This book hooked me from the beginning! Jane is an older woman with much sadness in her life. Brian is a young man that is attracted to Jane the moment he sees her. This was a good read and take on the older woman/younger man trope. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley and am leaving a review.
Old Enough is an exciting and passionate story of love, attraction and passion between two people who are very different and come from completely opposite backgrounds, but feel an undeniable connection. Brian is twenty years old and has too many responsibilities for a young man his age. He takes care of his mother and sister after his father abandoned them and works anywhere he can, in order to pay for his studies and support his family. Jane is a woman who has dedicated her life to her husband and daughter. After her husband asks her for a divorce she finds herself alone, trying to cope with financial problems, a demanding job and a teenage daughter. When their paths cross, they feel an undeniable attraction, but their friends and society have a different opinion. Will they be able to defy the rules or will their past actions separate them? I love Charmaine Paul’s books and I can’t wait for Young Enough, the second part of The Age Between Us duology!
Having read Ms. Pauls’ Loan Shark Duet, I was not sure what to expect from this new duology. It definitely is not as dark as Loan Shark but it has elements of despair and brought out the anger in me over the injustices in these two people’s lives. Brian is definitely an old soul who had to grow up too early and is more responsible than anyone I know that is his age. What can I say about Jane except that I cannot help but feel sorry for her and her circumstance. I do want to shake her a bit and say “WTH? Stand up to these people”. But when Jane and Brian get together, hot off the charts chemistry. I love how he takes cares of her and is not worried about their age difference. I was reading along and the ending blew me away. Secrets will do you in every time. Cannot wait for the next installment.
I received a complimentary copy from the author.
Old Enough was my first read by Charmaine Pauls.
I requested an ARC from the publisher because I rarely had the opportunity to read OW/YM books but the few times I did I chose luckily and found great authors and memorable stories of this sub-genre.
I also rarely give more than 3 stars if a book ends in a cliffhanger but this time I felt it definitely deserved more. The writing was very good, the characters were three dimensional and very much life-like.
It was kind of an exotic read for me as the story was placed in Pretoria. I always appreciate a unique setting, it is a plus in my book. I liked how the author portrayed the differences in social status through the characters. These only added a layer to the OW/YM setup as this was yet another hurdle to overcome by the hero and the heroine besides the considerable age difference.
For the most part I felt sorry for Jane. Technically everyone in her life was – and has been – using her. She just forgot to live, only merely existed after losing her love more than a decade ago. It was heartbreaking to read. I hated her spineless cheating husband and his mistress too. I also hated her so-called best friend who wasn’t considering Jane’s feelings and was also a backstabbing bitch in my opinion. Jane did show signs of revival though and I was glad. Without the possibility of her developing and growing to a stronger self this story would have been only a struggling read about a good-for-nothing doormat.
Brian’s intentions weren’t the purest. Not by a longshot. I liked that the story is written in dual POVs so I knew from the get go why and how Brian got interested in Jane, why his conscience wasn’t clean. The impending doom was there in between the lines of their every encounter and this also added to the ever present tension. His intention aside Brian was a likeable character. Having to take care of his mother and little sister made him grow up very soon. Add to that the less than ideal circumstances of his neighborhood, where he has to be on his guard every minute of every day, trying to keep a precarious balance to keep his family somewhat safe.
He is an old soul in a young and delectable body. I liked his calm demeanor very much.
Jane and Brian had off the charts chemistry. Their sexual encounters awoke new depths, “long ago buried” or “never been there” feelings in both of them.
This first book was a great lead-up to the conclusion of the story in book 2. There are heavy secrets to be revealed both from past and present. A lot of issues to overcome. I can only hope Jane’s reviving heart will survive every hit still to come.
All in all I liked this book and will surely read the next.
I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley
I loved this story. There is a 20 plus age difference between the main characters. But they are soul mates. They would get through one hurdle and yet another appears. Ms. Pauls kept me on my toes throughout the story. It’s beautifully written. I could not put it down… that’s why I am at work with 2 hours of sleep!!!
