The Hero really does do a One-Eighty as the title says!
I love these bully romance books. This is another one that strays a bit from the standard format of the wealthy king of the Prep school bullying the new poor girl that came in on scholarship or something similar. In this story both the bully and bullied (Hero and heroine) are fairly wealthy and are next door neighbors. They have known each other since they were small.
The Hero’s name is Dalton Payne and he thought Piper Schofield was the prettiest girl in kindergarten until she decided to play with another boy instead of him and from that day forward he set out to make her pay for choosing someone else over him. Dalton’s name calling and pranks on Piper got worse as the years went on. As Dalton became more handsome and popular he got his friends and most of the school to join in on the bullying.
Piper was tormented for twelve years and she had only her senior year left before she could get out of town and attend college. However, everything changes the summer before her senior year when both Piper and Dalton are in a car accident. Dalton has a head injury and loses all his memories of the past twelve years. He finds himself attracted to Piper and remembers nothing of the awful human being he used to be.
Piper’s and Dalton’s families are close since they are neighbors and Piper never told her parents how bad it had gotten at school with Dalton and his friends because the one time she did in grade school her parents just brushed it off as “boys will be boys”. So Piper is hired by Dalton’s parents to tutor his 13 year old sister Peyton over the summer. She ends up spending a great deal of time at their house while Dalton tries to wear her down and get her to see that he has changed. But Dalton has a hard road ahead of him. Piper was tormented badly over a very long period of time and doesn’t think she can forgive him.
This book goes deep into mental issues that can result from bullying such as thoughts of suicide and self harm so beware if those are triggers. I like that they are shown, though I suspect they are not so easy to overcome. There are some pretty steamy scenes but not until near the end of the book. Overall I really enjoyed this book and will read more from this author!
Fall in love with Dalton and Piper
Dalton character at the beginning was hard to like. If that was his character the whole time I don’t think I could have read this book. Good thing one night changed it all.
Piper is a spitfire. I loved her right from the start. She liked to make everyone think she couldn’t stand up for herself. But we could all see how strong she was.
This book will make you think. It’s about forgiveness, redemption and love. I think a love that was there from the start but Dalton couldn’t get past whatever was holding him back from Piper. It’s like he got stuck as the her bully and couldn’t figure out how to change it. So he will have to fight against years of resentment to get his HEA.
This book will not disappoint. And I highly recommend it.
Loved this bully to lovers read by Marie! Dalton & Pipers story is amazing. And as always Marie wrote an outstanding love story that will take your heart & twist it, break it & then she fixes you all back up. You will hate everything Dalton is & then you will absolutely love him! Can’t wait for more from this series, come on Frankie!!
This is the first bully book for author Marie James and I’ve gotta say she nailed it to a T. This series has great potential and I want them all, I don’t know how many will be in it but I love it!
One Eighty is a different kind of Bully Romance. It is painful to read in the beginning, just because high schoolers can be so cruel. But then it twists and morphs into something else entirely. It takes redemption and forgiveness to a whole new level. And while it is entertaining, it also makes you wonder how you would react if you were in similar situations. It has a bit of Darkness, but also Light. It has characters that make you want to throw your kindle, but also try and understand. Marie James has written another fantastic book! *It should be noted that while it says this book is book 1, it does not have a cliffhanger. 5 Full Stars!
Style: Enemy to Lovers Romance (High School)
Story: 4/5
Sexual: OK
Enjoyment: 3/5
Series: Book 1
This an emotional read. Dalton’s and Piper’s story takes place over summer vacation and not at school. Dalton, jerk of the century, however, I only know him as the sweetest guy after the accident. Piper, bless her heart. That girl puts up with so much bullying it’s hard to read all the things that has been done.
This was truly a read on the power of forgiveness. I think this shines a tiny light on how bullying affect some people mentally and physically. I enjoyed, Dalton’s sister Peyton, she definitely needs her own story. Frankie, I don’t know *spoiler* Dalton mention that Frankie was in on the joke with Piper in the beginning. However, Frankie denied this. This made me not really feel comfortable with Frankie because I still wasn’t sure if she was a true friend. Also, I don’t feel all were resolved.
