I killed a man to protect my sisters, and now I am a fugitive. With bounty hunters hot on my trail— willing to take me dead or alive— I’m forced to disguise myself as a cabin boy on the Bella Donna. I should have been safe at sea, but I cannot escape the dangerous feelings evoked by the ship’s handsome captain. For I am Merisol, one of the adoptive daughters of Lady Eville, and to escape my past … escape my past and save my friends I will make an uncertain bargain with a shady sea witch. The deal sounds too good to be true. What could possibly go wrong?

Out of the upcoming daughter’s of eville books, Of Sea and Song was the one I looked forward to the most (the little mermaid/ariel is my favorite disney princess, next to beauty and the beast/belle) I am OBSESSED with mermaids/sirens/ocean, that being said I was Not disappointed at all! The details were so amazing I could smell the salty air! The undersea was especially awesome. It was so beautiful, just a wonderful spin on the little mermaid tale, I just had to finish it as soon as possible, a little too soon because now I am so sad it’s over, now my favorite book from this series (and a favorite book in general!) but continue to look forward to the next book in the DOE series!
If you like little mermaid spin offs, or just ocean/siren related books in general you will LOVE Of Sea and Song, for it is truly a TREASURE.
Each daughter of eville captures my heart in different ways and I can’t wait to read the next story, you can read each book as standalone or in order, for each book has little ties to the other, small spoilers. You won’t want to miss anything in the daughter’s of eville series though!
I loved it! What a great story and amazing characters. It is a great fractured fairy tale of the little mermaid. It is full of love, hate and misunderstanding. It has an unexpected ending.
Of Sea and Song
by Chanda Hahn
Book 3 in the Daughters of Eville series
Rating: 4.5/5
I’m amazed at this book. It is so well written and the story is so well thought-out that I didn’t want to stop listening (I borrowed the audiobook via Hoopla through my local public library). I loved the characters and the wonderful adventures they got caught up in. I have read the first two books in the series but the books can definitely be read by themselves. I highly recommend reading all three of the books (and the ones to come). (The first book in the series is currently on sale as of 10/24/2020).
Having never read anything from this author before starting this series, I was pleasantly surprised to find YA fantasy fairytale retellings with tons of added background and lots of twists and turns. I love a good retelling but this one was extra special, and as the reader, I was constantly being tossed to and fro with every unveiling and adventure that came up. I laughed. I cried (a lot near the end). I thoroughly enjoyed one of my favorite fairy tales coming to life in such a unique way. (P.S. I’m a huge fan of Melanie Dickerson and KM Shea, so if you enjoy their fairytale retellings, you’ll definitely appreciate this series with a slightly darker side).
From the audiobook standpoint, I found the reader very talented at portraying the feelings and emotions of multiple characters that each had a distinct voice/accent. I was very impressed and will definitely be looking for more audiobooks read by Jesse Vilinsky.
PG-13 appropriate.
Highly recommend if you enjoy fairytale retellings with some imaginative changes that almost work better than the originals.
I’m really enjoying the world building that Chanda Hahn is engaged in with these Daughters of Eville” books. This latest offering is no exception. I stayed up late to finish it, and now I want to read it again! I also appreciate the main character development, especially in this book. The main character goes through an exciting and unexpected journey to find herself.
This is the best of the series!! Every time I read a Chanda Hahn book I am blown away! Twists and turns… and character depth! This one was no different! She has a way of bringing you in to every story she writes.
What a ride. When Merisol accidentally kills someone to protect her “sister”, she must go on the run to keep the others safe. Risking it all, she sets off to disappear, running into a dashing stranger that she finds rude, escaping bounty hunters….dressing as a boy to work on a ship… dealing with mean sailors all while keeping her identity a secret. What happens next? A “must read” to find out. Chanda Hahn is a wonderful storyteller and she really knows how to draw you in. I read this book in about 3 hours….just couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
This book is the third in the series, and I have been anxiously awaiting it to come out. I was not disappointed! I really love the way these books are written… I am a sucker for a new take on a classic tale. I love the fantasy and some magic thrown in. Really loved this and can’t wait for the next in this series!
Loyal to a fault.
Incredibly brave.
Kindred spirit.
Trustworthy sister.
I relate to Meri on all the levels, she’s a beautiful warrior who just wants those she loves to be safe.
The journey that the author takes us on is a bit of a whirlwind; I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see just what might happen next.
Smart. Creative. Perfectly paced. I loved this book. It’s a fabulous addition to the series. A great summer fantasy to whisk you away from all that life has thrown at us lately.
I absolutely love the world the author has created in this series. I also love how none of her characters are perfect. Even prince charming has flaws. While this is the third book in this series, they can all be read alone. I was nervous about this book since The Little Mermaid was always my favorite story. However, this version is so different that I was completely hooked by the second paragraph. I’m not anxiously awaiting the next book and I have no doubt that I will be sad when this series is over.
I cannot wait to read the rest of this series! I loved the first two, and after reading Of Sea and Song, I added it to my re-read list! I love how each one of them have their own element or power that they really are great with, while the other things the others are good at, they really struggle with. At first I wasn’t sure about Meri’s character, but I slowly fell in love with it. I’ve never been disappointed yet with the authors books
Of Sea and Song is another wonderful retelling of a classic fairytale. This story is full of action from beginning to end and has a few great twists along the way. Merisol is a wonderful character to read and fall in love with. I highly recommend this book!
