This introduction to the Whitfield Files series is absolutely unputdownable. Steampunk is new to me, so I wasn’t sure about this one going in, but I’ve enjoyed this author’s work before so I dug in. The story is wonderfully written as expected, and its full of magic and suspense. We also get an enemies to lovers romance in the midst of all the excitement. The setting is described in a way that pulled me in and allowed me to see each scene without getting bogged down in minute details, and the characters feel real even with the magic. Theo and Silas are both likable and interesting, and their push and pull is witty and keeps the romance moving at a good pace, even when they still think they hate each other. All in all, another winner from Katherine McIntyre, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for this series.
I haven’t read much steampunk. Now that I’ve read this book, maybe I need to pursue more. I loved this book! The world-building was immensely satisfying, allowing me to imagine I was there with the characters. And the introduction of magic to the ingenious machinery enhanced the appeal of the story.
Theo has been caring for and supporting her ailing mother and her wayward sister for her whole life. She’s a talented technomancer, which means she uses her magic to fix, or to power the machines made by tinkers. She’s turned down good jobs because she’d need to travel, and she denies her own ambitions for her family’s sake. She grew up on the mean ghetto streets of Islington, running around as street kids with many others, including Silas Kylock.
Silas is one of the most talented tinkers she knows. When her sister Ellie, who likes do to illegal things and hang out with bad guys, goes missing after stealing one of the clockwork dolls made by Silas, she seeks his help to find the doll, so therefore her sister. He’s arrogant, now that his father owns a huge business and views himself as upper class. She’s poor, but he’s always fought his attraction to her.
Can these two find her sister and the stolen doll, without getting themselves killed by the bad guys? They both carry and know how to use weapons–so maybe. But can they do all of this without their hearts realizing that they belong together–that after all of these years, the first one each was attracted to was actually “the one” for them? Or will they both be done with each other after their one and only private encounter?
A very satisfying read.
She is Flintstones to work with him to find her sister who has stolen from him. As they work together they find they are not as bad as they had seemed. Can they get hernsister? Will their feelings keep growing? See how they get on
Our heroine’s sister has gone missing and she is forced to enlist the help of a man she despises.
This is a solid steampunk story with plenty of action, a bit of mystery, and a bit of romance. The setting is very well done with detailed descriptions that paint the scene in vivid colors (and smells! Yuck!). The characters are equally well developed with strong backstories and realistic emotions that make you feel like you’ve know them for years. Put it together with a fast paced adventure and you have a very entertaining weekend read.
Highly recommended.

When technomancer Theo Whitfield joins forces with the insufferable, gorgeous Silas Kylock to find her missing sister, their heated exchanges turn from irritation to desire…
The story pulled me in and I read until I couldn’t stay awake, then finished it the next day as soon as I could. This is the first book I’ve read by Ms. McIntyre and it won’t be the last. Theo is a strong heroine, intelligent and more than a little snarky. Silas seems to be an arrogant jerk at the beginning – as the story progresses and he drops his protective mask, I ended up liking him. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of how technomancy works and its capabilities. There is steam in the story and I don’t mean the technology of the day, but it is mostly part of the story line rather than the story being an excuse for intimate action. The mystery aspect of the plot is well done, keeping me up far past bedtime.
If you like Bec McMaster, you will like this one.

Theodosia “Theo” Whitfield’s sister Ellie had not come home the night before. So as much as this visit made any other obnoxious, vile thing preferable, she had no choice. She needed Silas Kylock’s help to find her, and she entered his shop. The judgmental assistant looked her up and down and decided she would not let Theo speak to Silas. As a technomancer, one who could manipulate mechanics with magic, Theo started to gather her magic and threatened to break one of the machines for sale on the counter, letting the assistant feel her magic swirl around the object. The assistant immediately saw things her way and took her to Silas.
The workbench in the room she was led to was completely covered with projects. Blueprints and designs were everywhere. Silas turned and mocked her appearance in his shop. They had grown up together in Islington, but as they got older, it seemed that he became more obnoxious. He was a full-fledged Tinker and she found Technomancer work as a handyman, but their paths continued to cross. She would have loved punching him in the face but couldn’t afford to get her pay docked. Her sister had stolen the latest model of his line of clockwork maids and she hoped to use this fact to force him to help her find Ellie. With her own talents, she could track the clockwork maid by the metal it was made from. Asking suggestively what he would get in return – since he could simply build another – he got her to finally offer a favor but only in her professional capacity, nothing more. She needed to save her sister or she wouldn’t even be here. Since he hired technomancers routinely, he instead said he would go with her and would ask the favor after they located Ellie.
Ellie has gotten herself into deep trouble. Aside from the danger that Theo and Silas will face, they begin to feel attraction for each other. With a slow burn that erupts into blazing chemistry, what is in their future? And will they save Ellie and keep themselves safe as well?
This was a well written, enjoyable story with a mystery to solve. One of my favorite situations is finding a couple who think they are enemies, only to find out they were wrong. This will be a fun story for the reader. The author paints such a great picture of their surroundings that it will feel real. Grab your copy and enjoy the rescue!
As always, this Author reeled me in with vivid imagery, snarky banter, strong female lead, and an endearing, yet antagonistic male!! Pulled into a world laced with magic, danger, and hope for better days, I was riveted by the relationship between Theo and Silas thrown together unexpectedly to solve a mystery and save Theo’s sister, whom has gotten herself in deep. Once they combusted, it was fire, and the slow burn nearly had me on the edge of my seat waiting, wishing, and cheering when it happened. Swooning, their relationship felt real and left me breathless! This steampunk gem really kept me glued to the pages, and I thank the Author for providing a copy to review and so look forward to the rest of this series!!
