Confession time – I do not like reality TV shows. Look, I’m old enough to remember watching the very first season of Real World on MTV when I was in high school and the current iterations are beyond ridiculous to me. That said, for some bizarre reason – I really like books that use them as a backdrop. I guess because authors, unlike actual show producers, are looking for a happily ever after.
I spotted Omega Mine on Leta Blake’s twitter and jumped on it. She unabashedly advertises this as a fluffy romance with an oblivious bear shifter and that’s what it is. This stand alone was an easy read with two completely opposite characters (another favorite trope of mine). The shifter aspect is used to set up the story and the reason for participating in the show – but I didn’t feel it was actually a huge part of the story. I’m fine either way and it didn’t detract for me.
Hank is a grumpy older bear shifter who needs to find a mate to calm his Alpha-senses so that he doesn’t become a danger to others. Evan is a free-spirited professor who responds to all the show contrived chaos with equanimity. There’s an age gap of Hank being in his 40’s and Evan in his 30’s, and while both are bisexual everything is M/M (no ménage or cheating). There’s a lot of laughs, a tiny bit of drama, and a strong friends-to-lovers feel to it despite the short amount of time the MC’s know each other. Overall a wonderful curl up on the couch weekend read for me.
This book is surprising at every turn. The Alpha shifters looking for their Omega soulmate, on a reality TV show is so revealing. Yes, the Alphas use their skills to maintain control, but their shifter sides aren’t the focus of this book. The interaction between the men & women as…just being their true selves is the focus. The characters are alive, you will come to see them as friends. The setting is vibrant. The Alpha/Omega dynamic is unusual. Here the Omega fated for the Alpha is able to calm his Alpha powers enough that the Alpha doesn’t get lost, zone out, and become a danger to himself and those around him. It isn’t about sex, although sex plays a role in the claiming. If you’re looking for wall to wall sex, it isn’t here. I will say, I did Not miss it. The entire book is like the sweetest foreplay leading to an explosive finale.
This is Hank and Evan’s story. Hank is a cop who fears he will get lost while on the job and hurt a lot of people. This TV show is his last chance to find his Omega, his soulmate, before age and circumstance overtake him. Evan has wanted to be Hank’s omega for a long time. He helps Hank through the ins and out of the filming and interacting with the others. Hank is grateful for Evan’s help. He just doesn’t realize the Omega he’s looking for is right under his nose. Hank never thought of looking for a male Omega. Evan couldn’t think of anyone else. It takes a fit of jealousy to wake Hank up. Once you wake the bear, all bets are off! You are going to love this book. You will cheer Hank on in his quest. You will yell at him to wake up and see that Evan is right there. In short, reality TV. Grab this book.
