Olivia wants the 80 acres in far off Michigan that her father’s will left to whichever of his offspring claims the land. As Olivia says, “I’m sprung off him just as much as Avis or Tobey.”
The problem: she’s 17, female, and it’s 1841.
Mourning Free, Olivia’s trusted childhood friend, knows how to run a farm and is also sorely in need of a new start in life.
The problem: though born in a free … though born in a free state, he’s the orphaned son of runaway slaves and the slave catchers who patrol the north hunting fugitives are not particular about who they take back south with them.
Not without qualms, they set off together. All goes well, despite the drudgery of survival in an isolated log cabin. Incapable of acknowledging her feelings for Mourning, Olivia thinks her biggest problem is her unrequited romantic interest in their young neighbor.
Until her world falls apart.
Strong-willed, vulnerable, and compassionate, Olivia is a compelling protagonist on a journey to find a way to do the right thing in a world in which so much is wrong.

One of my favorite books. Just purchased the next book in the series.
I loved this book, but was chagrined to learn that any sequels were a Kindle based/Amazon books that weren’t available for me on my nook.
Left you hanging. Slow moving
left you hanging at the end
Absolutely captivating.
Keeps your interest, unusual events, unexpected ending
Liked the characters and truly didn’t expect what unfolded.
I liked it so much I bought and am reading all the sequels. Excellent read!
Interesting, but I’m tired of books about another era that try to cover current issues such as strong women, interracial relationships. It would be a good read if the subject matter weren’t so hackneyed.
And by the wAy, you have to buy or borrow the second volume to learn of the color of the child.
That brings my rating down another notch.
I enjoyed the book, missed the fact it was a series which turned me off. Not to happy at the end ( lack of the end) I will stop as I prefer a stand-alone
Really enjoyed the excellent writing and character development.
A unique storyline with enough twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued, even when the action slows. Portrays two very different sides of our nation’s history
This story was so original and I did not want it to end. So different from the fairytale historical romances that I usually am drawn to. Will definitely read the rest of the series.
Very moving, well-written and original. I have to continue this series; I must know what happens in the lives of these characters.
This was an original theme for me and read the entire book but the characters just weren’t there! Sorry!
Highly original with ethical and social issues Written about a time and situation we know little about. can’t wait to read the next one!
Book about settling of country during pioneer times. Didn’t like ending which led into the next book.
A good book although would have preferred it not being a series. Still enjoyed it a lot.
Kept my interest and was a good Family drama.
Loved this book. The characters are original , good story.
The book explored concepts which are always discussed.
