“A brilliant first novel. Joseph Schneider’s contemporary writing evokes some of Hollywood’s most classic crime stories, from Chinatown to LA Confidential.” —Dick Wolf, creator of Law & OrderDetective Tully Jarsdel may not be a typical LAPD cop—but he’s the only one who can solve this caseA body so badly burned that it could be mistaken for a movie prop… except for the smell. That’s not … it could be mistaken for a movie prop… except for the smell. That’s not something the LAPD finds lying on the street every day. And when Detective Tully Jarsdel is called to the scene, it’s clear to him that something about the placement of the corpse is intentional, even ritualistic. Jarsdel’s former career in academia seems to finally be coming in handy, rather than serving merely as material for jokes from his partner, Morales.
But nothing Jarsdel learned in school can prepare him for the deep evil behind this case, which appears to be as hopeless as it is violent. As Jarsdel and Morales attempt to settle their differences and uncover the motive behind the horrendous crime, they find themselves dragged into the underbelly of a city notorious for chewing up and spitting out anyone dumb enough to turn their back on survival.
One Day You’ll Burn is a shimmering debut that captures the glitz and squalor of LA while introducing an unforgettable detective readers will rank among the best in the genre.

A coyote found the body first as it lay at the base of a pagoda in Thailand Plaza. Driven by the fires that had consumed Griffith Park moving her natural food sources away, the scrawny coyote took off a chunk of thigh before the flashing lights and sirens of the first officers to arrive on scene sent her scurrying off elsewhere this new day.
Paramedics and firefighters soon add to the scene further snarling traffic. Not only does that snarl of traffic make it harder for morning commuters, it slows down the arrival of Detectives Tully Jarsdel and Morales. Five years on the force and new to homicide, the death of a person who was possibly tortured and then cooked alive at high temperatures much like your Sunday dinner roast, becomes his case to solve as lead detective in One Day You’ll Burn: A Novel by Joseph Schneider.
This police procedural combines a horrific case full of mystery in with elements of history and philosophy to create a compelling and intense read. Jarsdel walked away from a very promising career in academia and did so with tremendous personal repercussions that continue years later. His background is going to play a major role in the case as events unfold. A role that may encourage Morales and others to lay off the jokes for a while.
In addition to the main storyline, there are several secondary storylines at work in this debut police procedural. One of which involves the killing of family pets and may disturb some readers. Intense and very complicated, very graphic at times, One Day You’ll Burn: A Novel is a different read than a lot of the police procedurals you come across. It is also incredibly good and very much recommended.

I like police procedurals and this one is unique
One Day You’ll Burn knocked me out. It’s a riveting, richly-layered detective novel that satisfies and surprises on every single page. Joseph Schneider is a major new talent in the world of crime fiction.
Tully Jarsdel joins the gumshoe greats in this whipsmart riff on sunbaked L.A. noir.
One Day You’ll Burn is much more than just an intriguing Hollywood mystery, it’s a captivating character study of a unique academic/historian-turned-police-detective who can’t keep his deep intelligence from bubbling out — often to his own embarrassment and the reader’s delight. Joseph Schneider has created a very appealing character whom readers will definitely want to see more of.
A gruesome and torturous murder was a phenomenal way to open this book up. I was immediately hooked.
I enjoyed that there were stories within the main story. I liked the story of Detective Jarsdel and his interactions with the people around him. It was refreshing being able to see his character develop into a confident and capable cop.
The investigation into the murder of the burned man was very detailed and I loved the surprise criminal. It was very well thought out by the author and I liked being able to follow the investigation with Detective Jarsdel.
The second interwoven investigation into the serial dog killer was also well placed. I thought the author’s perpetrator had a very believable background.
Overall I think that One Day You’ll Burn is a very good thriller that delivers more than the standard gumshoe story line.
LAPD crime drama. Detectives Jarsdel and Morales are new partners assigned to solve a gruesome murder. Aside from the suspense of tracking down the killer, there was also intriguing personal conflicts that kept the story moving.
There were also lots of traffic updates. I feel like if I ever visit LA, I’ll know how to get around and plan extra time to get there. The descriptions of the city and its traffic felt like another character.
