She awakened slowly to voices, but one lulled her back to sleep. She woke again, in a strange room and with bruises and punctures on her body. She showered and found food on a tray when she returned to the room. Then she thought back to the last thing she remembered . . .
Rose had nothing to do Friday night, so her hairstylist friend, Donatello, invited her to a fancy party as his date, since his boyfriend was out of town. There were so many of the rich and beautiful people attending. Rose stepped outside to the beach and a beautiful woman commented on the lovely evening. Rose was surprised at her reaction to the woman, drawn to her somehow. The woman, Samantha, invited her to stay after the party so she could read her palm and have her meet her friends. When her male friends joined them on the beach, she was amazed at how handsome they were – and at her physical reaction to them. She actually salivated! The woman moved in close and she felt a sting at her neck as one of the men kissed her. She woke up naked on the beach, unsure what had happened to her. The party had ended. How long had she been unconscious? Had she been drugged? In her mind she heard voices telling her to run for her life – they were coming after her! She ran until she collapsed on the sand and they swarmed over her, biting and draining her of blood until she just gave up the struggle to survive.
So now she was the prisoner of the vampires who abducted her at the party. What happened to Donatello? He would never have left her like that. She went downstairs following the voices she heard. She recognized several of the men from the party, but not the man who appeared to be in charge, Giancarlo. He told her she would never be going home, that she was chosen and would remain there on his private island with them. Her blood chemistry was special and she would forever be bound to them and under their vampire control – or she would die! Then he faded into nothingness right in front of her! She fervently hoped that she had actually had an accident on the way home and this was just a coma-induced nightmare. She was truly terrified.
The first evening of her training would be done by Giancarlo himself. He offered a drink and talked to her in an arrogant way, making light of her terrible ordeal on the beach, inciting her temper. Surprising him, she kicked him with her stilettos, smashed a vase over his head, kicked him in the side and ran. A savage, terrifying, hulking monster knocked her to the veranda tile and attacked her. Its teeth bit her shoulder to the bone. Then it left her and she heard voices around her. They gave her morphine for the pain. Was this what her life would be like? No escape from the monsters? Now she knew a berserker exists inside each one of the vampires, triggered by pain or great answer. If the rest had not subdued the beast, she would have died. Giancarlo had just pronounced a death sentence on her, effective immediately. She had 30 minutes to convince Samantha that she was ready to embrace the life they laid out for her – or that she was ready to die because her temperament would not allow her to accept what they offered. There was no other choice. And even that one might have come too late to matter!
One of the first things the reader will note is that the book is filled with sensation and emotion as the story is revealed. The reader is not just reading words on a page but is actually feeling with all the senses what the character is going through, immersed in their experiences. Characters were challenged with circumstances that allowed their hopes and fears to be revealed to the reader, whether for good or bad! This works to skillfully enhance the sense of mystery and unease. The effect is brilliant! This is the first book in this “Vampires in the Mist” serial and an experience like no other. You won’t want to miss it!
