On His Six is book three in the Away From Keyboard series by Patricia D. Eddy. You can definitely read this as a stand alone. I have not read any of the previous books in this series. There are characters from the previous books that are recurring and it is obvious that they have a history with the Hero but it does not detract at all from this story.
I have to admit I wasn’t prepared for my reaction to this book. I was amazed by it! This is a romantic suspense and let me assure you, suspenseful it is. But there is also a love story here that melted my heart. These are two damaged people that never expected to find love. You can safely say it was the furthest thing from their minds. But you know what happens when you are least expecting it!
Ryker McCabe is ex-special forces. He now lives in Boston and runs his own agency. Six years ago, Ryker and his unit were captured. He spent fifteen months in a prison deep in the mountains. Fifteen months being tortured, beaten and starved. But he never gave them what they wanted. He never broke. After his escape, he has spent the last six years isolating himself except for when they are working. He believes himself to be a monster with all of his scars. He has walls upon walls built up. After an operation gone wrong, Ry needs to get away. Maybe it’s time to finally face his past. To visit the only other survivor from six years ago. The man he has shut out of his life because he couldn’t face him.
Wren Kane lives in Seattle. She works for the man that Ryker is on his way to see as a computer hacker. Wren’s brother is missing. When his body is found pumped full of drugs, Wren knows that he didn’t do it himself. Her brother promised her that he was clean now and he never would break a promise. Her boss refuses to help her look into it.
Wren and Ryker literally crash into each other’s worlds. Wren needs help and for some reason, Ryker feels compelled to help her. He certainly didn’t realize what he was getting himself into. Wren’s brother was involved with one of the most dangerous Russian drug lords known, Kolya Yegorovich.
“Something about this woman calls to me. Begs me to be…better.”
Wren’s brother left her a message that led to an unfulfilled promise he made to someone being held by the Russian, Kolya. Wren needs to fulfill her brother’s wishes and avenge his death. Hidden in a safe house in the most dangerous of situations, though, both Ryker and Wren find something beautiful, they find each other. When Wren looks at Ry, she doesn’t see a scarred monster, she sees a man with a heart and a soul that she has somehow taken possession of. For the first time in six years, Ry doesn’t have nightmares, he feels peace. Now all they have to do is get out of this alive.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know how to do this.”
“Do what?”
“Care.”
“You’ll learn.”
This book was amazing. I was afraid it was going to be too dark for me. But it wasn’t at all. It was definitely suspenseful. My heart was beating out of my chest so many times. But it was also full of hope. These two finally had hope that they had found love. That they could share their life with the only person they had ever wanted to let in. But there is a lot that they have to get through first. Just a warning. Once you start this book, be prepared to keep reading. Because you aren’t going to be able to put it down. I’m so glad I read this and I can’t wait to see what this author is doing next!
“My little bird. My angel. My everything. She saved me from my own demons, and now, I’ll do whatever I can to banish hers.”
One of the most heart wrenching, deep in my soul, profound suspense romances I have read. These two were so beautifully broken they thought they were beyond repair…little did they know they were beautifully broken for each other.
This is the third book in the Away From Keyboard Series. The whole Series is great! All stories can be listened as a standalone, but believe me, you don’t want to miss one of them. This great Romantic Suspense/Dark Military Romance is really well written. Ryker and Wren’s story is breathtaking, heartbreaking, sexy, suspenseful, fast-paced, twisted, and totally captivating. Ryker, a former special forces, is a broken man. Wren, a hacker, is a beautiful, and strong woman, who struggles with anxiety disorders. They share a strong, and hot chemistry. The Epilogue is wonderful. I totally recommend this audiobook. Aidan Snow and Grace Grant did an amazing job with the narration. Now, I can’t wait for Dax’s story. I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Ryker and Wren’s story was amazing. My heart hurt for Ryker and all he had been through but I loved how Wren could see through his pain and to the real him and brought him out of his shell. Wren was tenacious, loyal, and loving. The action kept me on the edge of my seat and was very entertaining.
Talk about gripped from the start!!! Straight into an intense chapter which sets you up for the rest of the book!!. It’s got great charcter build and background set up. It’s got everything you want tension action sex and a connection between the characters which you could actually feel!!! I definitely recommend this book.!!!
Definitely a dark story with many potential “trigger” scenes but, it is a well written suspenseful romance. This is the third in the series and it took me a couple of chapters to connect the characters obviously from the previous books but, it did not diminish Wren and Ryker’s story. I especially like when self professed broken characters find solace, peace and love in spite of themselves. It really lightens the feelings you experience while reading the tormented tales of struggling souls trapped by evil.
I was intrigued by Ryker in the previous book and this did not disappoint. This is a slow burn with the steam and romance you crave, but also the action and suspense you need. Wren and Ryker are explosive and found each other at just the right time.
Enjoyed Wren and Ryker’s story!
This series was amazing. I couldn’t stop reading it! I loved every minute of it! This series grabs you and doesn’t let go. I read them a few months back and I still think about it.
I received a free advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I wasn’t aware that this was part of a larger series until after I finished the book, so it can easily be read as standalone. This was the first book I read from this author, and definitely not the last. I was drawn in by the way she describes the shattered relationships of our characters – how Ry is unable to confide in the team he feels he let down, how Wren is unable to reconcile the thought of a broken promise to her lost brother, how broken people can find beauty in learning to be themselves.
At no point did I feel that the story dragged on, it begins with Wren’s missing brother and quickly delves into searching for him and the dark, twisted world he got caught up in. The give-and-take we see as Wren and Ry navigate the search and themselves makes for a suspenseful yet satisfying romance. This is definitely well worth the read.
Each time I read a book by this author, it is a wild adventure and I love it. This book has everything from intensity to heartfelt romance. The descriptive storyline of mystery, corruption and love are well written and I loved all of it. Thanks too the author for wonderful reading.
Absolutely the most emotional, painful beautifully written book. Omg. It captured every emotion. Love Ryker and Wren and the demons they fault. Wow. You literally have to read this book. Words will never be enough. When I finished I was so emotionally drained but in a beautiful way.
I voluntarily reviewed this advance reader copy of this book.
Couldn’t put it down, great characters
This was a tale about a relationship that was being developed between 2 broken people. I didn’t mind the concept but very slow reading.
It was a great book to read
Loved this book. Cannot wait to read others in the series. Stayed up late to finish it. Awesome story and characters.
Both characters in this book will knock your ssocks off. I loved this story and rest of the series is crazy good.
Beautifully written. Filled with adrenaline pounding action. Ryker is has lots of demons in his past that haunt him. Wren has a problem that needs solving now. The two meet first by accident but find that they are just what each other need for healing. The author takes us on a raw journey of self discovery and healing. It is a tough road but in the end it is all worth it.
Beautiful and broken. I love this series! Wren and Ryker – what a love story – but so much more. This is a suspenseful read and it had me on the edge of my seat. 5 stars is not enough!
Love the series. If you don’t have a strong stomach you don’t need to read this. There’s a lot of action, death, promises and HEA. I really feal for Ryker and all he went thru. Can’t imagine all the pain and torture he went thru.
