This is a sweet story from a child’s perspective about moving. I highly recommend it for anyone who is relocating with young children.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Oliver’s Moving Day is a cute children’s book about a little boy and his family making a huge move from the Big City to the Country. Oliver was excited, but didn’t know what to to expect, and his mom and dad wouldn’t tell him about his new home. So Oliver had to do a lot of wondering and waiting during their moving day and the ride to find The Country!!
This is a really neat book for children to read. And especially if your family is one that will be moving. It would help your small children understand that moving can be a good thing. And by reading this book and look at the Fabulous illustrations, your child can learn a lot from this book. And if you are not moving and want a fun book to read to your little ones, this would be a great choice for you!

Moving can be a really big deal for anyone, but it can be an especially scary experience for kids. This story follows little Oliver as he describes new sites and discovers new environments. If your family is planning a big move, this book a good place to start to spark discussion with your littles. It helps them to see that it’s normal to have conflicting emotions and helps them begin to process them along with providing a basis for some of the questions they may have. The illustrations fell short because they were too simple and needed more detail. I think the book itself should have also been stretched to include more pictures. It would provide for more opportunities for interaction and engagement while reading. The story itself was a good conversation-starter.

The book is a nice story about a young boy who moves from the city to the country. You can feel his excitement as the big truck is loaded up. I liked how he traveled down the road with his family saying goodbye to friends and familiar places. It can difficult for a child to move away. This book is one that parents can read with their children and look at the pictures. I did want a little better visual because at times the text didn’t match the pages. The pictures were very simple and really didn’t pop off the pages. The story is good but I think less words and more detail to pictures would make this book better.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This is such a cute book for children. We live in the country on a farm with lots and lots of animals and tons of fun so my kids thought it was fun seeing another child experience some of the country for the first time.
My son will be four at the end of this week and he loves all things trucks and cars so he loved the moving truck picture on the cover. He also really enjoyed this book and has had us read it over and over and over as young children often do.
This is a fun book that doesn’t get annoying the more you read it. That’s a plus in my book and makes it one I can recommend you get for your little ones. We love reading in our house and I’m always searching for more good books to add to our shelves.

Five year old Oliver is moving to the country but he isn’t quite sure what the country is. All he knows is that his toys have been put in boxes that are leaving on a big yellow truck and he and his parents are taking a trip in their car. Oliver’s Moving Day is a short, illustrated story filled with the thoughts and questions that a 5 year old boy might have as he sees things he’s never seen and there are colorful pictures to enhance the story. The text is probably too hard for most beginner readers to read themselves so this would be a perfect book for parents and children to read together and discuss. Oliver’s Moving Day is a great way to reassure children who are experiencing changes in their own lives.
I received a copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit but there was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own opinions.
Oliver’s Moving Day is a cute book, designed to help a small child understand moving.
I liked how the author, Vicky Sluiter, told of the changes from the city to the country and from a multi-rise home to a single-family large home. Oliver’s wonder at the country home being all theirs was so cute.
The story is short. The book consists of 24 pages. Half of the pages are pictures and half of the pages are text. There’s nothing to indicate the ages it will appeal to; however, I feel young children would enjoy having it read to them. Because there are a lot of words, older children would enjoy reading it aloud or to themselves.
I received Oliver’s Moving Day from Celebrate Lit. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.
There are not many picture books that help ease the transition to a new house for little kids. Just seeing the process can be comforting. We hear that Oliver’s toys are packed into the large yellow moving van to go to his new home. That is an important thing for young children to realize that they will see their toys again.
My toddler loved this book. He asked me to read it multiple times. My daughter, almost in third grade, is too old for this book in her estimation but listened. My son loved the large yellow moving van.
I really like that Oliver’s Moving Day is not too long. There are only twelve pages to read, each with its own picture, just the right length for short attention spans like mine. All the scenes are essential without added fluff.
I love that we see Oliver’s emotions too regarding the change in scenery. There are no friends left behind in the story though and no certainty about new ones so if that is important to your child you may need to discuss this scenario together.
This story flows well. It could benefit from breaking up paragraphs for children who read it themselves. It’s a cute story!
Oliver’s Moving Day could provide help for children…
*moving to a new home (obviously)
*have a hard time with change in general
*needing to learn to wait for something to happen
*who have never been to a large city (the countryside) to see some of the differences
I received a free advanced reader copy of this book. All opinions are completely my own and my children’s.
