Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little “tweaks” have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.
What could possibly go wrong? possibly go wrong?
An American hacker in King Arthur’s court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlin… and not, y’know, die or anything.

I loved OFF TO BE THE WIZARD by Scott Meyer. I LOVE the concept of these books. It’s a scifi spin on the fantasy genre. The basic premise is that Martin, a 20-something computer nerd, finds the file that controls the universe on a server someplace. He figures out how to hack it so he can change his appearance, location, and bank account. Of …
A fun romp through the middle ages as seen through the lens of a modern-day man turned wizard. There isn’t so much a “magic system” as there is a “computer system” but saying more would be spoilers.
Very entertaining! Love the Lord of the Rings references! Well-written, made me laugh a ton of times! I would have liked to hear more of Gwen, though! As a computer nerd myself, this book fit me perfectly hehe!
I really loved the concept of the book from the first Chapter. It certainly presents an alternate universe in an entertaining way, but if you’re not careful, you’ll begin to think this actually explains some things. Hmmm….maybe it does 🙂
Somewhere between a 3 and 4, depending on your personal taste. For my personal taste, this is more like a 3.
The premise is uniquely hilarious and quite clever. It’s quirky and full of outlandish scenes that made me chuckle. However, it’s also full of computer jargon and general nerd lingo that just went over my head. This book is for a specific …
I enjoyed the story, and the writing and protagonist were funny, however in an overabundance of litrpg’s, while an original concept the writing wasn’t exciting or moving.
Hilarious! This delightfully nerdy story follows Martin, computer programmer in 2012, as he discovers that he and the entire world are nothing but a computer algorithm–which he can manipulate. He first makes himself taller, levitates, time-travels, and then adds a few 0’s to his bank balance, whereupon the police show up to investigate possible …
good read
Seriously hilarious world!!!
I love so much about this book.
It’s funny. Not “that made me smile a bit” funny. Real, actual, audible laughter funny.
The characters are relatable. Maybe because I’m a computer geek at heart, but I can really understand the motivations of these characters, and they feel authentic.
Finally, the story is well-structured, allowing the other …
The whole Magic 2.0 series is great. I would highly recommend it.
Completely and unapologetically nerdy. This book is a deep deep shade of nerd, and proud of it. It’s a light hearted and, at times, silly read (or listen); good for long commutes and long lines. The characters are a bit uncolored, and the jokes might be easy, but it’s a happy go lucky tale of time traveling wizard coders – what did you expect?! …
