Daniel Kilcannon, the veterinarian known as the Dogfather, has been widowed for four years. He’s spent the time running the largest canine rescue and training facility in North Carolina and pulling some strings to make sure each of his six grown children find a love like the one he lost when his beloved Annie died. But as the years slip by, Daniel’s vow to never love again is starting to make him … him restless. When a woman who was pivotal to his past arrives in Bitter Bark, he wonders if her appearance is coincidence or the guiding had of his dearly departed wife…but the truth is neither. She’s about to change his life in ways he could never have imagined. And Daniel isn’t sure if his heart — or his family — will ever recover from the impact.

YOU GUYS. You need this book. You need this story. YOU NEED THESE CHARACTERS. Also? DOGS!!!
Full disclosure – I’m an author and stumbled across Roxanne St. Claire when I was looking for authors who wrote about people in their midlife, because I needed the names of some authors for advertising one of my books.
This book looked interesting and I have to say, buying it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. For every twenty books I start, I read maybe one and rarely think about them when I’ve finished the book.
Not with this one. It held my attention from the first page and never let go. I fell in love with all of the characters and continue to think about them. Absolutely one of the best I’ve read. I highly recommend it. I’d give it a six if I could!
I love all of Roxanne’s books, but this was my all-time favorite. What a great seasoned romance, proving it is never too late to fall in love.
Roxanne St. Claire has done it again–delivered a book that I don’t want to put down! I can’t get enough of her wonderful Dogfather Series!
Life has a way of mending a broken heart in the most ironic of ways. Old Dog New Tricks gives a second chance to two grieving hearts. Daniel and Katie had their chance to fall in love, but the timing wasn’t quite right. When their paths cross years later, will their hearts be ready this time? Roxanne St. Claire has crafted a romance that’s a timeless work of art. Emotions run deep in the Kilcannon family and It’s a pleasure to be invited along for the ride.
First I’m so glad Ms. St. Claire wrote this story.
The DogFather had his one true love, and that was Annie. He didn’t want to be set up by his children. Yes he was guilty of matchmaking all of his wonderful children. Only because he wanted to see them happy. When Daniel Kilcannon saw Katie again the women who set him up with his Annie. Well it was a surprise, and he started feeling things for Katie. First it was friendship, and it grew. It truly grabbed my heart. Rusty and Goldie played a roll in them seeing something important. It made me happy.
Have a box of Kleenex handy you will need it.
I liked these so much, I bought the whole series. Cool guys, pretty girls, wonderful dogs……..what’s not to like?
This was an amazing reveal for the head of the Kilcannon family; he had a son he had no knowledge of with his first real girlfriend! How do you go forward from this news and come out with a new”old” love? A touching sweet read!
great series and great read
Daniel, the Dogfather, has matched up all his kids with the loves of their lives. He had that same love with his dearly departed wife, Annie. When an old friend comes to town who has lost her loving husband, he thinks it’s the perfect friendship to talk about his beloved Annie.
The only problem is that this old friend has come with news that shakes the whole family and makes Daniel rethink his vow of never loving again.
This book was full of emotional ups and downs so be prepared with tissues on hand but know there is a HEA at the end.
You know the old saying saving the best for last……..well, yep, that is EXACTLY what Ms. St. Claire did. I laughed, i cried, real tears!, I swooned. I read the entire series and I truly feel this one nailed it!
Can’t wait for the spin-offs to start!
My favorite of this series. Beautifully told tale of love the second time around.
Richly romantic, warm and interesting.
I love to read series that continue with the same family. This family is full of people and animals with character. It’s great to see the family members encounter difficulty but overcome it and find love along the way.
WOW!! I LOVE, LOVE, love Daniel’s second chance at love in Old Dog, New Tricks by Roxanne St. Claire, part of her Dogfather series. This wonderfully amazing story features widower Daniel Kilcannon, the Dogfather who found love matches for his six children. It is a story of two “seasoned” adults who after losing their one love of their life find that they are capable of loving more than their first love. This is a very emotional story so make sure you have tissues nearby.
Katie was Daniel’s girlfriend in college who introduced him to Annie, the love of his life. Katie was torn about dating Daniel, as she loved Nico, her high school sweetheart from a strong Greek family. How was it that she could be interested in Daniel yet love Nico at the same time? After Daniel met Annie, he had eyes for no one. Each had met life’s puzzle piece that fit them perfectly. Fast forward forty-plus years with Daniel running into Katie, now a widow, in his home town of Bitter Bark, finding himself attracted to her once again; despite a promise he made to himself of never loving another. Katie was there on a mission, needing to let Daniel become aware of a problem that recently been discovered that went back to the time they once dated. Since Daniel wasn’t willing to move forward with Katie he was “Dogfathered” by his and her kids, getting them together and a second chance at having love in their life. There were definite themes in this story; family, ancestry, and puzzle pieces. A secondary love story occurs with Daniel’s dog Rusty and a rescue brought to the farm for fostering.
