With a serial killer on the loose, the baffling mystery of Aiden’s past, and their tenuous budding romance, Aiden and Fouchard tread through a world of magic and myth on padded shoes, terrified to stir up something neither can control or defeat.Aiden Mercer’s life now centers around lounging on the sunny beaches of his adopted country with a beer in one hand and a coffee in the other while … coffee in the other while admiring the local male population. After a rough life as a respected detective in DC, playing it cool shouldn’t be too hard, right? With the magical community on his case and dead bodies piling up around town, the responsibility of finding their killer seems fated to fall on him and deny him of his easy living.
Then there is Naël.
Cantankerous merman Naël Fouchard’s life is focused on bringing up and protecting his little sister. When DNA found at the scene of the murders mark him as the prime suspect, Naël seeks out the help of Aiden, whose reputation as a detective grossly belies his lazy lifestyle and apparent lack of ambition.
The chemistry between the strong, stoic Naël and the easygoing Aiden is undeniable, no matter how many walls Aiden builds.
If this unlikely pair can’t come to terms with their feelings for each other long enough to catch the killer, their emotional turmoil might yet allow the murderer to kill them instead.

Of Magic and Scales by Natalina Reis a magical five-star read. I really enjoyed the mystery and the sounds of the ocean will just enrapture you. The world building and character descriptions are well done and will help you settle into the story, the murder mystery elements and the romance blend together to make you feel the story. It wasn’t my favourite M/M story, but it was well done and a good story overall and shows us the talent that Natalina Reis has as an author.
Initially I found the writing style a little challenging to get into, however after the first couple of chapters I caught the flow. Of course, then I couldn’t put it down. Of Magic and Scales is a meandering mystery story It takes it’s time and introduces several magical creatures along the way. Aiden trying to come to terms with himself added dimension to the story. And, Naël is someone you kind of love to hate. He is irritating and rude, but he also cares about Aiden in his own way. I could really identify with Aiden’s desire to just live a low-key life without drama. Unfortunately, as in real life, you don’t always get what you wish for.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I’m wondering if there will be another book because I would definitely read more!

Of Magic and Scales is magical. This M/M story by Natalina Reis if full of mystery, romance and magic. It is quite original and kept me up long into the night because I couldn’t put it down. The world building and characters are refreshing and interesting. Aiden and Naēl have some real interesting chemistry, and I kept rooting for them. This is a very well written book, that I highly recommend.
Of Magic and Scales by Natalina Reis is a quirky story that is MM romance and is full of magic and mayhem, suspense and romance and has many paranormal characters but the man man is a merman. I really enjoyed the world and characters that Natalina has created. It is a fun and easy read that is well written and interesting. I found myself laughing out loud with this feel good romance.
Aiden thought moving far away he could escape magic and magical creatures but his reputation precedes him and he can’t deny what he has tried to shut out and he soon finds himself tangled up in murder and mayhem.
I enjoyed the journey and look forward to reading more.
Natalina Reis has caught my attention with the title of this book, Of Magic and Scales. Her stories always have a thought and preparation to deliver the right amount of details to think you know what is coming ahead. Then BAM! It goes in a totally different direction. This story is no different. Aiden was a respected detective in DC and now he is just trying to take it easy. There is a magical community that is looking for him, not to mention there is a killer on the loose. There is one DNA that is at the murders and it is no other than Merman Naël Fouchard. Can Aiden and Naël team up and find the murderer? Will there be some romance between them? I highly recommend reading this book to see what happens.
Of Magic and Scales is a great M/M fantasy, romantic thriller by Natalina Reis that had me captivated from the very beginning, right up to the very end. It is my first read by this author and I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last as I enjoyed this book very much.
I do like a good M/M romance but this one is that little bit different in that one of the main characters, Nael, is a merman (or merrow as they prefer to be called). If, like me you are wondering how to pronounce Nael’s name it’s pronounced Nuh/l/ (It was annoying me to the point that I messaged the author to ask!.
Aiden Mercer has been able to see magicals since he can remember and he’s not their biggest fan since he’s had a few unpleasant run in’s with some of them. That all changes when Nael Fourchard enters into his life. Many magicals are being murdered and Nael wants Aiden to help him find out who the killer is. Added to this is the incredible sexual chemistry between the 2 men although Aiden finds Nael very rude and abrupt and doesn’t like him very much.
What follows is a great tale of intrigue and mystery, delving into the world of witches, fairies, trolls and many other magical creatures as Aiden and Nael try to find the killer, putting their lives in great danger on many occasions.
This book has some great secondary characters, in particular Aiden’s assistant at his coffee shop and especially Nael’s younger sister Vee. I absolutely adored Vee. She has absolutely no filter and is hilarious.
This is a great read but has left some questions still to be answered (I’m not going to give any spoilers), so I’m really hoping that there is more to come from these fantastic characters.
This is a great story bringing romance, crime, and supernatural all together.
Aiden seems like a normal person running a coffee shop in Portugal. However things arent always what they seem. Aiden has a gift/curse which means he can tell supernatural beings apart from humans. This has gotten him into trouble in the past so he stays away from any magical beings.
That is until a witch finds him and begs for his help. There is someone who is out there killing magical beings and she needs his help to find out who it is. Only clue is there is evidence its a Merman.
An arrival of a Mr Fouchard sends Aiden into a spin. There is a huge attraction between them. However Mr Fouchard turns out to be a Merman.
Could he be the murder? Will Aiden be too blinded by his emotions and feelings to find the truth. Will the pair of them get together or will the distraction of feelings cost them their lives.
This was a gripping story from the start .
This isn’t my first book by this author. I have loved all the others I have read. Apparently this one isn’t just for me. I know there are all kinds of people out there…different personalities. In here one of the main characters just seems to harsh almost to the mean point with his words. It makes the other character look almost too weak and desperate. I really struggled to get any connection between these two. Yes things shaped up more towards the end and the characters seemed more in love.
There is a mystery element that added to this story. It was interesting all the different magical beings that are involved. It did help liven this up a bit for me. Overall I was saddened that I couldn’t love this story. This is not a favorite from this author.
Of Magic and Scales by Natalina Reid was a great novel! This book caught me from the beginning, and I couldn’t put it down! It was incredibly good and well written. I’ve never read a fantasy/crime/romance novel quite like this one before. I thought it was very unique! This is the first novel from this author, and I can’t wait to read more. I highly recommend this novel!