I was just a little disappointed with their physical chemistry. It was definitely there, but I felt towards the end when they were finally intimate, felt rushed and I thought, that’s it? I enjoyed the build up but a bit of a let down towards the end.
Overall, I still enjoy the story and the characters.
***I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s definitely about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the stories you read. I hope this review was helpful.
The title of this book truly represents the heart of this story. It’s just perfect. I was expecting a typical high school bully romance in this story but I got so much more than that.
I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. It pulls you in and absorbs you into the story. The storytelling was very natural and effortless. The plot of the story was very intriguing. I am going to be honest and say that I don’t think that the premise of the story was all that realistic, but it was definitely entertaining. The overall story had a great flow but I felt that there could have been a little more conflict in the story. The ending of the story left a lot of unanswered questions but I am hoping that they will be answered in future books in this series.
The characters were very relatable. I loved that these characters were very authentic. They both had flaws and neither of them was perfect. I also like how they both stayed true to themselves and fought for what they wanted. I liked the character growth from both Dalton and Piper in the story. They are both different people at the end of the book from the people at the start of the story.
The romance in this story was a complicated one. Dalton used to bully Piper relentlessly but can’t remember a thing after the accident. He tries to prove to Piper that he is different and that he is sorry for everything that he put her through. Piper is dealing with this new Dalton who is kind to her while still remembering all the things he used to do to her. They both have to overcome all these feelings while falling in love with the other.
Overall, this is a compelling story about forgiveness. This is a powerful story that touches on bullying and self-harm so it isn’t an easy read by any means. I was totally invested in this story and I can’t wait to read the second book in this series!
‘One Eighty’ is the first book that I have read by Marie James, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an easy to read teen enemies to lovers romance, that had me wanting to know how the plot would develop.
The book is about Piper, a teen girl who is getting brutally bullied by her next door neighbour. She is unaware of what she ever did to deserve his hatred, and longs to leave town and escape the life where people know her as ‘bloody Mary’ rather than Piper.
Dalton had the life anyone would envy, he ran the school,
Had hot girls falling at his feet, and was surrounded by friends. But nothing could stop him from being a grade A asshole.
His wounded pride enabled him to make his neighbours life hell, but deep down he can’t help but find her attractive. But after their worlds collide and they are both in an accident, it changes everything, and Dalton does a complete one eighty in how he acts towards her.
Full of drama, chemistry and teen love. Perfect treat for any romance lovers.
Okay. I fell in love with this book from the burb and it was absolutely everything that I wanted it to be. This is a trope that I continually can get behind. I love watching the back and forth between the characters and the two absolutely do not let you down.
This book was on it. It was a fast paced, non stop read that had everything I wanted it to have. Bully romanced can get repetitive but this one? This one was absolutely not what you think is coming and kept me on my toes.
I loved the back and forth between these two. Piper and Dalton both had healing to do and the chemistry between them was evident as you read. You will be cheering them on as much as I was, I promise. A bully romance with a twist you don’t see coming. Grab it up!
One Eighty is the first book in this series and my first reading from the author.
After reading this book, I was really on the fence if this was supposed to be a bully romance or enemies-to-lovers. While it did start as one, the story evolved into something more that I’ve enjoyed immensely. As I dived into the story, I was taken by surprise and slowly fell in love with Dalton. I believe this story is about redemption, in more ways than one, and I admired Dalton for it. While the story ends in HEA, I felt like it’s still open ended and that we will still see them in the next couple’s story.
Yeah, so I saw a high school romance and jumped at the chance to read it. Again!
I’ve been on quite the YA/NA binge lately, I’ve accumulated some hits and some misses but I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.
The thing that worked for me the most was the overall premise of the book which was very promising.