Ms. St. Claire wrote an amazing story that was moving and filled with love, wonderful dialogue, and endearing characters that should definitely not be missed. This book is a standalone but includes characters from the previous books in this series. I highly recommend Old Dog, New Tricks to other readers and I am anxious for the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I’ve read this series from the start, each book gets better and includes updates & interactions with previous (family!!). So good, I love that a portion goes to animal rescue in the first month and that the dogs on the cover are rescues looking for their forever home.
Widower Dr. Daniel Kilcannon is a retired veterinarian who owns the largest canine rescue and training facility in North Carolina. He is affectionately known as the Dogfather. An old girlfriend returns to town and turns his life topsy-turvy. Daniel plans to unite their families in order to prepare for their future. Will Daniel open his heart to Katie? Or will her secret stand in the way of their second chance?
Widow Katie Santorini is an interior designer. She and Daniel share a past. Katie receives news that could alter not only her family but also the Kilcannons. She fears Daniel’s reaction to her bombshell. As their lives intertwine, Katie offers to help him redecorate his living room. She never expects to fall in love again. Will Katie’s secret tear two families apart? Can the Santorini and Kilcannon families weather this unexpected surprise?
I have eagerly anticipated Daniel’s book since the author confirmed he would definitely receive one. He is a man who believes strongly in dictating his life’s decisions by what’s right and wrong. I adore Daniel’s steadfast devotion to his family. He takes his late wife’s adage to heart and helps their children find matrimonial happiness. I like how Daniel is beyond unflappable. He too is susceptible to whatever surprises life throws in one’s path. But what I love most about Daniel is his unwavering belief in his family. He had no doubts that the Kilcannons would accept the changes Katie’s secret would bring.
Katie gradually grew on me. She is such a compassionate woman who proves to be equally devoted to her family. I admire the bravado and strength it took Katie to tell Daniel her news, despite how it would affect both families. She never once put her family above his but thought of them both. But what I love most about Katie is how she helps Daniel to finally move on with his life. She has no intention of replacing his late wife nor erasing her memories.
OLD DOG NEW TRICKS is book nine in Roxanne St. Claire’s dog-oriented contemporary series, THE DOGFATHER. I adore the Kilcannon family, especially their sense of solidarity. They rally together to face whatever trial or problem that rises. I love seeing how the family continues to expand since the prior eight books, including their canine family members.
OLD DOG NEW TRICKS is a heartfelt tale of two lonely and grieving hearts becoming whole again. I am delighted that this story is not the last in the series, but a prelude for more to come. I cannot wait to see who is next on the Dogfather’s match-making radar.

Oh my heart! Daniel, the Dogfather, has successfully managed to settle all six of his children into relationships and now it is his turn for a little romance in his life. Reluctant though he is, it happens anyway in the sweetest and most special way. I’m not going to give anything away because I want you to read this one! This could be read as a standalone but DON’T! Read the entire series! I recommend it and you will not be disappointed. Start at the beginning and binge your way through. You will not only find your happy place, you will be satisfied and your heart will be ever better off 🙂
Rocki has promised this is not the end of the Kilcannon’s as this is a big and extended family and there are cousins galore who need lovin’ so we can only hope there are more around the corner!
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I highly recommend this one along with the rest of the series!
Holy DogFather…, I didn’t want to see this book end! The plot was genius of Roxi…the part of the story that was always talked around but never totally explained till now. My heart was bleeding for the 2 families the entire time. So much love in one place, only good could come of it. You don’t want to miss this one!!!
In classic Roxanne St. Claire fashion, Old Dog New Tricks is an emotional tilt-a-whirl from page one. Tissues are a necessity as there are many tears as Daniel works towards his second HEA. Longtime readers will appreciate the Kilcannon’s banding together to make things right. St. Claire is one of my go-to authors and this is no exception.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.
The Dogfather and match maker of love, Daniel Kilcannon, finally gets his own love story. I have basically waited for the Dog-father’s love story to be told since the beginning. The writing was on the walls, the possible love interest were piling up book after book and the excitement of waiting for it to be told was building stronger. I wasn’t sure who was going to be the woman to win Daniel’s heart but I never would have guessed correctly.
This story had me in tears more then any book I’ve read, but also had me cracking up and really feeling like part of this crazy loving family. I so can’t wait to read what Roxanne St. Claire will dream up to write about all the remaining and new family members in books to come.