The story begins with a mutilated burned corpse found on the grass one morning. It is mistakenly identified, by the witness as a manikin at first until the person realizes it is really a dead body and calls the police. Enter Detective Tully Jersdel; a history buff who utilizes his expert knowledge of history and spiritualism to solve cases. Detective Jersdel is philosophical as he gathers clues from his suspects as well as deal with an unhappy girlfriend. Will he get the culprit on time before he kills again? You will have to read this perfectly fast-paced, intriguing mystery to find out. I loved this book. It has everything the fem fetal, the gun-shoe and hard-boiled detective who is not on the take. It reminded me of all the old film noir I’ve seen from the 30’s and ’40s. Detective Tully Jersdel Is a complex person, the good guy with a lot of baggage like the rest of us. However, he is still a hero when he needs to be. The mystery was an exciting, intricate, puzzle with so many twists and turns which leads to an unexpected, satisfying end. The characters are interesting and three dimensional. I wanted to know more about hem once they were introduced. This is a stunning first novel by this author and I look forward to reading more by this author in the future. I’d like to thank BOOKISHFIRST.COM for a free ARC copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
One Day You’ll Burn is a well written police procedural and one of the starring characters is Hollywood itself. This story simply couldn’t happen anywhere else. The lead detective is a rookie called Tully Jarsdel, who left a background in academia to join the police force. His parents, both academics, completely disapprove of his new career. His partner, Morales, is a senior detective who has risen to his post through a more traditional path. The story starts with friction between the two detectives. There are two cases they are trying to solve. The first, and primary case, is a corpse found burned to death. The other is someone who poisons dogs, the day their owners get married. As they work through these disturbing cases, the detectives relationship evolves to mutual respect. This book is highly suspenseful and moves quickly. It wasn’t long before I reached a point where I could not put it down.
I really liked this book because I Live in the Los Angeles area and so was knowledgeable about the location of this book and the different areas. This book starts out when the police are called to the scene of a murder and Det. Tully Jarsdel and his partner Morales, go to the scene.
The body is found in a part of the city and where the body is laying seems ritualistic to Tully. Morales wants Tully to take the lead with this investigation. These two partners are different as day and night, which makes for an interesting aspect of the book. They are very relatable and yet so different in character. Their beat is Hollywood which makes it even better. There is two different cases that they are investigating, the first the victim they find is baked to death! The other case is a man who kills couple’s dogs while they are off getting married.
I liked this book because there was never a dull moment and it kept my interest, and I hated to put it down. There is a lot of angst between the detectives, and Tully is very intelligent and so knows things that most people would overlook at the scenes.
I gave this book 5 stars and hope to read more by this author!
I do not usually read detective books but I was given an ARC of this book and I really enjoyed it. Detective “Tully” Jarsdel is my new favorite hero and I am looking forward to Book #2 in this series. The book was very well written and I liked the plot and all the action.
A bit of an unusual story
A lot of twist in this one. You have a person from academia tying to succeed in his new carrier of Detective. It isn’t going easy. Not only are parents disappointed that he isn’t following in their footsteps but he is also having a hard time been accepted in the job. A case of resentment of somebody been giving quicker promotion because of his education. Almost everybody seems to want him to fail. The book kept my interest but was slightly put off by the ending which seem to have been rushed and might have been better. Overall I enjoyed the story.
The gritty and weird world of LA pops off the page as Detective Tully Jarsdel and his partner try and track down a killer who killed in a horrific fashion. A body cooked alive and dumped with little to no evidence to go on Tully’s knowledge and out of the box thinking lead them to places they never thought. At the same time try and track down a serial dog killer the dubbed The Dog Catcher.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. it kept me guessing from start to finish with different leads and red herrings I was surprised at the end. There were one or two unanswered question, either my ADD brain didn’t absorb the information or it never answered it, either way it was still a good read. I have been recommending everywhere.
I’m not usually that into trillers or detective books but I really did enjoy this one. I found myself emersed in the story and liked the writing style. I liked the way it was set up and just the way it came together.
The two main characters, Detective Tully and Morales were very entertaining and I thought easily likeable. I loved the way they interacted with each other and the way they handled the situations they found themselves in. Although Tully I think is my favorite all in all.
