RykerWren! Great Story & Audible Listen
On His Six
Away From Keyboard Series, Book 3
By: Patricia D. Eddy
Narrated by: Aiden Snow, Grace Grant
Wow, this is one great suspenseful romance. It is well written and well told, it grabbed not only my attention but my heart right from the start. The original storylines are interesting, some are deep, others are intense and took me to the edge of my seat. The characters are complex and well developed. My heart went out to Ryker as soon as I learned what he went thru. The author’s descriptive telling of his hell was realistic and heart wrenching. It is not a wonder Ryker is who he is, broken, not worthy of anything good and unable to let anyone in. Ryker has unresolved issues with Dax, the only surviving member of his team. He heads to Chicago with hopes of setting things straight with him. When Wren, a computer geek/hacker who works for Dax’s company runs in to Ryker again, they start to talk and she tells him she is looking for help to solve brother’s death, which she refuses to believe was an accident. The investigation uncovers a crime ring across the world. I loved these two together, they were so good for each other, she got thru the barrier around his heart and started to humanize him and he grounded her and curbed her anxiety. They worked well together too, he was a bad ass special forces op, she behind the scenes until all goes FUBAR. This is an action packed story, plenty of drama, twists, mystery, suspense and a nice build up to a great romance. Patricia D. Eddy, thank you for this great story and the emotional rollercoaster ride.
I listened to the Audible edition, Aiden Snow and Grace Grant are fantastic narrators and voice performers. They brought these characters to life, giving each their own voice and personality, as well as heart and attitude. I loved Aiden Snow’s take on Ryker, alpha badass, Grace Grant’s take on Wren was great too. The accents covered were great too. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen

I love tortured heroes.
I struggle with romantic suspense. There’s so much I don’t like about the category, and yet…that’s where so many of the awesome, tortured, scarred alpha heroes live. And sometimes they’re GRUMPY, tortured, scarred alpha heroes…and those are my kryptonite. It’s the eternal struggle. Sigh. What’s a girl to do?
Well, in this case, just like in so many other romantic suspense novels I’ve read, I loved the grumpy, tortured, scarred alpha hero, and hated the heroine he’d been paired with. If I could fix Ryker up with a heroine from a different book, this would’ve been a 5-star read. But since I’m stuck with Wren, this one’s only getting 3.5 stars.
Here’s what worked and earned the book it’s stars:
1. Ryker is sexy and tortured and kind of broken, but he still functions in a high-stakes, high-stress job, and he still cares about his team of former military badasses. And while he’s alpha, he’s never a bossy, jerkish alphahole. He’s just an all around good guy.
2. Dax, a secondary character in this book is SUPER interesting and I’d most likely read a story about him. Inara was a pretty cool badass, as well. I’ll probably take a look at her story, too.
3. The pacing was good, and the action scenes were sufficiently…action-y.
4. The story was gritty without being so graphic that I was scarred for life. I appreciated the balance that was required to accomplish that.
5. The writing itself is strong, I think. It’s compelling and engaging and held my interest to the end.
Now for what didn’t work:
1. Wren is supposedly some kind of hacker genius, but I didn’t get to see a lot of what she could do. She mostly spent her time a) needing to be rescued, and b) popping Xanax like they were Tic Tacs.
2. For the sake of argument, let’s say that the Russian mob is after me and wants me dead. If the big scary former military badass who is protecting me tells me it’d be safer if I stayed in the house, I’d stay in the house. No questions asked. No WAY would I argue with him, insist I can take of myself, and go out on the town. I think you can probably guess which option Wren, our intrepid heroine, chose. Yep. She went out and got herself kidnapped, beaten, and drugged.
3. And as if the FIRST time she didn’t listen to Ryker wasn’t lesson enough, Wren throws herself into danger A SECOND TIME towards the end of the book and requires rescuing yet again. At that point, I was kind of hoping Ryker and his team would just declare her a lost cause and let the bad guys have her.
4. Ryker is almost 7 feet tall. Really? How in the hell is a guy that huge supposed to function in clandestine military ops? I’m thinking his size would be a HUGE impediment.
5. Ryker has been through horrific torture and is understandably a little reluctant to chat about his past. (Or anything else, for that matter. He’s a quiet dude, OK?) Wren is constantly harping on him to “let her in.” Every time she pushed him to spill his guts to her, I wanted to reach through my Kindle and smack the crap out of her. He just met you 2 days ago and you expect him to completely open his heart to you? Really? Ease up there, stalker chick. Give the dude some space.
