IF the story is an intriguing one and is well written. And after reading One Eighty, I’m absolutely looking forward to Catch Twenty Two!
One Eighty is a bully romance with a bit of a twist. The bully doesn’t slowly realize he’s in love with the heroine. It’s a full-blown, well…one hundred eighty degrees turn around after an accident took his memories. It made me wonder if my views of any former acquaintances or friends would change if I didn’t have preconceived notions from my memories of them. Definitely food for thought.
Dalton is a huge jerk at the beginning of the story. There’s no way around it. He’s everything we envision a bully being. So when he gets a bit of a comeuppance, I nearly cheered out loud.
Piper is simply trying to hang on until she can escape high school and her small town. She has her eyes set on a brighter future. Can she trust that Dalton isn’t leading her on just to make her life even more miserable than he already has?
NICUnurse’s Rating: I really liked the premise of this story, and I was beyond thrilled when the book grabbed me and hooked me in the first chapter. My heart broke for Piper while I really wanted to strangle Dalton. My intense feelings for the characters by the end of chapter 1 told me a lot. And my instincts weren’t wrong. One Eighty was intense and heartbreaking, and heartwarming all in one. It was also thought-provoking, as I mentioned previously. For YA fans that love a book chocked full of angst, One Eighty by Marie James is definitely a book you don’t want to miss.
I give One-Eighty by Marie James 4.5 out of 5 stars!
5 of 5 stars
If you’re looking for a book you won’t want to put down from the moment you start it then One Eighty is it.
The prologue made my heart hurt. And after that I was just so sucked into the story I didn’t want it to end.
There were so many unexpected aspects and twists in the book. The main one being how this author could create this character that I loved and kind of hated all at the same time. That was Dalton.
Piper on the other hand was this beautiful, impossible not to love character that was so strong despite the awful things she’d endured.
I felt in awe of this book. I already knew Marie James is a good author. I’ve known that for years. But I felt like this book was a whole new level. Once again there were hard, life altering type of issues in this book.
They were handled with care and really left me as a reader wanting to be more aware of what kind of an impression and impact I’m leaving on those around me.
This might be one of the best books Marie James has ever written, and I know it’s one of my favorites.
Let me start this by saying I have a HUGE soft spot for enemies to lovers stories and bully romance and Marie James wrote an incredible story that fills that void for me. The thin line between love and hate is trampled between these two characters and the story is a wild ride that had me anxiously awaiting what was going to happen next.
One Eighty is the first book of the Westover Prep series. I loved reading and following Piper and Dalton’s story. Theirs can be considered a second chance story. Before the accident Dalton wasn’t a nice person, but after with his memory gone can he be a different person. Piper has her demons to deal with because of the accident. I look forward to reading book two.
Oh my! Marie James blew me away with this book! I absolutely loved this bully / enemies to lovers romance! Piper and Dalton’s story so was captivating that I couldn’t put it down. Their story was certainly different from Marie James’ MC series that I love, but she has definitely earned 5 stars on this amazing read!
This book is a new in a series and I will read the next book.
Piper is a girl making her way through school to get out and start fresh.
Dalton is the king. Whatever he says everyone does.
When an accident changes both their lives, will they ever be the same?
The bullying in this book was over the top extreme for me. Piper is so much stronger than I ever could be in that same situation.
Piper and Dalton were enemies at the school they attend with Dalton being a bully to her. Dalton has an accident and loses his memory. He wants to be with Piper but she can’t forget. This is more than just bullying, it’s about forgiveness, redemption and standing your ground. The two make you want to throw your kindle but then you have to keep reading to find out what will happen.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving a review.
