Off the Radar by Regan Black is one more piece in the Unknown Identities puzzle, and a big one, at that. John, Amelia, and friends, make a big dent in Messenger’s operation, while also rescuing Henk Patterson’s old SEAL teammate. In doing so, they bring a new ally into the fold, FBI agent Chloe Spencer. Fans of this series will love the new piece of the puzzle. New readers should go back to the beginning to make sure they get the full impact of this solid romantic suspense.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novella.
Another action and adrenaline packed story of the warriors rescued from the Unknown Identities with the help of the Brotherhood Protectors.
Danny Connolly has known for some time that UI has been manipulating him and other soldiers for their own benefit. Quietly, he has rebelled against them, trying to lose their hold on him, while using his super-enhanced hearing and ability to pick radiowaves, an aptitude that UI gave him. His latest project, to gather information and keep eye on Special Agent Chloe Spencer has turned into a deadly mission, and Danny knows, if he is going to act against the UI, it is now or never.
The unexpected help he gets, to convince Chloe to follow him, changes Danny’s life and future forever, giving him possibilities and opportunities he didn’t dare to dream about.
Chloe is a smart, capable and able heroine of the tale. She is not afraid to act and step into the battle when needed, she knows when to listen and when to lead, she can see the bigger picture and doesn’t act hastily.
Danny had lost his hope to ever have a so-called normal life again. His memory of the past is back, he knows what the UI is doing is wrong, he knows he is being used, and he is aware how impossible it would be to escape the claws of the organization having a tight hold on him and others like him. But that simmer of hope has kept him going.
The attraction and romance building between Danny and Chloe, and the timeline of it are well done, giving it more foundation and thus more believability. The connection between them is strong, the passion awakening a tangible force.
The action is deadly and fierce, going directly to the heart of the organization, accomplishing more harm and destruction than any attack before. It is fascinating to see the team work together, and how far each of them has come as the series continues. Especially seeing the leaders of the pack, John and Amelia, finding their home, a safe place to land on, giving them a chance of a future while nesting and making a family, was heartwarming.
While the main story continues with each installment of the series, the author has built each novella so that it is easy to follow the storyline and for new readers to jump in, even in a middle of the series, without it getting to be repetitive to readers following from the beginning. Each new book is packed with suspense and action, a new couple finding soulmates, and visiting with the old friends from the previous books.
An entertaining and mesmerising tale of vigorous and potent action and suspense with technology and abilities that gives you the chills, a sweet and alluring romance between smart, honorable, and charming characters that make you smile and sigh, with a refreshingly original storytelling that keeps you captivated.
~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Hank Patterson from the Brotherhood Protectors Series makes a cameo appearance in this new book! He wants to find a former team-mate who he thought was dead but now believes is part of UI.
Danny Connolly, aka Audio, has ben dispatched on his latest mission. He knows UI is up to no good but he got rid of one tracker but he’s not sure if they have any others. But being sent to kill an FBI agent is a new low. He has watched Chloe for some time and knows she is a good agent.
Chloe is an intriguing character and a strong female to boot. Danny is sweet and loyal to Chloe even though she should be his target. I loved the weird extended family she has. They could make Witness Protection obsolete! I love Ben too. He is so snarky and sneaky! I also loved the wee glimpses of John and Amelia now that they are about to become parents!
Hank Patterson, a former SEAL and head of the Brotherhood Protectors, believes a former colleague, Danny Connolly, is still alive and was trapped by Unknown Identities, a black ops agency. He knows he can count on John Noble to help him find out what happened to Danny. While investigating shady goings-on regarding a leak in a tech company, FBI Special Agent Chloe Spencer has unknowingly put herself in the crosshairs of the nefarious group, and Danny was dispatched to kill her. However, inadvertently UI may have provided Danny with a chance to return to a semblance of normal life.
With every new book, you never know what awaits you, except another exciting episode in this innovative series. While faithful readers will catch up with previous characters, newcomers will not be lost for one second because I think Regan Black is the queen of efficient writing: in a few crystal clear sentences, she summarises all the important points of the series, without infodumping. This is a very odd thing to say, but OFF THE RADAR is such a comfortable read: the pace is steady, there are hair-raising action sequences, and the characters are spectacularly well fleshed out; Danny’s enhancement is just as extraordinary as Ben’s (you will have to read to find out!). Chloe is one of my favourite heroines ever: she acts rationally, she is not gullible or hysterical, but she puts her professional skills to good use. Chloe is just so very, very cool!
OFF THE RADAR is a novella with a lot of substance, and I felt Ms. Black was very clever in how the romance between Danny and Chloe started and develops. I also loved catching up with John and Amelia; there shared such beautiful, tender moments together. I think this is Regan Black’s most impressive demonstration of her superlative writing skills; it’s rare to see this sort of book written with such effortless flair and understated panache. I can hardly wait for the next instalments!
This is an exciting tale of intrigue and romance. In “Off the Radar” we meet Danny Connolly, UI code name Audible. Danny is another inductee into the nefarious world of Unknown Identities. Only this time he is not so fully indoctrinated that he isn’t thinking for himself and planning to take advantage of the first opportunity to extricate himself from UI. When presented with the assignment to permanently remove his current subject, FBI Special Agent Chloe Spencer, Danny knows this is his opportunity. Now he only needs to figure out how he can do it without them both ending up dead.
The story is fast paced, action packed and engaging. It will definitely keep your attention. The characters are strong, interesting, and easy to empathize with. The narrative flows effortlessly with intrigue, emotions, and steamy romance. The storyline of the series is intense and compelling, and although each story can work as a standalone, it may be more enjoyable if the stories are read in succession. The characters are well written and integrated into the whole series. The books are hard to put down, with easy flow, full of action, strong emotions, and solid characterizations. I highly recommend you read this story and the series!