Now why the 3 Stars? While One-Eighty has all the things that I know for a fact I have enjoyed to the point of rating books 4.5 or even 5 stars, this one failed at hitting the bulls-eye for me.
The things that didn’t work for me is a lot longer. I had a hard time connecting to either Piper or Dalton and I was able to feel the click or spark between the two of them.
I would have loved to see more depth in the characters. High schoolers are multi-faceted like nobody’s business and there are hundreds of things going on at the same time and I would have enjoyed seeing that in the background along with Piper and Dalton’s past.
Dalton losing his memory and getting to start over seemed a tad too convenient given the timing and that confession? That didn’t work all that well. The “one-eighty” turn that Dalton seemed too perfect. He was too perfect and I couldn’t connect or relate with what was going on with him.
Piper had quite the story to tell and few aspects that I would have appreciated to have a more in-depth view. There was so much to play with when it came to their shared history. Ms James should have delved into it and shown it to us, given that the bullying was a major part of both their lives as the bully and the bullied rather than mention it in passing or just gloss over the details when it played a huge role in shaping who Piper was.
This had all the elements to be a great read but unfortunately, this just did not work for me.
1.5 – 2 Stars!
It seems like bully romance is in in a big way at the moment and to be honest it’s not something I read a lot of recently. It used to be one I enjoyed but I have been going through a low angst, safe romance faze for a while. However with all of my GoodReads feeds being flooded with it I haven’t been able to avoid it and the blurb for this one had me racing to Amazon and discovering it’s a KU title.
So I’m not going to lie Dalton was a complete jerk and he made everyone else join in on Pipers torture. And when his amnesia hit I wasn’t really sure what to expect especially after reading the prologue. Because that prologue had me holding my breath for most of the book.
Dalton gave pretty good grovel but Piper didn’t just roll over. She held him accountable for everything he had put her through and she didn’t just trust in his newfound change of heart. But as he proved himself and she forgave him she didn’t hold it over his head either.
I loved her inner strength. She was mature beyond her years and although she didn’t stand up for herself her strength and maturity came from all that she’d been through. And I really liked her. She knew her worth and she communicated what she was feeling and what she wanted.
I really really wanted to see Dalton get his memory back and more of how their relationship was received at the school. And I felt the ending was a little abrupt and left things too open but it has set up Frankie and Zeke’s story. Fingers crossed we get more Dalton and Piper in their book because I want more.
I loved this book!! Marie James is a new-to-me author and I am super excited for more from this series! This is so much more than just a bully romance. I couldn’t put it down! It’s raw, heartbreaking, emotional and wonderfully written. The prologue grabs you right out of the gate!
You’ll have no problem hating Dalton as he is the bully of all bullies. Piper is a shy, sweet girl who suffers in silence and it breaks my heart. Not only does she have to deal with Dalton and his cruelty but also all his followers as well.
They both are in an accident that causes him to lose his memory from the last ten years. He has no idea how he has treated Piper all he knows is that he wants her. I loved watching their relationship change from enemies to lovers. Can’t wait for more!
Dalton has been cruel and vicious to Piper for 12 years, since they were 5 years old. The last day of their junior year of high school there is a big party and Piper is dragged there by protest by her best friend, Frankie. Of course there is another prank set up to humiliate Piper and she runs out. At the same time the same prank humiliates Dalton so he storms out as well. Piper runs into him and despite him being so evil to her she forces him to let her drive because he is drunk. They get into an argument that causes Piper to crash. Dalton wakes up from the crash with amnesia. He wakes up and sees Piper and thinks she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.
This is a bully book I can get behind. I really struggle with bully books because I don’t see how they move past it and I don’t really see a redemption. The book focuses so much on the bullying that I don’t see how they get to the love. This book takes a different approach and I LOVED it. The bullying was all in the past, they talked about some of the vile things Dalton did so we had context but this was about Dalton showing his love, proving his love and trying to obtain forgiveness for his past behavior. And the new and improved Dalton is amazing and such a sweet heart. I absolutely adored how he was so patient with Piper and was willing to do anything to prove that he was different and never wanted to be the old Dalton ever again. And for Piper to not instantly cave and make him work for it was reasonable and believable. This was my first Marie James book and it won’t be my last. I am looking forward to Catch Twenty Two and devouring her backlog. Highly recommend One Eighty.
