All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed “Black Heart” every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing. Phillip … Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him.
But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.

On Wings of Devotion by Roseanna M. White – I just reallyreallyreally love this series!! This is smart, beautifully-crafted, Christian fiction at its best! Some books have villains that are really easy to hate, but Roseanna White makes you see the humanity in every person in her book. You know a book gets to you when you want a redemption arc even for bad guys! Happy Reading!
I’m at a loss for words at how much I loved this book it was exceptional in every way. The setting, the main characters, the cameo appearances of characters from past series, the heartwarming spiritual theme, the pace of the book, and the way Roseanna crafted a glorious novel. The Codebreaker series is quickly becoming my favorite series of all time. I adore the female characters who are not ashamed of living authentically in a time period where society expected them to live a different lifestyle. In this book I also found of the the best romantic counterparts to the main character. Phillip Camden is the epitome of swoon worthy despite all his struggles.
I’m now immediately off to purchase the next book in the series because I’m impatient to see what the next one brings!
On Wings of Devotion is set in London during WWI, and much like NoL is largely centered around the Old Admiralty Building at White Hall. The London setting allows readers to be treated to a handful of appearances from characters in White’s previous books, specifically Margot and Barclay. Unsurprisingly, White does a lovely job at bringing wartime London to life on paper.
Arabelle Denler, one of the MC’s of On Wings of Devotion, is amazing. I’ll admit, at times she seems almost too kind, but she truly is a wonderful person: strong in her dependence on God, wonderfully real and actively fighting against bitterness and anger. Ara loses the things she cares most about, first her mom, later her fiancé, and many other dreams, and she is still able to trust God and keep moving forward.
Camden, Philip Camden, what to say about him…….He is easily one of my top favorites of Roseanna M. White’s male characters. He is angry, very angry, at the world and most importantly himself. Camden is also deeply loyal and loving, his love for his siblings and mother was wonderful. Camden undergoes a great deal of growth throughout On Wings of Devotion and it was perfectly lovely to experience.
Moving on to a slightly more, let’s say, interesting character, Diellza Mettler. Dee, in a way the villainess of the story, is capable, deceitful and quite fierce. The fact that Dee was an award winning markswoman was wonderfully intriguing, and I was honestly disappointed her gun was never used. My one complaint about Dee, is simply her motivation: her love for Alvin Webber and her belief in his flimsy promises. Although it seemed as though, in the end, Alvin truly did love Dee, it simply wasn’t the motivation I would have chosen.
The code-breaking thread was much lighter in On Wings of Devotion than it is in NoL. Despite the fact that Camden still works in Room 40, it simply wasn’t as central of a piece of the story. One bright spot in Room 40 was the introduction of the mysterious Zivon Marin (I cannot wait to read his story!).
All in all, On Wings of Devotion is a wonderful book full of wonderful (and decidedly not wonderful) characters. This book is easily one of my favorites of White’s books and all historical fiction books.
A grounded fighter pilot, an heiress turned nurse, and father obsessed with adventure… On Wings of Devotion features a cast of characters that you can’t help but cheer for.
The second book in The Codebreakers Series, we first met our reluctant hero, Philip Camden in the previous book, The Number of Love. Accused of killing his entire squadron, Philip faces a possible court martial and execution by firing squad. He forms an unlikely friendship with nurse Arabelle Denler and she works to help prove his innocence.
This WWI romance is fun, witty, and a must-read for fans of Roseanna M White. Don’t read this expecting a comprehensive history lesson on 1918 war torn Britain, or an ‘edge of your seat’ spy thriller with mastermind antagonists. What you’ll find in this book is an unlikely love story between two broken people that will keep you turning pages late into the night.
Definitely one that I’ll be rereading in the future!
Characters with such depth and human flaws draw the reader into the lives of secrets, schemes, and mysterious plots during war time. All is not as it seems. Yet, love is able to seep through the seams and shine as true and sure, but only after trials and problems.
The first book in The Codebreakers series by Roseanna M. White was my favorite book of 2019, and one of my favorite historical romance novels to date, so going into book two I was equal parts trepidation and excitement.
Now having read “On Wings of Devotion,” I am left with no recourse but to beg White’s forgiveness for ever doubting the skill of her mighty pen! For not only was the plot intriguing and the setting of WWI London expertly depicted, but the multifaceted characters of Arabelle and Phillip managed to capture my heart in the same manner as Margot and Drake—COMPLETELY.
Don’t walk, dearies. Hasten thee to yonder book merchant and GET. THIS. BOOK! The Codebreakers series is not to be missed.
