Mylas Grey is a private investigator but don’t call him a private detective. That title belongs to his father—not to him. Mylas is the Chief Investigator for Senator Davis Allen, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. His job is to do background investigations for the President’s judicial nominees, and that’s the only kind of investigation he’s interested in doing. But then Lizzie, the … interested in doing.
But then Lizzie, the Senator’s daughter, goes missing from her campus apartment.
And suddenly, just like that, Mylas finds himself back in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri, investigating her disappearance as if he were a run-of-the-mill private detective.
Nothing about the investigation is easy.
Discovering a motive isn’t easy . . .
Lizzie has a reputation for doing the unexpected, and she could have just left town for a few days without telling anyone. On the other hand, she could have done something stupid and gotten herself into serious trouble.
Staying focused on the investigation isn’t easy . . .
When Mylas meets a beautiful photographer at his brother’s church, and she offers to help him find Lizzie, he finds himself getting a little distracted from the investigation—well, maybe more than a little distracted.
Revisiting his past isn’t easy . . .
As Mylas is forced to spend time in his hometown, he begins to question his career choice, his rejection of Christianity, and his failed personal relationships.
Solving the mystery of Lizzie’s disappearance isn’t easy . . .
It gets even more complicated when Mylas learns Lizzie was researching an article for her campus newspaper about a judge with a secret past. Is the judge connected to Lizzie’s disappearance? Did Lizzie’s boyfriend play a role? What about Lizzie’s roommate?
So many suspects. So little time.
Book I in the Mylas Grey Mystery Series is a clean, suspenseful, fast-paced mystery, involving complex relationships, a fledgling romance, and a man’s search for happiness in all the wrong places.
If you enjoy an engaging, multilayered mystery with a vulnerable, endearing hero, someone who will make you cry one minute and laugh the next, you’ll love this book!

This review is for the audible book. This is quite the mystery of what happened to the Senator’s daughter. One day present, the next day missing. Mylas has his hands full figuring out the mystery. The ending was a surprise to me. I’ve not listened to a male voice like Mr. Twitchell. It took a little while for me to get used to it. I am anxious to read the next book in the series. I received a free copy of the audiobook from the author. This is my voluntary review.
I’ve long admired Luana Ehrlich’s books with Titus Ray and set in the Middle East, and the first book in her new series featuring Mylas Grey is a great addition. Mylas is a character that stays with you long after you finish the book. And I love the cover!
I liked Mylas right off the bat. Even though he worked for a senator, he was his own man. I liked that sometimes he asked forgiveness rather than permission. Mylas has a strict code of honor and he doesn’t like to fail. When the book opens, he isn’t anti-Christian and he doesn’t have a beef with God. He simply ignored Him. I don’t have to tell you how that’s going to turn out.
One Day Gone is a classic mystery with a missing person. Ehrlich lays out the clues and if you’re paying attention, you can solve the crime right along with Mylas. To me, what makes this book special is the conversational tone, and how the reader is drawn into the story. It’s like I became a part of the story. The romance doesn’t interfere with the mystery and happens naturally.
If you like mysteries and a little romance with your mystery, I think you’ll love ONE DAY GONE.
One Day Gone (Mylas Grey Mystery #1), my first read from author Luana Ehrlich. Reminiscent of Blair Howard’s Harry Starke books (that’s a compliment to both authors. Well-written and enjoyable, edge-of-your-seat investigative fiction. I was given an Audible copy of this book in January of this year and am voluntarily reading & reviewing it, Narrator Steve Twitchell’s narration made the book fly by. As a believer, I particularly enjoyed the Christian sub-plot I look forward to Two Days Taken: Mylas Grey Mysteries, Book 2. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018)
One Day Gone was such a fantastic listen! This is my first audiobook by this author and in this genre, and I’m pleased to say that I love both and I’ll definitely keep looking for more work by Ms. Ehrlich as well as more Christian Suspense.
I loved the character of Mylas Grey and how he was far from perfect. He’s living his career dream but he’s also had to make some questionable choices in order to get the answers he needed for his investigation. His love for his family really shone through, and he’s definitely blessed to have them. I liked how his background is one of the first things presented to the reader, and then, slowly, the secondary characters are introduced (from his work colleagues to his family and possible love interest).
As for the suspense/mystery, I think it was well done, and really enjoyed getting to see him in action (after having heard so much about how good he was in his job). I also liked that not everything fell neatly into place (making him figure everything out in one day), but rather he faced some challenges and with how to get the next piece of information.
In regards to faith, I liked how everything was presented, especially knowing that Mylas is an unbeliever from the beginning. Thus, I wouldn’t call this book preachy at all, but that’s my own opinion.
Finally, I’d like to say that the narrator did a great job with all the voices. While it took me a bit to get used to this book being in first-person POV, that only lasted a couple of minutes, and then I found myself enjoying this audiobook. I have no complaints in regards to the female voices or anything of the sort. He nailed every single one (seniors, angry judges, teenagers, middle-agers, you name it).
Overall, this is a great Christian Suspense listen/read, and I’ll definitely be checking out more of this author and this series (can’t wait to see how his work relationship with Charlie develops!). ~ 5 stars and completely recommended 🙂
Good, clean mystery! However, it is has a pronounced religious tone especially in the last quarter (the resolution) of the book. I consider myself a religious person, but it seemed a bit forced, and the religious language was awkward.
I good reminder how one life can effect others.
He is a chief investigator who does background checks………. but the Senator’s daughter goes missing and this takes him into uncharted territory. It was a page turner but I don’t want to say more. This was an excellent read.
Easy reading but also intriguing with a mystery to solve.
Once again, Luana Ehrlich’s excellent writing style gives life to an enthralling mystery that I could hardly put down. I have always admired the straightforward, realistic bent of her writing, and this book is no exception. Her details about the inner-workings of the Washington D.C. offices at play make you feel like you are there in the room with the characters, working through the clues and developments as they come. I particularly liked the character of Mylas Grey and his sense of directness and humor. I look forward to reading more mysteries involving Mr. Grey and would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good puzzle to solve. Ms. Ehrlich’s approach to the faith issues covered in the story is relatable and delivered in a though-provoking way. Congratulations on another fine novel.