6. There’s no way around it: this is a case of instalove. (Completely inexplicable instalove, in my opinion. Ryker can do better.)
So, long-story-short, with a different heroine, this could’ve been a 5-star read. But Wren’s an anchor around the book’s neck. It’s a shame, really. Ryker had such potential…

Just as good as Dax’s story!!!!!!!!
On His Six
Away From Keyboard Series, Book 3
By: Patricia D. Eddy
Narrated by: Aiden Snow, Grace Grant
I listen to a lot of romantic suspense, and Patricia Eddy continually remains as one of my favorite listens. This third book of the Away From Keyboard series is gripping from the first scene and had me is chaos for the entire listen. I could not wait to hear what was going to happen! We get to know Ryker. He is a former green beret and has been through more than anyone should experience. When he meets Wren and hears her story, he is both attracted to her and wants to help her. Wren is a talented hacker, but needs the expertise and strength of strategic warriors. With the Russians at the ready, these two, along with help from their friends, West, Dax and Inara go in search of a woman. There are a few things I really love about the way Eddy writes. Her characters are flawed. Wren suffers from anxiety disorder and rather than gloss over it, she deals with it realistically. Ryker has his own personal issues and they are dealt with head on. There is no nonsense and it’s refreshing to have an author attack subjects like that. If you enjoy thrilling suspense, action packed scenes, strong characters and steamy passion, this book and this series is for you.
And with all that being said, the narration is exquisite. Aiden Snow’s raspy, deep voice brought the Ryker to life. His performance exuded the pain and guilt he carried and made you feel compassion for him. Grace Grant makes Wren such an incredibly strong opponent with a voice full of confidence for her trade, and also a sound of understanding and love. This team brought the story to life and kept it thrilling and passionate.

Loved it. Going to read the rest of the series. 🙂
On His Six is another incredibly good read by Patricia D. Eddy, the third book of the excellent Away From Keyboard Series. It’s a gritty romantic suspense story with edge of your seat action. There is a powerful connection between Ryder and Wren and their emotional story had me from page one. I couldn’t put it down.
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book.
On His Sex is an action packed page turner that had me captivated from the start. Ryker is a former Special Forces who has both physical and mental injuries. Wren is a computer genius who is trying to find answers about her brother’s death. These two together make a great team. This book has it all drama, suspense, action danger and a perfect romance. This was my first book in this series and I can’t wait to read the first two books.
I received a copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I chose to review it. An awesome book. This is the first book I have read by this author but it will not be the last. This book is well written. This is not a quick easy read, please give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this one. I don’t do spoilers but there is suspense, action and love in this book. I encourage you to get this book, I think you will enjoy it!!!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. OMG. This one literally blew my mind. Suspense from the first chapters all the way till the end. Ryker, almost broken beyond repair and Wren, broken as Well but in a very different way. They make the perfect couple. The writing-style is just amazing – like you’re right there with them. The relationship between the two of them as it develops from noting to all they ever wanted but never thought they’d have. Rykers character is just what he is – pure power. I can’t wait for Dax’s story!!
Ryker’s offer to help Wren may just be what they both need.
This is my 7th book by Patricia and I love an author who writes in dual point of view. Ryker has survived hell as a captive and still struggles with leaving Dax behind when he escaped. Ryker forces himself not to care about anyone and only provides single word answers for conversations. Avoiding his friends wedding, he heads to Boston to see Dax and runs into Wren who doesn’t accept the apparent suicide of her brother. The two go undercover in Russia to rescue Wren’s brother’s love and her brother. Ryker and Wren each provide something to the other to settle their fears. But will the case destroy their new found relationship? You have to read to find out and won’t want to put the book down.
Realizing how beautiful broken can be…
In the first two book in this series we were given peeks at Ry. In this story we find out just exactly what he endured while held by the enemy. Those atrocities have shaped Ry into the man he is just as much as the scars they left. It also left him with lots of guilt. The teams last mission has only added to that guilt. Ry is not he time to “talk” to people or let them in until he meets his “little bird”. There is something about Wren that makes Ry want to tell her everything. When these two join forces to keep a promise made by Wren’s brother, both will end up facing their fears and demons. Along the way the true meaning of “family” will be discovered. I honestly think this may be the best story in the series.
*I received an Advance Reader’s Copy of this book via Hidden Gems which I am voluntarily reviewing*
This story is heartbreaking. It’s intense. It’s an emotional roller coaster.
This book had a bit of everything, action, military, a tortured hero and romance.
The secondary characters are great, they add a lot to the plot and story.