This is Book 1 of The Age Between Us duet. Featuring Jane, an older woman, and Brian, a younger man. He is young but is an old soul and is so mature and full of wisdom. This book was not anything like I thought it would be. It’s a great read that was well written with complex characters and a captivating story. Very emotional and moving with a lot of depth. There is a cliffhanger and the final book will be out in August. Lots of secrets and twists but a great read that I read as an advance reader copy and voluntarily chose to review.
Old Enough by Charmaine Pauls is book one in The Age Between Us series. This is the story of Brian and Jane. Jane just got confronted by her husband saying that he is leaving her and pursuing a relationship with a women he worked with and now loves. Jane of course is shocked and surprised that he would leave her after 12 years of marriage.
Brian who will be 20 in 8 months has struggled to care for his family and really is older that his physical age through experience. Brian needing money for his little sister takes a ‘job’ that sets in motion a secret that may end up ruining something he didn’t know he wanted.
I am usually not the old woman / younger man romance reader but this book makes me want to read more of them. Really enjoyed it and can’t wait for the next installment in their story!
This story was captivating from the very beginning and I honestly finished it in one sitting. I absolutely loved Brian’s character and for him to be on the young side, he sure acts more mature than half of the adults in this story. I enjoyed Jane’s character although I wish she was stronger, especially when it came to Francois, Debbie and yes even Abby. I wanted Jane to stand her ground and not give up everything so easily. I hope in the next book she fights for what is hers and what she deserves. Lindy and her father Monkey needs to get in a car and ride off somewhere, anywhere but in the next story. Yes, I know its wishful thinking on my end. Lindy, Monkey, Francois and Debbie along with a few more characters can disappear for all I care; I dislike quite a few of them. This story ends with a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more and I can’t wait to see how everything plays out. I’m excited to see if things will go the way I think they will or if I will be completely shocked by everything. No matter what, I’m left wanting more and I can’t wait to read the next book. This book is perfect for readers looking for a read that’s captivating, has a bit of suspense along with parts that will make you laugh and scenes that will make you blush. I truly enjoyed it.
Five tantalizing stars! This book will set your body, heart and soul on fire.
¡Santo cielo! Charmaine Pauls has literally ruined me beyond repair with this book. Old Enough is FORBIDDEN and deliciously HOT. It blew my dirty mind far away leaving me breathless and eager for more. This book is within the line between what is good and what is bad. It is pure and sinful and so taboo! From the first page, I suspected I was going to lose my mind over this book. Charmaine’s writing is darkly smart, elegantly addictive and flawless. There is not greatest pleasure than reading her books because they have the power to leave you panting and wanting more.
Love has many shapes and colours that nothing can take away its purity. It doesn’t distinguish by skin colour, sex or age. Love is a unique. It is the one thing that differentiates us from animals (although sometimes some animals show their love better than a human being). Old enough is a rough journey of wild feelings and hot attraction between two souls who are in different stages in life.
Brian and Jane’s story is sizzling scandalous, vicious, and perversely dirty. The age difference between them is improper according to society standards. She is older than him and being together is a dangerous game with capital letters. Brian will slowly seduce her and tempt her until she becomes his. Because form the first time he laid his eyes on her, she was his. Their meeting was wickedly arranged by a strange man in a suit although fate sealed their future.
This book sparks with sexual tension. It pours decadent passion. Old Enough set my body and soul on fire. It is delicious and all-consuming. I was possessed. This story is raw as it is thrilling, as fitting as it is forbidden! In one word: it is PERFECT.
Charmaine pulls you into the story with a BREATHLESS INTENSITY where you can’t stop devouring her words until the last page. Sharp, twisty complex and blisteringly witty. She penned a story that will leave you aching for more…
This time I won’t say the typical “I highly recommend you this book”… No. I DARE YOU TO READ IT because it is worth all the stars in the galaxy! I can’t wait to read the conclusion of this duet. I am sure it will be EPIC.
Note to the author: I wonder where I can find my own Brian… because he is hot AF. He is temptation personified. He is the WHOLE PACKAGE ladies! His personality lit my body and oh I did fall for him… so hard and fast. And I still am falling. Thanks Charmaine for creating the ultimate book boyfriend that has ruined me in the best way possible.