I love all of Marie’s books. I was not a fan of bully books but this changed my mind. It took what seemed like the worst situation and turned it around. Each twist revealed another truth that the other did not know. You will hate to love this or is it the other way around.
I just. Wow. I loved it. It had me on tenterhooks the whole way through. First from picking up variousclues waiting for things to happen, then working out which way I thought things were going to go. To then actually reading what happened. To say it kept me engaged is an understatement. I love these characters, they are so beautifully portrayed, especially Dalton. Just a brilliant read.
Quote: I’m not supposed to want her. I’m supposed to ruin her.
I FLOVED One-Eighty by Marie James. As the start to a new series— the Westover Prep series—this book was a perfect time to try a new-to-me-author and I wasn’t disappointed. One-Eighty is a bully, new adult romance is entertaining as hell. I personally have a major fascination with bully romances—in fact, it’s part of my top three favorite tropes! One-Eighty is the story of of a douche-cannon bully turns prince and the girl he’s tortured for years. Only the bullying is only a brief aspect of this story and this becomes a story of forgiveness; a chance for redemption; and the opportunity find a once-in a-lifetime love. One-Eighty holds the drama of a New Adult/High School romance as I’d expect and is easy to pick up and read straight through to the conclusion. It’s sexy, sweet, entertaining and unique. I for one can’t wait to see what’s coming up next in the Westover Prep series! My recommendation is to one-click this now, before Catch Twenty-Two releases and you’re even farther behind! Five Stars!!
Quote: Tormenting the girl next door has been a regular part of my day since the very first day of kindergarten. I was willing to be her friend back then. She was the prettiest girl in pigtails after all, but after choosing to play with another kid over me, it was game on. I’m not second best. Never have been, never will be. That was the day I decided to make her life a living hell. I was a heathen at five, and now I’m unstoppable. I’ve reminded her of that every single day since.
Quote: I can’t let her go to the party as the sexiest girl in our senior class. If I notice how hot she is, that means others will too, and I need Mary to stay in the gutter right where I put her years ago.
I loved this book. This is unlike any other book Marie James has written. I have read all her books but this one has a whole new edge and spin to it. It is an enemies to lovers book for sure. It has a lot of bullying in it from a highschool stand point. It has romance, mystery, drama, and a love story.
Bullying has been the topic of these past few years and honestly I don’t get tired of reading this trope.
I especially love when the bullying takes place in either high school or college, but mostly high school because typically that’s when it happens the most.
The bullying seems to be going on for quite some time and even though I find it unnerving for someone to be bullied I get that kids these days find pleasure in causing pain to others.
I get that Dalton had to redeem himself and realized that he was head over heels in love with Piper and was doing everything in his power to get her attention. She on the other hand, was not giving in so easily because of everything she’s gone through with this jerk. But I did love the fact that he would go over and beyond to get this girl to forgive him for all his past indiscretions.
Over all, I thought the book was well written and it had me completely invested 100%. I enjoy a book that will hook me from beginning to end and One-Eighty had me hooked!
I am not what I just read, let me tell you..I would read One-Eighty over and over again. Where Marie pulled this story from, I have no idea but I can’t wait to see where this series plays out.
One-Eighty is not like anything Marie has ever written and from the start, it was one that I couldn’t put down. The character development made everything seem so real. They characters are so relatable that you could picture this happening in everyday life of a high school girl and boy.
The saying “boys are mean to you because he likes you” comes to life in One-Eighty. Dalton and Piper are back and forth trying to fight the feeling going through them and having the past always being brought in their faces. It is a true one step forward, two steps back scenario.
So far the best book of 2020.