Have you ever done something and instantly knew you would regret it? If so, This is the story for you.. Despite this being a series this book can stand on its own and boy does it.
I’ll start by saying I’m not huge into mermaids but I’ve enjoyed this authors other writings so I felt it would be worthwhile to give it a go and I’m incredibly glad I dove into Meri’s story and instantly felt kinship for the love she has for her sisters. She is incredibly brave to start but sadly I knew I was soon I was in for a bit of heartbreak during a fateful moment that starts our journey. You see her waiver more in who to trust an even more so trusting herself. I get goosebumps again just thinking about the twist and turns of this book. When a story can have you swooning over an imaginary character ( Brennon) you know it’s going to be magic. This book truly shows amazingly descriptive, imaginative, thoughtful writing. Because of this I can actually imagine myself as Meri and what it feels like to have magic, to be hunted, and have an adventure of a lifetime at sea. This book tenfold is so worth every second that you will be wishing it would continue forever.
I loved this third installment in the Daughters of Eville series! The twist on the classic fairy tale was so fun and unexpected. I was so excited to read Meri’s story and I flew through this book and couldn’t put it down! I can’t wait to see where this series take the other sisters!
What an adventure! Meri’s tale is enthralling from the very first sentence. Thrilling, captivating, mysterious, salty, turbulent, and oh so beautiful, this story truly lures you in!!
This was such a good book! Family, adventure, action, redemption and romance are just some of the best things about this book. If you like a spin on the Little Mermaid or Sirens then this book is for you.
Absolutely perfect!!! This book was so amazing and I swear this series just keeps getting better and better! I was giddy with excitement to read Meri’s story and I was not disappointed. This book has a wonderful twist from the classic tale and I loved all the characters. Ok well, not all of them because Hahn’s villains are as evil as they come. But her heroes are just as delicious! Brennon and Vasili? Swoon central! >>insert heart eyes and deep sighs<< Even her background characters find their way into your heart. I’m looking at you Howland and Lad. This book was filled with excitement and adventure, laughter and tears, I simply could not get enough. Meri’s story starts as rough as a turbulent sea. But when she finds her true herself, will she finally find smooth sailing?
I love it when I can’t guess the ending of a book. Yes, I knew Meri would end up with her true love but the journey was epic. I wanted to knock some sense into her a few times because she didn’t need to do everything on her own and would’ve realized things weren’t as they seemed if she only listened to others. I loved the characters and the twist to a classic fairy tale. Great read, can’t wait for #4! My daughter has trademarked #stablebaby so I was excited to get an update!!!
I received an arc for an honest review.
Outstanding. Magnificent. Spectacular. Brilliant. I absolutely loved Meri’s story and wish it could go on forever. I am not sure how Chanda Hahn does it, but each book is better than the last. I felt like I couldn’t read this book fast enough. It was so easy to get lost in this world and wish I could escape here more often. I think Chanda Hahn is such a talented and remarkable author. Her writing style is one of my favorites, she has an innate ability to create a story that is easy to follow. Her descriptions help me paint a picture in my head of a breathtaking world and amazing characters. I liked how Chanda took a different approach on how Meri left Nihill, compared to the previous two books. I thoroughly enjoyed the many twists throughout the story, as they kept me glued to the book.
In this book we follow Meri, who runs away to protect her sisters after an unfortunate incident. Word starts to spread of her being on the run and wanted by the Brunes Guild. Brennon helps Meri escape from the wrath of the Brunes Guild. However, she isn’t sure if she can trust him and escapes before he notices. But what she doesn’t realize is that her path with Brennon will eventually cross again. In this story, we learn about Meri, her magical abilities, and her ties to the sea. There were times in the book, especially towards the end where my heart broke for both her and Brennon. I loved the ending and wish it could go on forever.
As the third installment of the Daughters of Eville series, this one was just as exciting and amazing as the last ones. I have always loved mermaid/siren myths and couldn’t wait to explore this twisted retelling and I wasn’t disappointed.
Of Sea and Song features Meri, a character introduced in previous books, and picks up fairly quickly after Of Glass and Glamour. Given to Lady Eville when she was a baby, Meri has an affinity for water magic, usually through singing. Using her gifts to protect one of her sisters, Meri has to flee aboard a ship to escape the relentless bounty hunters. Disguised as a cabin boy, Meri meets a crew of potential friends and conniving enemies, makes a deal with a sea witch, and has to try to save two kingdoms from ruin.
Meri is impulsive and unflinchingly loyal. Her journey was filled with non-stop action, unknown truths, and a history she’s waited her whole life to uncover. This series continues to incorporate little nuances from the original stories while unfolding in unique and surprising ways. The creativity and world building is astounding, making this a book you don’t want to miss.
This book was another amazing retelling of a story we thought we knew! The Eville sisters are kicking butt! This is a Little Mermaid remake story with it’s own twists and adventure! It had me on an emotional ride that I didn’t want to get off! Loved it!!