I loved this book! The characters, as usual for Roseanna White, are one-of-a-kind, robust, passionate people with flaws and strengths that make them utterly human. In this novel, the hero and heroine seem like polar opposites at first but they end up being the perfect match. Arabelle Denler has a strong moral compass and faith but isn’t pretentious or judgmental. Phillip Camden, nicknamed Black Heart, is angry and riddled with guilt but tender toward those he wants to protect. The scene where he has his come-to-Jesus moment is one of the most powerful scenes I’ve ever read of this kind. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. White has drawn deep spiritual transformation and biblical truths without being preachy or off-putting.
On Wings of Devotion has plenty of plot but it’s the characters who drive the story. Fans of inspirational historical romance should not miss it, or any of the books in this series.
Roseanna White has quickly become one of my favorite historical fiction authors. This was one of those books that I couldn’t wait to finish, yet didn’t want it to end!
Ok, wow. This book was seriously amazing!
I loved the main characters from the start – the refreshing way they were so unapologetically honest with each other, their wit, their hearts and the way they both passionately stood for what they believed in. But what had me totally captivated was the journey they took. The depth of the themes explored through their stories. Wow. There were a few moments in particular where I had to stop and give my heart a chance to catch up.
I’m not usually a fan of books set in war times (usually going out of my way to avoid them altogether!) but Roseanna White has a way of pulling me so far into the story and the characters’ lives that I forget I hate war stories… Something that totally happened in this book. It was also really fun to catch up with characters from previous books/series. Absolutely brilliant.
ON WINGS OF DEVOTION is an excellent book. I enjoyed the mention and involvement of some characters from the previous book in this series as well as the Shadows Over England series. Arabelle Denler is a nurse at a London hospital. Though an heiress, she’s a nurse because she wants to help people, a Christian of deep faith and generous spirit. Ara is easy to like. Major Philip Camden is labeled Black Heart by the press because he was assumed to be the cause of the death of the rest of his squadron. Carrying much guilt, he doesn’t do much to persuade anyone to think differently. The author does a masterful job of letting us see Cam through Ara’s eyes, through the bitterness to the true man who was hurting and needed the Lord. More intrigue is added by a spy for the Germans. This is a well researched historical novel set in 1918 England. I highly recommend it.
I did read this book and I apologize for it being late but life happens!
I will start by saying that I absolutely hate that name Black Heart. Just because things happen no one deserves that ugly name. .But Philip Camden ended up wearing that name.
In my opinion since it’s a war they were fighting anything can happen and whether Philip did it intentionally remains to be seen.
This is where Grace and Healing come into play. And we can’t leave out forgiveness. But that is the hard part.
Roseanna really does a great job with this story! She kept my attention throughout the whole book.
I enjoy how she puts her characters through their paces and I found myself rooting for them the whole time.
I love her stories so I was really excited to read this one and she didn’t disappoint! I think this the best one so far!
The characters are wonderful and so is the plot!
This is a story that will keep you riveted to your seat reading to see what happens next!
Oh and we can’t forget the little mystery that was woven in throughout the story.
I didn’t really relate to these characters but then, you don’t have to to enjoy a great story! I was even able to imagine myself alongside Arabella and her co workers helping to treat their patients.
Arabella is part of the Codebreakers.
I loved the chemistry between these two and things escalated from there if you know what I mean.
I didn’t want to say Goodbye either!
Highly recommend.
My thanks to Bethany House/Netgalley for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
On Wings of Devotion by Roseanne White
Another winner! I don’t know how Roseanna White keeps coming up with these great stories, but she does. On Wings of Devotion, picks up where the Number of Love ended. Major Phillip Camden, Black-heart, has been working with the code breakers and Arabelle Denler, an wealthy heiress, is working as a nurse. When their paths cross, the fireworks begin. The chemistry between them is very swoon worthy. I love all of the twists and turns in this story. The characters are wonderful. The history of World War II is so intriguing. The facts and fiction are interwoven so well together. Also the introduction of Lily and Zivon, for the 3rd book, sound very interesting! This book is categorized as a Christian, Historical romance. It is 5 star book, in my opinion. Bring on The Portrait of Loyalty
“He’d remember that scene for the rest of his life, he was sure. Looking up and seeing her standing there, his wings flashing on her dress. Declaring her devotion better than words could ever do.”
