1769.Young Harry McGann is forced to flee Ireland for the unknown shores of America. On that voyage he meets Elizabeth Bartlett, who seems as far beyond his reach as the stars which guide him across the Atlantic. Through the years that follow, Harry finds himself involved in the formation of the American Navy. It is a world of intrigue, violence and untold dangers at sea.But always the memory of … sea.
But always the memory of Elizabeth is there … and their paths are destined to cross again and again.

This book couldn’t decide if it was going to be a history of the Revolutionary War’s onset, navy, and diplomacy; a partial biography of Jon Paul Jones; a technical guide to sailing tallships in war; or a romance between Harry McGann and Elizabeth Bartlett. Set between 1771 and 1794, the book tried to be all things but didn’t do any of them particularly well. While the detailed explanations in the book would please some, the book was not a good choice for me.
Did not finish it.
It reminded me of the first episode of Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman. There is one after another “thrilling adventures” that did not hold my attention. Unusual reaction for me. I began to wonder if the book would ever end. I finally closed the book.
I am torn about this book. In many ways it deserves a fifth star for great historical fiction story-telling. The carefully documented plot winds through the career of John Paul Jones and the fledgling United States navy in the Revolutionary war. the cameo appearance of Benjamin Franklin in France was well done. However, the book has a distracting preoccupation of explicitly described sex scenes. This seems contrived and overdone. Five stars for the plot, three stars for the overdone sex thread. Make it four on average
It’s a good read, reminds me of historical fiction from the time before bodice-rippers were considered historical fiction. This is a good story, and shows the reader a lot of real history. It could use some professional editing, which is why I gave it four instead of five stars.
What a well conceived story. Incredible characters with great depth & wonderful relationships. Adds a nice slant to a tumultuous time in history.
There were scenes that were a bit too graphic for my enjoyment…the premise of the story was interesting.
insight into the individuals who fought the naval battles of the American war of independence held this reader’s attention and provided interesting aspects of the naval participation.
Great story and wonderful links to our naval history.
Very good historical fiction.
Actually I liked it so much I went and got the rest of the series.
The story line could have been interesting, but the foul language made it impossible to read.
It has the feel of a historical novel.
Exciting historical fiction at the time of American independence.
Learn a bit of history
It’s a good tale written around an important historical period that draws you in and ends the way you would like it to.
If you like seafaring tales, you’ll like this one!
Long
Such great characters, not feeling as if reading the unreal. This is a family of men, they loved and lost everything because they loved too much But great sailors and fighters on the water. The 1st book 5 star, 2nd was 3.5, 3rd, have not finished 4. I was up all night finishing one and finishing another. These are just so interesting, land, home, love and sea….fighting for their beliefs
Must read the entire series
Some of the characters leave the story too fast but good story