Of Magic and Scales by Natalina Reis
Of Magic and Scales By Natalina Reis ia a MM romance suspense story that I couldn’t put down once I started reading. I absolutely loved this book there’s a little bit of everything from mystery to danger, magic and romance. The characters are very well developed and the story well written. The twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what happens next. Aiden and Nael have pretty good chemistry and they definitely have attraction between them. What does there future look like? Can they figure there relationship out before both become victims of murder? Find out what happens next in this absolute must read. I highly recommend. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed works by Reis in the past and knew this would be extremely well written. And it most definitely was. The characters were so well developed. They were real (even if one is a merman) and relatable. I loved the flow of the storyline and really found myself enjoying the book even more than I anticipated. Extremely well written.
Didn’t think I’d really care for a M/M book… Uhm wrong. I loved this book. Aiden is a great character who’s easy to love in my opinion. Näel is a hard ass, or so I thought. Wrong. I am really hoping the sequel keeps me as interested as this one did!
Of Magic And Scales by Natalina Reis
5-Stars
Of Magic And Scales by Natalina Reis was an excellent read! I absolutely loved main character Aiden and Naël. They were so much better than I expected. I loved Aiden’s personality. He was more laid back and relaxed about life. He was sweet, caring, and enjoyed life. Naël was gruffer. He came off as a tough guy at first but his true colors began to shine through as the story progressed. Speaking of which, I loved how easily the storyline pulled me in! It had an excellent flow and was organized. This book really kept me interested and I struggled to set it down. It was amazing and I highly recommend it.
Of Magic and Scales by Natalina Reis is a sweet, heart warming story that is a mixture of romance and magic. This is a M/M romance with two lovely characters that you will definitely get behind.
Natalina Reis is one of those authors that has a way of creating a lasting story. They always draw you in and keep you reading, right the way through to the last page. The characters in this book are what made it for me. They were so likeable, relatable. Even with the fantasy element. They were such interesting and diverse characters.
The story was also well written. It was developed well and kept moving along nicely. The author’s writing style is soft and engaging and creates a story you won’t want to put down. This is well wroth reading and is one I would suggest you try today!
Aiden Mercer can see “Magic Beings” but denies that anything inside of him is magical after events from the past. He has moved to Portugal to run a coffee shop, Bicas R Us, and hide from anything magical. When Aiden is approached by a witch, Tasslyn, for help investigating a series of murders of magical beings he doesn’t want to help at all but soon finds himself dragged into the case.
Nael Fouchard is a merman who find himself as the prime suspect in the murder cases due to merman DNA being found at the scenes. Nael declares himself innocent and wants to work with Aiden to prove it.
The sexual tension between the two is creating issues for Aiden and soon he finds himself falling for the merman. Can Aiden prove Nael’s innocence or will he find himself the next victim?
I found this book okay and at times I was really enjoying it and at other times I found myself just trying to get through it.
I liked Aiden but I found his refusal to admit that he could be magical was getting annoying. He was obviously attractive but stayed away from commitment and anything serious. We learn that something happened in the past involving magical beings and that was why he left the US for Portugal but I never really understood the entirety of what happened.
Nael is an attractive but rude customer of Aiden’s who turns out to be the prime suspect. I loved his relationship with his sister, Veronica, and I knew that there was no way he would do anything that would force him to leave her. Yet Nael still had to clear his name which he needed Aiden for.
There was so much chemistry between Aiden and Nael but there was also so much at stake for Nael. The two found themselves together at certain times and couldn’t deny how they were feeling and things definitely got hotter!
When one incident occurs you know that Aiden is in danger but there is a twist on the magical side. I liked that they discovered what it came from but I really didn’t think the author did a good enough job tying it all together and explaining it all. We knew who the killer possibly was from the DNA but it didn’t really make sense to me how the person was part of mythology and I was a little confused.
I did like when Aiden accepted his “magical abilities” which he needed to do a daring rescue. We still don’t find out what Aiden really even was though which I found a little frustrating.
The end was good and I was happy for how things worked out.