In the name of the hot Deity in the universe…Old Enough is everything you want in a taboo read. Its gritty. Its super hot. OMG massive age differences, older woman and younger man. Its passionate. All the lust you want in real life. And the angst!
My first read from this author and slayed me from the first chapter.
I have to say i have nothing oppose older woman and younger man. Although personally i couldn’t find younger man appeals. But Bryan…oh lawwwd who turn off the fan hereee!
That boy man is mighty fiiine! I might drool a lot while reading this book but you would never know the truth
Bryan…he may not even twenty but this boy man…his an old soul. The author put a perfect background for why Bryan is so mature for his age. Love how he take control in his relationship with Jane. I forgot his waay much younger. This fine specimen is that kinda man you want in real life!
And Jane…i am livid for her! That sorry excuse un worty wet tissues called him self husband is just….gaaah! How dare he! Betrayel, heart break…Jane is being Ms. Too nice for too long. Her so called besties are nothing but judgemental b*** and ex husband mistress is just asking for karma.
OMG this author making me crazy. She sucks me in her story so easily. I think i’m in love with her from this first read. Excited to read the second book
Well, well well, what a surprise this was.
So after previously deciding against ARC reading this; as well if I’m honest as much as I love age gap romances they don’t really work for me when its a younger man older women.
I know double standard and all, buts that’s just the way I roll.
I can only think of one instance when the above trope has worked for me; a story by Carian cole so I usually avoid younger man romances like the plague.
But after reading a small taster of the first couple chapters the author sent my way I was actually extremely intrigued here and after much internal deliberation decided to give “The Age Between Us” Duo a whirl.
I already knew I liked this author as have read previous works of hers and really enjoyed them but was still a bit apprehensive as this is not usually my thing.
Well bloody hell!! really taken aback here; this was absolutely brilliant in every way that counts.
That’s not to say I am going to go out and read all the Y/M books out there I’m, not a convert or anything, far from it but this is definitely my exception to the rule.
This book ticked all my boxes on every level.
It raised the bar and then some.
It wove such an intricate web easily pulling me into the addictive storyline.
I don’t think I have any criticisms here with “Old Enough” except it ended too soon.
I liked Jane very much but it was Brian who stole the show for me I adored him.
His maturity was way over the usual nineteen-year-olds.
His upbringing and background bringing such a maturity of character to the table; he seemed so very self-aware and also responsible with the added obligation of his mother and sister.
He’s all about his family and making things easier for them.
And his confidence in his own sexuality well it was bloody red-hot its no wonder Jane couldn’t hold out shes only human and Brian may be the younger of the two but he’s a man in all the ways that count and that included taking charge; He likes to be the one in control.
And while this does mainly concentrate on the connection being forged between Jane and Brian.
There was also a lot of underlying storylines being intertwined such as how these two originally were brought together and issues Brian has going on with the local gang boss.
This seemed to be mostly about building the trust but I’m expecting everything to implode dramatically in book two with all the story threads connecting, can’t wait.
So “Old Enough” has some really diverse characters all so different.
And while I adored some others were complete jerks.
I hated Janes Ex-Husband and his new flavour; but also felt that Jane needed to go nuclear on their butts.
She’s been a bit of a doormat in her past and now her present and there not surprisingly taking the pee.
I’m hoping they get there comeuppance very soon.
I also didn’t like Janes friend she was a grade A Biotch; there’s telling it as it is and then there’s backstabbing besties, shes reeks of the latter in my opinion and is no friend to Jane.
I hope Karma comes and stabs her in the eye.
Also Janes daughter; well shes a bit of a selfish brat but she has been taught it’s all about her so you can hardly blame the girl; I really felt for Jane when she seemed to be losing out with Abby but I would have gone postal at the blatant disregard my Ex had for my role as mother here; just saying.
So I’m really looking forward to the next book here like jumping up and down with such anticipation.
I have a feeling things are really going to come to a head, it’s going to be epic I hope.
I really can’t recommend this enough so please don’t be put off by the age gap here; I’m so glad I put aside my preconceptions and gave this a chance or I would have missed this bloody fantastic read.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of “Old Enough (The Age Between Us, #1)” of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions are entirely my own.