The cover I thought was a little lacking but you know what they say, don’t judge a book by its cover, which admittedly I have a bad tendency to do. All in all a good read and look forward to more from this author.
Talk about a scene stealer! This book is going to be big. I need more! Lots and lots more. Very well developed characters and background plot filled with intrigue! This series is going places. It snared me in right away and kept me hooked until the very end.
All of the characters are done exceedingly well. The history of Hollywood adds a great backdrop to the overall story. Then there is the plot which offers mystery, suspense, twists and turns, and a touch of romance that keeps you guessing and gripped tight by the story. For a debut novel Mr. Joseph Schneider has set the bar high for all who follow.
The dynamic between the two main characters, Detective Tully Jarsdel and Morales, is great. Their is a unique dynamic between them that just works when it really seems it shouldn’t. I was surprised by the amount of times Morales and Tully made me chuckle.
Aleena at first seemed as though she’d just be a throw away character, not adding substance just a bit of fascination. But I was pleasantly delighted to enjoy her straightforward way of life. Not many authors can pull of a funny, sensual, intelligent academic but here we have Tully and Aleena to enjoy.
I will definitely be reading more from Mr. Joseph Schneider and I’m impatiently waiting to delve back into this interesting world he’s created.
When I first read the premise of Joseph Schneider’s debut novel, “One Day You’ll Burn,” I was excited to delve between the pages of what promised to be a unique and intriguing detective story. However, this raw and gritty depiction of modern-day LA, was short on action and long on historical facts, which slowed the pace considerably, detracting from my overall enjoyment. And while the characters themselves were distinctive and quirky, I didn’t find any of them particularly appealing. So, while the bones of the story pulled me in, unfortunately, the execution made it difficult for me to remain engaged.

really liked it
Read 2 times. Last read February 4, 2020.
This was a great read. It was very original. The characters were well developed and I could picture the story playing out like a movie in my head. One thing I enjoyed the most was how we get a look at LA. Living in a small town with only a few red lights all my life, it’s hard for me to picture what LA life would be like. I would love to go there some day. The cover of the book is gorgeous and is great for a book set in LA.
The two detectives in the book have seen their fair share of heartache and the bad side some humans can have. They’ve also experienced some bad stuff personally in life. This makes them all the better at their job. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read suspenseful crime novels.
If you like shows like Law & Order: SVU or Criminal Minds, then I would pick One Day You’ll Burn up. There are a few POV’s throughout the novel, but the main lead, Detective Tully Jarsdel is a scholar turned detective and he brings a unique analytical edge to the cases he and his partner, Morales, are trying to solve. This one is a bit graphic and violent, in many ways. But the graphic nature of the crimes and the empathy you have for the victims lends to the emotions that make the reader care and want these detectives to solve the case and catch the bad guys. It took a bit for me to truly invest in this story, but once I did I could not stop turning pages. Mystery, thrills, a dash of romance. This was a great first novel, and I can’t wait to read more from this author!
3.5 STARS
Detective Tully Jarsdel is a rather unique character. The son of two dads, he disappointed them terribly when he left his job as a history teacher and became a law enforcement officer, and now a homicide detective. He’s known by his mentor and colleagues as a ‘brain’ as he’s one of the few who have a college degree. He’s a little awkward, a bit of a social misfit .. but the one thing he is really good at is finding the bad guys.
He and his mentor/partner, Morales. are called to the scene of a victim so badly burned that the body doesn’t even look human. He’s been slowly cooked to death .. something no one has seen before.
Tully thinks the placement of the body is key …. but he is a party of one. He and Morales come to loggerheads on how to proceed when there’s no motive, no witnesses, no clues.
Book Blurb: They find themselves dragged into the underbelly of a city notorious for chewing up and spitting out anyone dumb enough to turn their back on survival.
This is a debut novel, showcasing not only the characters, but the competing sides of Los Angeles.. which can be beautiful on one hand, the squalidness on the other. As Tully has a background in history, the book is filled with assorted lectures / information on any number of subjects. There are places that slowed down to a crawl in places and overall, I did not find this particularly thrilling or action packed. The author also exposes the family dynamics and how there is love … but also a bit of anger and disappointment
