Ken Follett is an excellent novelist in the historical fiction genre. I have read many of his novels and have enjoyed all of them. This book is different. It is the true story of several businessmen who were stuck and hiding in Iran during the hostage take-over in 1979. These men were not held hostage. They were working for an American company and could not get out of Iran prior to the beginning of the Iranian Revolution. I had never heard this story. The only reason I discovered this book is my brother-in-law was born and raised in Iran. He is now an American citizen and told me about this book when we were having a discussion about the Iranian Revolution. EVery American should know this story. It’s fascinating!!
This is a very intriguing story of Ross Perot. It is not your average bibliography. I highly recommend it.
Never met a Ken Follet book that I didn’t enjoy. He is absolutely one of my most admired writers. He can’t write enough books for me. I can’t wait to read his book three of the Pillars of the Earth Series, my favorite book of all time.
Ken Follett is a great writer. You felt you right with the men who were on a mission to save two of Ross Perot’s employees and going through their ups and downs right with them.
I am buying this book for my son for his birthday.
Love every book Follet writes. Love this one because it’s history I remember reading about but never heard the full horror of the mess in Iran and the 2 men jailed there and not knowing if they would ever go home!
Absolutely enjoyed this book and regretted when it ended. I like Ken Romer and how he delivers a story. This was no exception! Couldn’t put it down and later loaned it to some friends.
It is a most interesting true narrative about a company, its employees, and its founder who went to unimaginable lengths to free two of its employees from a hostile government. This amazing story about Ross Perot and his company written by one of today’s best writers in hard to put down.
A great true story, written by an accomplished novelist, of the effort to rescue American and Iranian employees of Ross Perot’s company who were imprisoned in Iran. The characters are memorable and the story inspiring. It’s a page-turner that will leave you smiling.
This is a story of a true American patriot. This man built his own company and became a billionaire. When his employees were kidnapped in a Middle East country he stepped in to mount a rescue. The American government would not help him. It is a story of loyalty and caring for your employees. He even went into the prison to assure his men that he would get them out.
A wonderful story.
I believe I have read everything Ken Follett has written and would read more, if I could find it. I like historical events when they are written as stories and not like a high school history book. This book is an excellent read. I really did lose sleep because I wanted to finish it. I had a good time.
Loved it!
I am a huge fan of the author but this book dragged on a bit
Follett has a way of putting the reader right in the action and feeling you are in on the plot.
It provide good insight into the actual facts of current history
Almost as good as Pillars of the Earth.
Great book, couldn’t put it down
Liked it – true story.
Filled in lots of gaps in the picture of Iran and American capitalism during that period
This take was spell binding; I couldn’t put it down. It’s a true story but still exceedingly hard to believe. It’s been 40 years but the incompetence of the State Department and the infighting in the Carter administration is hard to take. Putting the politics aside, it’s just an incredibly good yarn.
I liked nothing about this book. It was nothing but a vanity piece for Ross Perot. He must have paid Ken a fortune. I totally enjoy most of his books but skip this one.
