Nora Roberts, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the epic Year One returns with Of Blood and Bone, a new tale of terror and magick in a brand new world. They look like an everyday family living an ordinary life. But beyond the edges of this peaceful farm, unimaginable forces of light and dark have been unleashed. Fallon Swift, approaching her thirteenth birthday, barely knows the world … Swift, approaching her thirteenth birthday, barely knows the world that existed before–the city where her parents lived, now in ruins and reclaimed by nature since the Doom sickened and killed billions. Traveling anywhere is a danger, as vicious gangs of Raiders and fanatics called Purity Warriors search for their next victim. Those like Fallon, in possession of gifts, are hunted–and the time is coming when her true nature, her identity as The One, can no longer be hidden.
In a mysterious shelter in the forest, her training is about to begin under the guidance of Mallick, whose skills have been honed over centuries. She will learn the old ways of healing; study and spar; encounter faeries and elves and shifters; and find powers within herself she never imagined. And when the time is right, she will take up the sword, and fight. For until she grows into the woman she was born to be, the world outside will never be whole again.

Nora Roberts is always remarkable and guaranteed to give a good story. She’s an auto-buy for me and has been for years, and the only thing I’d change about this series is not to have to wait so long for the final story in this trilogy!
While not the action-packed tome Year One was, Of Blood and Bone gives the reader some beautiful character development. Though boasting more than 450 pages, Roberts’ upcoming novel felt like a quick read. The narrative flowed smoothly and the action that was present was important to the story line. There was no action for action’s sake. One thing I would recommend is to give yourself a refresher course on the characters, because there is a large cast, and it’s easy to lose track of who is who between publication dates.
This book was provided to me at no charge. My review is given voluntarily.
So much awesomeness packed into this series, Chronicles of the One. I cannot wait for the 3rd book. I highly recommend this book and the first, Year One. So, so good.
The compelling saga continues and I am completely engrossed with this series! I’m listening to the audio book, enjoying every moment of action and emotion; of vivid imagery and brilliant characters.
Magick destroying nuclear warheads. I’d like to see that. The second Chronicles of the One. The saga continues as Fallon,The One, develops her talents and prepares for the onslaught ahead. A dystopian tale which knows no boundaries to where humans can go [or fall]. For those who love light and dark, war and peace, with a touch of the Waltons thrown in.
I’m absolutely in love with this series by Nora Roberts … paranormal post-apocalyptic suspense with a touch of romance. She writes wonderful strong women and men who are supportive of each other. This tale is suspenseful and I can’t wait for the next.
I am enjoying the hell out of this trilogy.
Nora Roberts does it again with the second installment in the Chronicles of The One.
Of Blood and Bone, while telling its own important parts of the story, feels very much like a buildup to the finale – which is exactly what it is. We’ve now learned the fate of the characters we first met in Year One – some good, some bad. We’ve gone deeper into the powers, hearts, and minds of existing characters. We’ve met new characters, both light and dark. And we’ve learned – along with Fallon – what must be done to fix the world (although I admit this point is still a bit vague – deliberately, I believe). And while I hate waiting nearly a year between installments, I can’t wait to see how it ends.
Side note spoiler: It’s incredibly satisfying that Simon gets to be the one to take Eric down. Here’s hoping Allegra and Petra meet similar fates.
For me, this trilogy is very reminiscent of both the O’Dwyer trilogy and the Guardians trilogy, both of which I enjoyed immensely. There’s something about the way Roberts writes fantasy that draws me in and keeps me there while also leaving me wanting more.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for the ARE!
I loved this story, and can’t wait for the next book!
A great read! Dynamic in every way… a great follow up to book 1.. and I am anticipating Book 3! A great Story…great storytelling..Great Characters… Love it.. Again!
I just finished this book, I’m ready for The Rise of the Magics! I was reading steadily. then I was reading every chance I got–I am entranced and must get the sequel to this book before I start any other book! If you read Year One, which I did some time ago–I enjoyed it and knew this would be a future book. However, with the second book — Fallon has consistently grown and I’m ready for the future.
