The first book in a Curse Keepers spinoff series by New York Times bestselling author Denise Grover Swank writing as D.G. Swank.Piper Lancaster might be Asheville’s most popular ghost whisperer, but she’s an unbeliever. While her clients believe she’s exorcising their ghosts, Piper knows she’s really helping them settle their inner demons—because any sane person knows ghosts aren’t real. After … real.
After the astonishing reappearance of the ruins of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, belief in the supernatural is at an all-time high, and people are seeing ghosts in every shadow. Business is better than ever. But there’s one problem—the reemergence of the Lost Colony has awakened both the supernatural world and Piper’s very real talent as a medium.
She’s soon confronted with evidence she can’t deny. Ghosts exist, and worse, so do demons. As if that weren’t enough, Asheville has a new resident demon that’s intent on killing her, and a sinfully handsome stranger who says she’s the only one who can destroy it.
Barely able to accept the complete reversal in her convictions, Piper must discover-and embrace—her true identity before it’s too late.

This was my very first DGS book way back when, and I still love it. A realistic romance that has stayed with me for years, I highly recommend!
I had so many cold chills reading this. It was amazing, so good and kept me on my toes.
Same world and timeframe as Curse Keepers however this is Ellie’s cousin Piper who is complete bad ass already. Nothing in this is predictable which makes it so much more entertaining. I can’t wait to see how much more she grows into more her role and destiny.
A whole new group of characters are introduced and I love them all. Love interests involved which always keeps you thinking.
I can’t wait until Ellie and Piper’s worlds connect to see what challenges and battles lay ahead for them.
I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next one. There was a different approach to being a medium and moving trapped souls on to the afterlife. I am still trying to figure out what role our mysterious man with the driver plays in this story of demons, but I have a few ideas…..
An entertaining easy read that makes you want to read the next one right away.
An interesting book. I always enjoy a good fantasy into the supernatural.
An interesting introduction to this series. Piper has a laid back take everything as it comes sort of attitude which is needed as she deals with ghosts and demons suddenly becoming a part of her everyday life. Some of the things she chooses to fight for and those that she doesn’t leave me slightly confused by her. This was an interesting story that kept me going to see where it takes her next.
Pretty good story. Piper is scamming people telling them she can talk to ghosts. Then, she starts to first hear, and then see the ghosts she’s been lying about. After that, things really start to hum along.
Very good story line. It was disappointing the second book was not available as a ebook.
OH wow! That is all I can say, I do not know why it took me SO LONG to read this series. I actually read this book on ONE rainy day during vacation. Piper Landcaster, is not what I thought she would be. She is a woman who follows her instincts and her instincts soon become full on communications with spirits. None of it is cheesy or silly. It is respectful, smart, and even her friends do not believe her at first. Every person in the book is there for a reason and each character is fantastic. I would suggest reading The Curse Keepers first as there is some reference to that series within this book. I am starting book 2 today!
Love her books. This is a great series
Not a stand alone book. Plot lines left hanging.
Of Ash and Spirit is the first book in the trilogy of the same name and this book is related to the Curse Keepers series. I loved the Curse Keepers so I figured that I would love this series as well. I really enjoyed reading it and being familiar with the history and lore that is presented in this book. I like Piper and her friends a lot and I cannot wait to learn more about them. I am hoping that Piper and Ellie (from the Curse Keepers) meet soon and I look forward to seeing their interactions. I like Jake and I am interested to find out more about him and if there is more to who he really is in this story. I am very curious about Abel and who he really is because he seems similar to Collin from the Curse Keepers series.
I felt that the writing was great and that Denise did a great job of bringing the story to life. It was easy for me to picture the location of the story as well as the characters and creatures in this book. For a first in a series, this book had great pacing and it was not too bogged down with unnecessary background information. I am looking forward to reading the next two books in this series and to finding out what happens with Piper Lancaster.
I always say I’m not too big into the Urban Fantasy genre, but after reading Of Ash and Spirit, along with Denise’s original Curse Keeper Series it makes me wonder what other books I’m missing out on. With the reappearance of the Lost Colony of Roanoke, belief in ghosts and spirits is at an all time high. This awakens the supernatural world and after “faking it” for her clients in the past, Piper realizes things have changed and she really can see ghosts. Denise Grover Swank takes you on a wild ride with Of Ash and Spirit. This book, along with all of her others was fabulous! I truly didn’t want to put it down, and am highly anticipating the future releases for this series. Please do yourself a favor and give it a try, if you like any of her other books this one will be no different!
i think i liked this book, but i can;t remember
i devour books, disregarding titles and authors for the nost part. s0me i remember and others i don;t renenber until i start to read ’em again
A spin off of the Curse Keepers…ghost books are not usually my thing but I had to start this series to see what else will come of Ellie, Collin, and David. Abel is very mysterious and I’m not quite sure how I feel about him yet. Ghosts exist and Piper is in the middle of it all. I cannot wait to see what else is in store for Piper in the next book of the series. I’m really enjoying this different than my norm series.
I love Piper. I’ll admit I was a little hesitant about starting her trilogy when I really wanted to just find out more about Ellie and her crew, but Piper is awesome. She’s feisty and funny and I love the irony behind her ghost whispering business that began as a fake. I also enjoyed Rhys and Hudson, her best friends, as well as Jack and Abel. I’m looking forward to seeing how Piper and Abel’s bond compares to the bond between Ellie and Collin from the original series. Also, I’m just dying to know what exactly Abel is. Denise did a great job of incorporating enough of the curse to tie in to the original series while giving lots of new information regarding Piper. Looking forward to Piper’s next book, where she’s going to meet Ellie!
After this book, I went and bought the others. Thank you for a fun, emotional (Jack) read.
Absolutely love this book and all DGS series! Fantastic author! I don’t normally read this genre but once I picked it up (because it was DGS) I was hooked! Have recommended, got a friend hooked and will recommend again and again!
I definitely will read more of the series.
Less errors than average. Piper is a realistic person as long as I suspend my disbelief in demons and such.