5 STARS JUST ISN’T ENOUGH FOR Old Enough
“The devil wears many disguises. His favorite is the one of lover, because it’s so effective.”
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK! THE MOOD, SETTING, PLOT, CHARACTERS…
THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!!!!! I’m so much in AWE I really don’t know where to begin with this review so bear with me as I could very well go off on a number of tangents!
Oh the FEELS this book brought out of me! Charmaine Pauls is a brilliant writer who creates these layered characters you become completely head over heels in love with, and emotionally attached to. I feel for Jane! I love Brian! I hate anyone who stands in their way of achieving happiness, and it seems like the stakes are set against this taboo love affair. What makes it so taboo? Well, Jane is old enough to be Brian’s mother, and the layers keep getting added as their relationship becomes more complex and intertwined!
I really want to lament about how this book took me on this emotional roller coaster! I am still reeling from Jane’s tumultuous life as she is forced to take the back seat in each of her relationships. She is constantly put second by those who are supposed to love and value her! I was so sad for Jane as each person in her life made her their “last pick”! You could feel Jane’s despair as one person after another disappoints her, and the resolve she has to hold her head up and keep on moving, is unbelievable. This is what I absolutely love about the author’s writing, Ms. Pauls draws you into her world and you’re not just invested with her characters (to clarify, Brian and Jane) and empathize with them, you actually carry their emotional burdens with each page turned. I was devastated when I finished book one because I want Jane to have some semblance of happiness and joy and not just be “content” with what life has thrown at her.
The one part of Jane’s life that is actually fulfilling is that with her hawt-young-thang, Brian, who adores, ravishes and worships the ground Jane walks on.
Perfect right?
Not exactly…
The stars that aligned these two together weren’t exactly designed by some benevolent force. Brian is in Jane’s life for a reason and the motives are far from sweet, romantic destiny. You’ll get all this when you read the opening pages of Old Enough. I love the way this story unfolds, the plot so tactfully put together, that you immediately pay attention to all the details to pick apart whatever clues are dropped along the way.
While Jane’s life falls apart, Brian is exactly the distraction she needs to help her confront her suppressed sexual desire. The taboo push-pull nature of Jane’s relationship to Brian stokes the flames and Jane is caught between wanting to remain demure and fulfilling her supressed erotic fantasies.
How could I let him go so far? I’m an idiot. I’m a slut. Oh, dear God, I’m a cougar.
[…]
We’re a mess. An awful, beautiful, arousing mess.
Brian may be 20+ years her junior but he is a man who knows what he wants and has the ambition to go after it, and HE WANTS Jane. Brian helps Jane let go of the last bit of emotional attachment she has for Francois and anything material that came with it. Brian is the right kind of therapy Jane needs to unleash her suppressed desires after losing her first love. The process is so gut wrenching and hawt all at the same time!
Old Enough is the kind of book that stays with you even after days and weeks have gone by. I have a whole lot to say about Jane’s ex-husband Francois and his new Gf Debs, daughter Abby, BFF Loretta, and would-have-been mother-in-law Dorothy, unfortunately they would all be spoilers so I’ll keep my lips sealed. Though, I will say that these people around Jane don’t seem to be genuine or truly care for her well-being. It’s like an ambush! One thing after another happens to Jane that unravels her stability but their actions are always excused by them claiming it’s in her best interest!
WHATEVER!!!!
Brian’s network is no better, everyone who surrounds him seems to want to dig their claws in and keep him from doing better for himself. Meanwhile, the reader just takes it all in thinking Brian and Jane just can’t catch a break! But I love the way these two have the most SMOKEN-HAWT CHEMISTRY EVER!!!!
What will happen to these two in book two? Will there OW/YM relationship work or are the odds too stacked against them?
MAKE THIS YOUT NEXT HOT-n-SEXY SUMMER READ! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
The book doesn’t end on a huge cliff-hanger but it is pretty DRAMA, and I can’t say enough that I can’t wait for book two!!!!
I was kindly provided an ARC for an honest review. All opinions shared here are my own.