Wings of Devotion is the second book in the Codebreakers series. I struggled with reading the first book in the series, The Number of Love, and honestly could not finish it. Since Ms. White is a new author to me, I gave the second book a chance, and I had a hard time putting it down. It is an absolute page-turner and works extremely well as a stand-alone read. Wings of Devotion, set in London in 1918 during World War 1, is the well-crafted story of Arabelle Denler, an heiress and devoted nurse with a “brightness to her spirit”, and Phillip Camden dubbed “Black Heart”, a grounded Royal Flying Corps pilot now working as a cryptographer for British Intelligence. Deemed a villain by the press for his alleged responsibility for the death of all the other pilots in his squadron during a mission, Phillip is living a life full of guilt, anger, and bitterness. Arabelle deals with feelings of abandonment and inadequacy lamenting “I am just not enough.” Their initial tie is through an incident between Phillip’s sister, Cass, and Arabelle’s fiancé, Edmund Braxton; and the sweet love story progresses at a steady pace from there eclipsed at times by danger, espionage, threats, scandal, misunderstandings, and betrayal. Bits of humor and fun banter sprinkled throughout enhance the story. Ms. White does an outstanding job of blending real-life historical events into the fictional narrative, and the characters primary and secondary are well developed and memorable. I especially liked how the faith element permeates the story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the third book in the series, A Portrait of Loyalty due to release in September.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via netgalley but am under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

I really like this book. There was a lot of mystery involved. Phillip is running away from what happened to his squadron and also from God. He is a very disliked man and he does everything he can to be disliked. Arabelle is a nurse who sees him walk by her window every day. When she meets him, she seems to look into his very soul and see the hurting man that he is. As the story unfolds, we learn more about what really happened to his squadron. Also, about the spies at work in England.
I would recommend this book to all mystery buffs who like romance thrown in.
I was given this book by Bethany House Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
A thousand times better than the first book in the series. I loved the characters. They were realistic and relatable. This story was intriguing, and the plot wove together perfectly.
I don’t even know how to talk about this book without incoherently gushing. It was INCREDIBLE.
This was my first Roseanna White book and I was blown away. The character development was done so well. The plot was brilliant. The truth of Jesus bringing and being Life was handled so beautifully. And the romance?
All the tears. All the heart eyes. All the stars. This is how it’s done, folks.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. All expressed opinions belong to me.
What a book! Roseanna M. White has done it once more with another amazing story. From the very beginning you are sucked in, unable to break away.
Arabelle and Camden… where do I even begin? Roseanna writes in such a way you can’t help but fall in love with her characters. The depth to all of them. I wanted to be best friends with Arabelle, she is such an amazing person and so inspiring. I found myself reflecting on my own life while reading their story. I want to be just as forgiving, just as good as Arabelle. And getting to know more about Camden was a wonderful journey.
The Faith content Roseanna puts in her books is fantastic. And the humor! I just loved all of Arabelle’s and Camden’s witty comments. So many good quotes from this story!
Getting to know more about the people who worked in Room 40 was great. I love all the history Roseanna puts in her books. Though it wasn’t as strong in this story as in her others, it was there. The details she adds makes it feel like you are really there.
The mystery element was intriguing and kept you guessing as to what was going to happen next? What were they planning?
As you can tell I loved this faith filled story, showing forgiveness and second chances. It inspired you to have a deeper prayer life with God. To draw from His strength and not count on your own.
I could not put this book down. It is 381 pages long and I read all but the last 80 pages in one day. In one sitting. It was just so good.
I received this book for my honest review.
Author Roseanna M. White has written yet another story that will absolutely not disappoint her readers. Once again this story is about a the intriguing codebreaking team, that we previously met in book one in this series. Set in WWI England, this story is packed with ongoing threats, adventure, and danger, but is also filled with sweet romance. White weaves her story in such a way that readers will quickly and completely fall into this fabulous story, as well as become engaged and attached to the characters. This is another powerful and entrancing excellently written historical WWI romance that readers will love!

Another wonderful story by Roseanna M. White. On Wings of Devotion is the second book in The Codebreakers series and definitely worth reading if you love inspirational historical romance.
Major Phillip Camden and Arabelle Denler find themselves thrown together unexpectedly while having to deal with family circumstances that have a major plot twist. It isn’t all bad because Arabelle feels she is being led to play a part in his healing and maybe in doing so she can find healing herself.
I’m looking forward to reading more books in this great series in the future!
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
I haven’t finished this book yet but these characters have reached out to my empathetic nature especially Phillip. Who does not like a tortured, complex hero? Phillip is like a bulldozer when he is committed to something. His interactions with his brother is hilarious. Arabella is a great match for him. I love when she told him he defines himself but what he isn’t.