This trilogy is Nora Roberts at her best.
Of Blood and Bone book two in the Chronicles of The One trilogy from Nora Roberts was even better the 2nd time around. While I loved it the first time, I read it there was just something about the audio that really took this story to the next level. Hearing the grief and terror in the voices of the people of New Hope, listening to the kids talking about something so small that is so incredible to them and just being able to sense the characters moods for what is to come.
Fallon Swift is no longer the baby we meet at the end of Year One she is almost a teenager about to be away from home for two years without her family. She knows what is to come for her, she has known since she was a child but the possibility of what is to come versus having to train for it are two different things. As we see the story progress, we see Fallon go from a pre-teen who doesn’t see the point in all of this to organizing everything that could mean life or death for some.
We got to go back to New Hope and see some seriously emotional reunions between old friends as well as meet new people to love. There is only one book left in this trilogy, but I think it is going to be the most powerful of all because everything from Year One has been leading to this. I think there are still some things we don’t know and have to discover but I am so excited to see how this story concludes in The Rise of Magicks.
I read and enjoyed Year One which is the first book in this series. However, I must say I’m a little disappointed by this one. The writing was still well done, which is why I give it a recommendation but I was expecting a different story.
The reason I picked up books 2 and 3 was to continue with the characters I met in Year One. But while Blood and Bone mentions them, the emphasis is on the younger kids, particularly “the chosen one” Fallon. A fifteen-year old girl. None of that would be a problem it Fallon was a likeable character but she isn’t. She’s whiny and frustrating. A full 1/2 of the book is devoted to her training and it just drags on endlessly. At least in Year One if I wasn’t on board with a character there were many more to focus on. This one was mostly about the so-called chosen one.
I’m hoping book 3 will be better.
This book was the most outstanding story I have read in a really long time. I just couldn’t put it down
loved the whole series.
What a fantastic middle book in the trilogy! And how fabulous that I discovered this series by accident and found all three books had been released, with no long wait for the next one. I don’t often read protracted series, finding it frustrating to wait years for the story to unfold. Book two in this series was every bit as riveting as the first, and I enjoyed it all the more for anticipating the third book ready and waiting for me on my bookshelf.
Having said all that, I loved the ongoing story, the action, the brewing romance, the character development and a rollicking good read. Most fascinating, for me, the eternal theme of good versus evil and an urgency to find out how this unfolds. In my view, Nora Roberts nailed it with this trilogy, developing a believable teenage heroine and a cast of supporting characters. Highly recommended and unputdownable.
For some reason the middle novel of trilogies sometimes seem to lag and that is the case in Of Blood and Bone. On the other hand I can see the necessity of developing Fallon Swift’s character so that she can be a believable leader for the coming period of war. Her two years of training with Mallick and then the experience of working with her father to train their neighbors gives her more background. We also get to know Duncan and Antonia MacLeod who are direct descedants of the MacLeod who accidentally unleashed the Doom. We already begin to see sparks flying between Duncan and Fallon. I am starting the third book of the trilogy today and can hardly wait to see what happens next
With the pandemic in the US, this book is scarily realistic and a little close to what is going on in spite of the mbook being a Fantasy. Instead of our race and political problems, the disease has killed many but also created people with different types of mythical characteristics like fairies and elves, and there are the purists who want to keep the race pure!
It had been a while since I’d read book one in this series. Why did I wait so long? Fallon is a teenager now and she is The One. That means she has to train to learn to lead the people forward to save the world. No big deal, right? Full of magic, I enjoyed Roberts’ imagination and the characters. I look forward to finding book 3 but it must be a keeper because it’s not at my local used book store. Guess I’ll have to order it.Can’t wait!
Great book!
Not quite as good as the first book but still a page-turner as you follow Fallon Swift’s journey in preparing for the war that is coming. She spends a lot of time with a wizard named Mallick, training and learning more about her powers, but already feels the pull of the darkness she will have to conquer. I’m sure there’s more action to come in the third book. Can’t wait.