AUGUST CAN’T COME SOON ENOUGH FOR BOOK TWO YOUNG ENOUGH!
Old enough to love this book!
My first time reading Charmaine’s books was the Dubious/Consent duet, & I loved them! Dark, dirty & spellbinding! I was excited to see she had a new book, & I was not disappointed in Old Enough. It was taboo (my first time reading an OW/YM tale) & dirty, which I loved. I loved the world building, the storyline & the main character of Brian. I want a Brian of my own! I hope Jane (the main female character) stands up for herself more in Young Enough, but the author made me understand where she was coming from in this book. I look forward to Young Enough!
I’m truly in love with Charmaine Pauls’ storytelling. It’s beautiful, mature, and deep.
She got me hooked with her The Age Between Us duet teaser —> http://bit.ly/2zCy68v and instantly, I wanted to know more!!
Jane’s carefully-built life just fell apart when she meets Brian. Their first interaction is not as accidental as she may believe. It quickly develops into this intense, sensual and taboo relationship. A forbidden affair that is decadent and awakens something deep in both of them. I was completely lost in this book. Feeling everything radiating off the pages as the story unfolds.
“This is a thousand shades of jaded. I should say something to break the pending disaster, something to pretend our cognizance hasn’t shifted. I should at least give him a way out.”
Sweet baby Jesus, the chemistry between these two is enough to cause a fire.
They both come from very different backgrounds. Jane is sophisticated, well off, and older. Brian is wise beyond his years as life forced him to grow up quickly in a bad part of town. If they could stay in their decadent and sexy bubble, life would be perfection.
There’s a lot more to this story than just the complications of their age gap. With a douche ex and an outside force adding a boulder of troubles onto Brian’s shoulders, I honestly have no clue how this will all turn out.
The bubble is barely intact as secrets and lies slowly unfold.
“For a moment, our eyes lock. Time stands still as our bodies rage underneath and on top of one another. His regard simmers with something dark and profound, a message I instinctively know I need to decipher, but fail to understand. Whatever is hidden in those turbulent pools is vital. It’s a key to a secret. All I need to do is reach out and snatch it, but it’s like a word stuck on the tip of my tongue.”
Charmaine Pauls delivered an addictive and brilliant first half of a story and I can’t wait to see how it will all play out as so many different elements are in motion at the end of book 1.
Luckily book 2 is coming next month and all the mystery will be solved!! More Brian and Jane, please!!!!
Bloody Hell! Who is this man and where do I sign up??? I am panting after Brian like a horny little teenager and I am Jane’s age! My libido has been kicked into overdrive with this book!
Charmaine Pauls has enamored me with this story. Old Enough is totally tasteful and subtly taboo. It involves a relationship that is socially frowned upon, but Pauls approaches it elegantly and provides you with a polished and pleasurable read! And weeoooo the magnitude of the hot sex rocks a 10 on the richter scale!
This story is an unconventional romance that is passionate and tender with copious amounts of chemistry that is impulsive and uninhibited.
Jane is a cultured woman with a respectable social stature. She finds herself in the middle of a divorce and fighting to remain the woman and mother she thought she needed to be. Brian barges into her life, not so unintentionally. He is dominating, unabashedly self assured, and authoritative. Brian is mature for his age but does not have the life experience behind him. Decisions made in regards to his secrets displays that adolescence. But he is not the only one hiding something. Jane’s past is shrouded and has an undisclosed mystery surrounding her first love’s brother. I think things are about to get a whole lot messy and complicated.
Charmaine leaves you with a fortune teller’s ominous last words……
~ The worst is yet to come. ~
Such an evil torture inflicted upon the reader! She assures me that the second book, Young Enough, is not far behind. I just hope I have enough strength to haul my ass up back up from the cliff when it lands on my kindle
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
She’s older than he is, but Brian doesn’t care. Meeting Jane was the best thing that every happened to him, even it was supposed to be a set up and a quick way to earn some much needed cash.
I knew this book was first person, present tense going in and I *thought* it would help me, but **insert wailing** it didn’t!
Oh! Don’t get me wrong! It’s a bloody good book, a GREAT book!
