Blow after blow, she hides her face and fights for her life.
Doctor Ruth Burnette has everything she has ever dreamed possible: the perfect job, a twin sister who is her best friend, and a fiancé who is retiring from professional boxing as the middleweight champion of the world.
Then came that fateful night when she witnessed a mafia execution. When her sister is murdered she knows she’ll battle … knows she’ll battle to the last round and never, ever throw in the towel. Now she’s down for the count, in witness protection, anxious, alone except for the faithful company of her German Shepherd at her side.
As the time draws near to when she has to leave her safe little corner she stays on her toes. She has to testify against one of the darkest criminals in New York, she shores up the courage to face the accused from the witness stand. Unexpectedly, he’s not the one who worries her. She wonders what coming face-to-face with his son, VICTOR KOVALEV…her former fiancé …will bring.
Will Ruth have a fighting chance against the Kovalev family, or will Victor keep her pinned ON THE ROPES?

Loved this book! It was mystery and suspense all the way through, trying to figure out who was trustworthy and who was not. Not all things were as they seemed and I really enjoyed trying to figure out just what had really happened as the story progressed. I spent a good bit of time biting my nails as the story played out. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say that I loved Ruth and her courage to stand against something so sinister. The entire story was well done and I absolutely loved the underlying love story. The epilogue was sweet, delicious icing on the cake!
A gripping story of intrigue and the very real and continuing history of man, greed, depravity and the power of the gospel to rescue and redeem. A novel that is contemporary in content and should motivate the reader to consider how to combat the ongoing problem of human trafficking. I recommend this story and research and involvement!!
This story really took me all over the place in emotions. I thoroughly enjoyed the roller-coaster ride. Such suspense, uncertainity, hard things to read but so real in its presentation. Glad I have not had the same encounters with some very evil people as our heroine had. Highly recommend. I received a free copy from the author. This is my honest, voluntary review.
I got this novella free by signing up for Hallee’s newsletter, and liked it. I’m not crazy about stories that go from the past to present back and forth, so in the beginning, I thought I might not finish. But that aspect of the book doesn’t last long, so I’m glad I stuck it out. I’m weary of the formulaic big-publisher-fare, so it’s refreshing to read an author in a small press. Hallee’s character Victor in this book is heroic! He demonstrates the fruit we can look for in a life that is truly surrendered to Christ.
On the Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman
Book goes from present to the past and you learn just who the characters are. She is now in witsec and must testify to put some away in jail forever.
Her sister has died already because of what she saw and she was relocated to keep her safe. She listens to her ex fiancee while he is also in court to testify and she learns so many new things about him and his life.
His family is the Russian mob although he was not but he’s also there to turn states evidence and he hopes they can get away from it all at the end, living together….
Lots of action, travel and information about their jobs, he a fighter and her a doctor. Really enjoyed this book as I have the others from the author that I’ve read. Hope to read more.

Received this review copy from the author when you sign up for her newsletter and this is my honest opinion.
On the Ropes by Hallee Bridgeman is a page turner, fast-paced action, suspense and longer than most novellas (thank goodness). Twins that are both doctors (residents), one is murdered, a fiance who is a professional boxer and the son of a crime boss. What did one of the twins witness? Murder, witness protection, non-stop suspense. The author will snag your attention right away and not let go. I don’t normally like novellas (just not long enough & they leave too much unsaid) but not in this book. I honestly can say “This is the best novella I’ve read”.
I’ve read other books by Halle and she doesn’t disappoint, no matter the genre’. She has become one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend anything by Hallee Bridgeman.
