SHE MAY BE HIS WORST ENEMY…
For deadly secret agent Peter Macmillan, language is a weapon—one he uses to hunt criminals, destroy plots, and charm enemies. Seducing information out of a beautiful singer in a Bangkok hotel should be easy…except this particular singer has the … be easy…except this particular singer has the power to destroy his cool façade, and with it, his last defense against a dark past.
HE MAY BE HER ONLY HOPE…
He tricked her. He helped himself to her body and her secrets. He has enemies everywhere. Laney Lancaster should hate Peter, but when she discovers him shirtless, sweaty, and chained up in the hotel’s dungeon, all she can think about is freeing him. Because she knows what it’s like to be trapped and alone. And she could use a dangerous friend.
They might be wrong for each other, but the instant they join forces, Laney and Peter are plunged into an odyssey of hot sex and dark danger. To survive, they must trust each other with their lives—and their hearts.

OFF THE EDGE is the first I’ve read by this author, so I don’t know if her unique use of language is typical or because the MC is a linguist, using verbiage as an evocative tool. Either way this story eventually paints a compelling picture which slowly draws the reader in and before you’re even aware captures your attention with its intense and gripping drama. Although it took a little bit for me to get into the story, there is a lot of emotion, action, and passion in this tale that builds within each page bringing you inexorably toward the climactic heart-stopping almost ending. Of course, the last chapter is more of an epilogue of sorts which leaves the reader with all the good feels for a book well read.
Spy novel with the love story thrown in. Characters are a little different making it interesting.
Incredibly well crafted. A lyrical amalgamation of action, romance and intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Wow!
One of my all-time favorites!!!
Laney is living in Thailand, on the run from her psychopathic ex who has sent his goons after her to bring her back to the U.S. She meets Macmillan, a linguistics professor lecturing in Bangkok. They are immediately and intensely attracted to each other. We learn almost from the beginning that Laney is being set up by people she trusts. And Macmillan is a lot more than a linguistics prof. He’s also a secret agent with the Association, a secret, high-level security group devoted to stopping the auction of a laser weapon of mass destruction.
Both Laney and Macmillan are wounded from earlier life experiences. She tends to be naïve but also brave. He’s an intellectual who is also a killer. Their steam turns into real love and a chance for a new life. His ventures into language, the stuff of linguistics, are actually very interesting and made me wonder if there are people out there now tracking down terrorists using his methods. The romance is super steamy. Even better is the suspense. There were passages in the book that were so suspenseful than I ended up reading page after page when I was supposed to be working! This book won the 2014 RITA Best Romantic Suspense award. The award is well-deserved.
This is my first Carolyn Crane book. I got it on sale off of Amazon. Laney is on the run from her powerful and abusive ex-husband. She’s working as a singer at a hotel in Bangkok. Her path crosses with Peter, a mysterious linguistics expert that works for a shadowy quasi-military/government agency.
I found this book well written and entertaining but also pretty unrealistic. I’m used to suspending my sense of reality while reading books but this one was a bit far fetched even for me. Still, it was an enjoyable way to pass time while I was sitting in an airport.
Loved the plot twist and the reluctant heroine who learns to save herself . Read this one to see how a Bookish and unlikely agent learns let go of his revenge learns to live in the present and future when he finds a helpless woman who is not has helpless as she thinks. These characters bring out the best in each other.
You know that feeling when you open a romantic suspense book and it’s kind of perfect? That’s this book. Equal humans get shot at while forming a deep intellectual connection. Also mutual consent. A rare find.
intense read. I found it hard to put this book down as I needed to make sure both Peter and Lainie both made it out OK.
Good character development. A page turner and enjoyable. I would read more from her.
I loved this book so much I bought a 4-book bundle by the same author…which won’t be my last!
I wanted to love it, I really did. But…some of it was a little far fetched. If you can accept that, then you have a fairly fast paced action thriller with a HEA.
Good story until it got a little unreal with super powers in the end. Our hero seemed a little dumb at times until you remembered the fear and stress she was living with.
Interesting romance with nice setting and characters
Different from anything else I’ve read from this genre. Loved it
This is one of only a few books that I’ve read that NEEDS to be made into a movie! Great characters, a plot that kept you reading long after you should have gone to bed and it was fun. I’ve been telling my friends about this book.
