An Amazon Top 100 Bestseller with 75,000 copies sold and over 1,300 “Five Star” reviews. The rumblings of war in distant countries mattered little to Danny McClain. Growing up in Chicago, his world revolved around after-school jobs, a rescued beagle, his pen pal in Holland, and the Cubs’ chance to go to the World Series. Then, in December of 1941, during his first year at Northwestern University, … year at Northwestern University, news of the attack on Pearl Harbor hit much too close to home. After a series of unexpected events over the next couple of years, Danny found himself in the co-pilot seat of a B-17, stationed with the 390th Bomb Group in Framlingham, England.
Anya Versteeg had been just a teenager when Hitler’s troops invaded her homeland of Holland in May of 1940. Forced to grow up much too fast, the feisty preacher’s daughter eagerly immersed herself in the Dutch Resistance and its many efforts to thwart the enemy. Certain that God had turned His back on Holland, she closed her heart and did whatever she had to do to save her country before it was too late.
By 1945, the people of Occupied Holland were starving. Cut off from the outside world in retaliation for their failed attempt to oust the Germans invaders, the Dutch had no food, no electricity, no fuel, and little hope of surviving. Thousands were dying every day. Then, just days before the war ended, help came to The Netherlands like manna from heaven.
Operation Chowhound held special meaning for Lieutenant Danny McClain. Somewhere below in the battered land of tulips and windmills was the girl who needed rescuing–after rescuing so many others. And he would move heaven and earth to find her.

Interesting historical fiction
Excellent booj
I have like all oh Moody’s books. Good historical fiction!
This book gave a slightly different view of WWII Yet stuck to the facts while weaving the characters into your mind.
5 STARS!!! I thought the story line was wonderful! Hard to put this down. It was very realistic and I felt I learned much about WWII while also being entertained. I loved the way she started out in Chicago and went back and forth between the US and Holland. I loved this book..best I’ve read in a long time!
This book was so well written that it blurred the lines between fiction and nonfiction. The reality of the Netherlands during World War II and the conflict of saving oneself or saving others made this story a level deeper than boy meets girl . . . the story line was predictable but the background and reality behind the story was the richest part …
Thoroughly enjoyed this story. True details of WII I was unaware of. Great characters!
Very good story about a part of history I had not read about.
There are portions that deal with the tragedies the Nazis performed, including the deliberated, brutal murdering of babies as well as other people. For those sensitive, I’d recommend a parent pre-reading this first.
I learned so much reading this book. I had no idea what happened in Holland during WWII. I didn’t want this book to end.
Historically accurate…great character development
I guess I would call this an “inspirational book”, but it was a little too much so for my taste. I liked it, however, the way the main characters were brought together in the midst of a World War II seemed overly contrived as did the extreme stretch for a “happy ending”. The story begins in 1939 before the United States entered WW II. An …
This book peaked my interest about the Netherlands part in WWII. The people of the WWIi are so unbelievably brave.
A different view of WWII. I like that it starts with the characters very young and several years before the war. It makes their inevitable march toward fighting in the war even scarier because we know these characters and how they were before.
Good look at history!
I did not know about the operation at the end of WWII to help the people in Holland survive. This book weaves a historical tale involving the commitment of nations to help each other. The author is in a unique position to tell this story. Read and you will find out.

Occupied Holland by 1954 was suffering from starvation, no electricity, no fuel, and very little hope …
I could not put down once I got into it a way. It is well written, too. The sequel was just as good. I believe it was called Beyond the War.
Excellent read especially if you are a fan of the history World War II.
This is a novel about the bombing of Dresden, Germany and all that led up to it.