Really loved it and highly recommend it. Cant wait to read more from Ms Eddy
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems
As a fan of Eddy and this particular series I have been not so patiently waiting for this book. But, oh my, wait the wait worth it. This book met and shattered every single expectation I had and more. Ryker is so tortured and broken, in every sense of the those words, physically, mentally, and soul deep. Wren is delightfully quirky and much stronger than she knows. Her struggle through anxiety and haunts from the past have molded her into what I can only describe as fragile on the outside but strong as steel on the inside. Together they fill in the gaps, holes, and previously impenetrable spaces in the other and finally finding the safe space where they can finally show who they are. Yes, broken is beautiful because we all are in some ways even if less extreme than our beloved family in this series. The rebuilding and recognizing of self which allows for the acceptance of the other is perfect. I love how Eddy creates characters that do not depend on the other to fix them but to allow the love and strength the other gives as a catapult to delve into the often painful struggle of facing ones own demons. These two have plenty of demons, apart and together, but together they show the strength that they can overcome. Eddy’s writing and stories show the best of the human spirit to love and overcome even during the hardest and grittiest of life’s experiences and that is real but yet poetically beautiful at once. I cannot recommend this book and all of Eddy’s books enough. Her writing is clean and concise and storytelling such that you lose yourself into worlds of pain, redemption, and love.
Wren and Ryker have each other’s backs but do they also have each other’s hearts? Ryker survived unthinkable torture in that Afghan prison, but the bubble his mind created to survive has no dissipated. He keeps everyone at further than arm’s length until Wren. Wren knows there is so much more to her brother death than meets the eye. He swore he was clean and Wren believed him. On the hunt for answers she stumbles quite literally in to Ryker. He’s offered his help, but trusting a man she can’t get close to is dangerous not only to her mission but also her heart.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book
You’ll get sucked in from the first chapter.
You will get pulled in to this story and it will be hard to let go. Was such a good read that I read it in one sitting while telling my husband I had a headache and leave alone…heehee.
I was skeptical going in as it’s the 3rd installment, but I shouldn’t have, it can be read as a captivating standalone.
Be prepared to wish it never ends.
Loved it! Another great read by Patricia Eddy.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the third book in the series Breaking His Code. We met Ryker in Book One and saw him again in Book Two. This takes place after the events of Book Two, but can be read as a standalone. Ryker survived being held captive in Afghanistan. His whole team died except for Dax, who lost his sight. Dax has tried to be friends with Ryker but has given up. Ryker goes to see him to try and makes thing right, when he meets Wren. Wren has some issues of her own. When those issues threaten her life, Ryker offers to help her and protect her. This is another compelling story from this author, who seems to be able to really understand the issues faced by our wounded military men and women.
What a world-wind of a book! I loved this book, as soon as I started reading it I did not what to put it down. I have not read the other 2 books in this series, I felt I lost a little of the background of the other characters by not reading their books but not enough to detract me from this book. Ry is a man with a very hard past to over. Wren is the perfect woman to help him with that. A lot happens when they first meet but I think that helps to bring them closer together. I did find it hilarious every time Wren swore as she doesn’t swear like a normal person. I loved all the people in this book and want to read more.
Tthe first chapter of this Patricia D. Eddy book is heart stopping, brutal and intense but it sets up the rest of the book perfectly. Ryker McCabe’s hell is gut wrenching but it gives us insight into his torment, feelings and behavior. The action in this book is fast paced and explosive and so finely detailed that the reader feels part of the scene. There is beautiful poignancy in the love between Ryker and Wren.
Ryker McCabe is damaged physically, mentally and to the bottom depths of his soul. But his little bird, Wren Kane sees him, scars and all and sees the goodness in his soul. Ryker grounds Wren in a way she’s never had before. When they find their “hope” the rest falls into place. They are a love story for the ages.
As a big fan of sexy military/romantic suspense books, I’ve grown to be more selective, always looking for that next book or series that really grabs hold of me and won’t let go. I can tell you that after reading On His Six and realizing that this was a whole series, I had to go back and buy the other books, I was so hooked! Ryker and Wren are both so horrifically broken, almost to the brink of no return, but yet, fate brought them together and awakened the sleeping heart in both of them. There was beauty even in their ugly pasts. This book made me stop, really stop, to visualize each scene that was so vividly written. I saw through Ryker’s eyes the torture he endured. I saw all of Wren and Z’s troubles. The whole cast of characters made me sit up and take notice, and I really need their stories. I haven’t even read Dax’s story yet, and I’m already in love with him too. This is an absolutely fantastic series that I highly recommend!