Brian meeting Jane and everything that happens after is well told from both their points of view. The plot moves along at an even pace. Not everything is revealed at once, it comes along in dribs and drabs, to enable you to process that little tit-bit, before the next one comes and grabs you.
Brian makes no apologies for who he is, or where he came from, or how he got there. Once his mind was made up that he wants Jane, and not just as a quick f**k, he goes all out to get here. Jane too, once she begins to let Brian in, she goes all out and takes what he gives her.
It has planted itself firmly on the “fan yourself, its a hot one” shelf! Brian is young and he wants Jane in every which way he can. And he does! But the best bit, for me, was when Brian decides to make love to Jane, rather than just bang her up against the wall. That surprised him, I think, the connection he could get from Jane doing that. Loved that!
The cliff hanger I was expecting doesn’t happen here, although there is a cliff hanger ending. But what THAT means is, what I expected to happen here, will come in book two! I will read it, because I want to know how this is all going to go down!
I just **insert sigh** can’t get past the present tense thing! It pains me, deeply! Because I LOVE Ms Pauls work!
4 stars
**same worded review will appear elsewhere**
**Kindly receive an ARC of Old Enough from the publisher by way of NetGalley for an honest review, no compensations given.**
This was the first book I have read by Charmaine Pauls. I was very intrigued by the synopsis and after reading Ms. Pauls bio I knew I just couldn’t pass on reading this book. I am so glad that I took the chance. This book was so different, the twist of the older woman and younger man, I loved it! I really enjoyed the author’s style of writing, and the attention to character development was spot on.
This is Jane and Brian’s story. I immediately fell in love with Jane, how could I not, she has both a tragic and courageous side to her. I was amazed how Ms. Paules was able to develop Brian’s character, who is only nineteen, into a strong, dominant but also caring man. The way these two characters meet was definitely out of the ordinary, a bit of a twist there. The author also did a great job in developing the secondary characters some of which I liked and wanted to hug and some I really wanted to slap.. Right.. Across.. The.. Face!!! You will have to decide for yourself on that account. I also enjoyed all the conflict between the characters in this book.
The story was both detailed and fast paced, with deceit, lies and everything in between and that kept me turning the pages and reading well into the night. There was also some interesting plot twists that I didn’t see coming. Some of the storylines were sad, but the way in which the characters dealt with these issues had me admiring them even more. The romance that develop between Jane and Brian was spectacularly written. Loved the forbidden romance and the erotic scenes were panty melting. I honestly could not put this book down. There is a cliffhanger, and I will be insane till the end of August when the next book is published. The saving grace is I know it will be another outstanding read, so worth the wait. Old Enough is NOT a book that you should pass up. Happy reading.

My, my, my! Old Enough by Charmaine Pauls was not at all what I was expecting, it was a whole lot more!
I don’t want to ruin the story, but I will say that from the beginning I was hook on Brian and Jane’s romance. I thought that this was going to be a quick and erotic story. What I got was a super erotic, highly involved story that was so much more than what meets the eye. And because I am a weirdo, I was super excited that there was a cliffhanger because that means there is more coming and I cannot wait!
This was my first book by Ms. Pauls and I was not disappointed. The story flowed well and kept me intrigued all the way to the end. Age ain’t nothing but a number, pick this hot as sin book up ASAP!
Ever read something that sticks with you for a while after you’ve read it? It describes this book perfectly. I was little skeptical about the taboo factor in this book. Not that I don’t love taboo. I just don’t normally like it this way. I won’t go into too much detail. As i don’t want to spoil it for the reader. But reading this book captured a fantasy I had no idea I had. It was raw, it was hot and I simply cannot wait for the next book. The characters were perfect for each other. They brought the story to life. This author has a knack for telling a story and I’m so glad I took a chance on this book. – By Vanessa
I really don’t prefer OW/YM romances. This one was riveting. This was a steamy, hot read! Why the four stars? I just got overwhelmed by all the opposition and conflict in this story. I really want to read what happens in book 2. I recommend it to readers. It was a very entertaining read. So nice to see a hero that actually cares and is not a jerk.
